  1. I am sure this has been discussed before, but Fred Merkle, playing for the Giants in 1908 and for the NL pennant, was on first while another runner was on third. A player hit a ball to right field and the runner on third scored. Merkle never touched second, was later tagged, was called out, and the run never scored even though the runner touched home before Merkle was tagged. The Cubs went on to beat the Giants the next day and win the World Series because it was too dark to finish. My question is this: if the runner scores at home, as long as he reaches home before an out is made at any other base other than first, the runner scores. So if a player hits a double with a runner on third and that runner scores, even though the hitter was trying to stretch his double into a triple, that run scores as long as he touches the base before the runner going to third is tagged out. Was the rule different then?
  2. First round picks like Olson shouldn't be sharing time. They should also be able to block. He is always going to have a quick guy on him because whenever he is in the game, you know he isn't there to block.
  3. Coming off of a Super Bowl appearance, Angelo obviously got a big head. He didn't go for fill-in guys who were safer picks, but went for splashy guys who you have to take an even bigger gamble on. I remember Boers and Bernstein last year saying that Angelo was on top of the football world during their pre-season interview with him. Angelo never sounds conceited, but his signings were fishy. The Bears window has unfortunately closed and with all of the money they spent this offseason, they might be cash-strapped for a few years unless the salary cap is removed after 08.
  4. According to Hub Arkush, 20/28 teams did not lower Williams' ranking on their board because of his pre-existing condition. Yes the Bears knew he had a herniated disc. He had it for 3-4 years and didn't miss any games. But according to the Bears' trainer, the injury to the disc was in a different spot in the disc that he previous injury was. Still, the herniated disc could have contributed to this new injury even though it was in a different spot. If Chris Williams is a solid LT for the second half of the year and for years to come, even if this was a bad call by Angelo for now, I won't be disappointed. From my perspective, the Bears weren't going to make the playoffs this year and now we know what kind of player St. Clair will be. This will also get them closer to getting a good QB next year in the draft. I hear rumblings that Hester might only be returning kick offs. They are doing that to get him more time as a WR and turn him into a #1 receiver, but if they take his punt returning away, I've had it with Lovie. How could they possibly do such a dumb thing? What does Lovie bring to the table as a coach besides the Cover-Two which I am not all that impressed with?
  5. How about another Billy...Billy Corgan. http://cache.idolator.com/assets/resources/2007/03/corgannnn.jpg Don't ever let Dalhausser spike. Man he puts it away about every time.
  6. On the radio today I heard that one member of the A's was a little ticked that as soon as Rich got into the 5th inning they would have to have a guy ready in the pen because he supposedly wasn't tough enough. Has anyone heard that Harden is soft? Or just injury prone? He didn't even want to admit that!
  7. They were talking about that on comcast a little while ago. Does he have any speed left? If not, then I don't see how he would help us. We've already got a cadre of slower possession type receivers. Getting Horn is akin to the Sox getting Griffey: get an old, slow player for an old, slow team. Why?
  8. fixed also look at Grossman's numbers when he came back after the ridiculous benching. That's because he toned his act down. Grossman's upside is that he can be a playmaker and a gambler. Once he learned that he can't do this (after the benching), he won't make as many mistakes, but he won't have the upside either. If that is all he will be, let Orton see if he can be better. The Bears aren't making the playoffs with either QB. We have seen Rex. Now let's see Kyle.
  9. Grossman regressed in 2007. It's not the same guy.
  10. No way. Every player on the Packer offense is better than the Bears counterpart with the exception of Kreutz. They have a solid defense too. The Packers will contend for the division and a Wild Card spot.
  11. Especially a guy who was benched last year and is unfamiliar with the Viking system
  12. How have CC's pitch counts been in years past?
  13. Jerry has specifically said on a number of occasions that Rex and Kyle were promised an open competition and that's all. No guarantees before camp that one would be the starter. Mike Mulligan (Sun-Times beat reporter) has been saying for weeks that the Bears have 9 million left. Maybe that was before Hester.
  14. Maddux needs two wins to beat Clemens. I can't wait for that.
  15. Why the hell he came back? He had no other offers. He wasn't getting a starting spot anywhere else. At least in Chicago he could try for one. There's not even a question? What game are you watching? No one is head and shoulders above the other. The Bears aren't going anywhere with Grossman. Might as well see what Kyle can do. Money talks more than playing for a good team does for a number of players. It's easy to fit Boldin under the cap. You give him a huge signing bonus which does not factor in the cap. Or St. Louis does. Then you trade him for Briggs who we gave a signing bonus to. The Bears have 9 million left under the cap. Boldin gets a few million on top of the bonus. Money is not the problem here.
  16. With Boldin' renewing his trade demand, I would love for Bears to make a move for him. All the good players the Bears could trade for were already given signing bonuses. Can you sign and trade in the NFL? I'd trade Briggs for Boldin and move Jamar Williams to Briggs' spot.
  17. We don't have a good option
  18. Orton has a lower TD to INT rate. He might be a game mananger, but he throws more INTs than Grossman.
  19. Manning might not play. He hasn't practiced yet and his knee might be worse than originally thought. But if Manning sits out, the Colts still win.
  20. Chip block by Olson. Quick screen to Forte. I don't know if Hester will perform a quick inside route for fear that he will get crushed up the middle.
  21. If Clark is hurt for any length of time, there are problems. I heard on the radio that Olson can't play on any pass blocking plays because he is a terrible blocker. It is going to be hard for him to see many passes thrown his way if when he is in the game you know he is only acting as a receiver.
  22. also in that link: good deal. Dusty just seems like the type of guy who can never stay on the field. Hasn't he had 4 completely different injuries in 2 years? Not good. You are right, but man that defense looked great in the first game last year vs. the Chargers with Brown and Dvoracek. But the offensive line in that game was about as good as last night's. Grossman almost got killed numerous times. I really can't blame his poor play on him last night or vs. the Chargers.
  23. No, why would it be? How can you represent another country if you don't live there? Because that country doesn't have professional services that will make them the money they are now making. So you are saying the NBA should field a team against a team from a league in Greece,Spain, etc? If I live in England for work does that change who I am? I am not talking about professional athletes. That I understand. Having a regular job working in England is one thing. Representing your country but being away from it for the last four years training in your competitor's country is another.
  24. No, why would it be? How can you represent another country if you don't live there?
  25. We should start calling them the offense since they do most of the scoring.
