The Fowler hammy/soreness thing is probably the reason this move was made. Maddon said Fowler wasn't in the lineup today because he still had soreness (didn't specify hammy) and that they were going to try to protect him with frequent rest. So the Cubs wanted another OF up here.
Little strange how little we are hearing about the Cubs. Obviously they've made a big move and it may be the only big move. Or maybe the Cubs are flying under the radar and/or waiting a little closer to Monday to go full throttle. I'm sure the FO would be fine with standing pat if it comes down to that but if Theo's history as a buyer is any indication (other than last year), he's probably exploring every possibility and option to make the team better.
But seriously, usually the answers to those questions are something like: "Obviously he's a little disappointed but he took it as well as can be expected given the circumstances" "not well" means he was pissed off.
Only thing I can think of is that he's been slumping quite a bit after the initial surge, but Joe knows as well as anyone that it is normal for pitchers to make adjustments which causes the hitter to slump until they make adjustments, and its the sort of thing you play through.
you can only hide a veteran on the DL for so long and LaStella has options. thats fine but the veteran has been terrible this year and with Fowler and Soler returning I don't see the need for a guy who is stuck at corner OF and has been awful this year. LaStella has an .846 OPS this year, has been hot lately and is worth close to a win this year in limited action. I mean maybe I shouldn't be outraged it probably won't affect the team very much either way.
Not sure where sweetpeteman is but its 3 hours until game time. Feel free to delete if this upsets the balance of Game Thread karma. This is the 2nd time the Mariners have visited Wrigley Field, and the first since a 3 game series in 2007, which the Cubs took 2 of 3. Some rain in the forecast so hopefully we get this in without too many delays
Can someone explain the reason Andrew Cashner is an in demand trade target? He had a couple of pretty damn good seasons in 2013 and 2014 but has been worth -1.2 wins (BR) since the start of 2015. This year he has a 4.76 ERA, an even higher FIP of 4.94 and has had issues staying healthy which has been something that's plagued him in the past. And for a cheap ass org like the Marlins, he doesn't even have much control as he's in his 2nd to last arb year. Maybe the Marlins see something they can fix in him or they are gambling that he will put it together or maybe the return to SD is not much.
