The main thing I don’t miss about chess tournaments is getting paired against kids. It’s 50/50 that you’re going to destroy them and feel bad or they’re going to destroy you and you just got walked by a 9 year old. P sure a 13 year old was getting help from his dad’s laptop on his “bathroom break” one time so horsefeathers that kid I was playing an 8 year old years ago, and I'm good enough that I would probably have heard of any 8 year old that could beat me in Denver, but I was wrong. After 15 moves it was looking grim for me. Down a few pawns and in a worse, holed up position. But then he blundered his rook. I felt so bad. He was just sitting there staring at the board and looking glum. Probably went on like that for 20 minutes when I realized I hadn't hit the clock yet. (I wasn't used to playing with a clock.) As soon as I hit the clock he resigned. I wasn't sure if I should feel bad or not, as he was just hoping to win on time, I suppose. Savy for an 8 year old. He's rated around 2300 last I checked (at age 17)
