  1. Porcello's sinker is going to be an awesome pitch as he finds his groove. Consistently 92-94 today and it had good movement all game. Still needs a second and third pitch, but the change up had its moments. He had a good curve in high school but looks like he throws more sliders. I'm expecting some more consistency this year and over the next three years where he develops into a 1b-high2 type once he finds a breaking ball. Btw this Yankee team is really, really good. That's the usual but I mean better than usual. That lineup is just deadly. I almost expect them to run away with it as much as any recent AL East team can run away with it. Kuroda threw really well yesterday with command of 4 pitches. Nova is still young but he does have an interesting arm as he gives up a 2 run shot. Still inconsistent, but I can see him being a solid 3-4 type in the long run, which is all they need from him anyway. Cole Hamels is nasty.
  2. Isn't 80% basically Carlos Beltran holy jinkees efficient?
  3. Who? He gets stealing at a 24% clip, which is borderline but not bad particularly since he's stealing 40+ bases a year. Fangraphs has him a positive base runner this whole time... Not sure what kind of contract he'll sign at all precisely because he's such a polarizing talent. People see low batting average and high K's and run from there, especially since he came up with tons of hype and had such a great 2007. Personally I've seen him a ton and looked over the numbers and I see a multi-skilled CF who can provide some pop, play defense, steal bases, and has some patience. Seeing as he's still young (27 this year) I can see him having some strong offensive seasons moving forward outside of that park. I call him the new Mike Cameron..just a quietly solid above average CF with the body type/athleticism/youth to do it for a long time. Do think the shoulder f'd him up enough that there's no shot he becomes a high end player anymore.
  4. I know no one really gives a crap about home/road splits for the most part but this is interesting...Upton's career road OPS is .022 higher than his home OPS, and last year he OPS'd well over .800 in the road while he was sub-.700 at home. Just figured this was interesting 1. because the Trop is a dump and sucks to hit in and 2. he's one of the players who's vocalized that. I don't really think he's a candidate to come here unless they traded Jackson to go out and pay for a new CF. OTOH I think the team who signs him will get a pleasant surprise offensively (not that he's a bad offensive player by any means).
  5. Yes, he looked like an elite talent in '07. Since then he's settled into being a 4 fWAR CF who can steal bases, hit for some pop, and play defense. Not sure how that's overrated, but maybe you just kinda remember him from '07, see he hasnt been quite as pretty since, and therefore must now overrated? Not to mention he plays in a pretty crappy run scoring environment. Also stealing bases at a 76% clip is within the range of fine. That plus he's signing as a CF, not a COF with whoever signs him.
  6. Upton's one of the best defensive CFers in baseball...He's actually pretty damn close to what we're hoping Jackson will be, especially when you consider where he hits for half a season. Edit: Big fan of this player...underrated with a well rounded skillset and I think there's room to go up offensively once he gets out of the Trop.
  7. isnt he still just 25 yrs old? he has put up good Ks in the minors and was a former 1st rd pick, he has to be worth more then shawn camp. Doesn't throw hard or have any kind of wow pitch...At one point there was some hope he'd be Jeff Suppan. Honestly seems like one of our non-Wood AAA rotation arms.
  8. What kind of arm are we talking about here for Cruz? I remember him being vaguely interesting. Also, any updates on the other, younger (? maybe) Baez? Upon a GOogle seems like he's an XST guy.
  9. Low upside and he's been around forever, but sure.
  10. Keep hitting big man. Still has the chance to be a RH bat with some power off the bench and a COF glove.
  11. Big questions on both Szczur and Ha...Ha might be able to put himself into the picture with a great year this year, but unless a guy is close and safe in some capacity they shouldn't affect FA. Definitely depends on cost though...I wonder if a 33 year old with starter potential on a championship squad would even be a fit or interested in making himself a fit.
  12. Is he typically this much of a groundball pitcher? This might be an extreme but he gets gronudballs IIRC with no stats in front of me. He's probably the most complete SP prospet in the whole system. That's a great thing for him and a bad thing for the system.
  13. Shelly Duncan is still in the big leagues so I could see LaHair finding work when the Cubs move on.
  14. Yep. He saw Vogelbach strike out twice on fastballs, so now he's telling everyone he was behind on velocity. He left the game before Vogelbach doubled and walked in his next two at-bats. He saw Baez homer, though, so he'll love him forever. I can't believe I'm doing this but he might have a point on Vogelbach. I don't see Vogelbach as someone who will hit for average in the long run unless some things work out (maxes and maintains major league level flexibility). Saw Vogelbach more as an OBP/SLG guy when he was drafted, and not the level of pure hitter Prince Fielder is/was. Really will have to wait at least until he reaches AA to really get a picture of what he might be, but the guy is paid to offer his opinion on players and it's seriously not such an outrageous opinion. He might also like Baez's explosive bat speed and athleticism...It's that combo that made Cano and Ramirez the stud hitters they are and/or were. Well that and very strong work ethics despite being you know...lazy foreign language brown people.
  15. This I can agree with...OTOH alot of good analysts and/or sports writers are like this...Pauline who covers the NFL draft can rub you the wrong way with the way he writes but the content is worth reading.
  16. I think he's one of the most interesting mainstream baseball writers out there, period. Mostly sounds like some fans are offended he's not saying what they want to hear about Rizzo. For all of Rizzo's hype since coming here, he's still a guy who hit .260 in AA before a callup to the PCL helped him out a bit. Personally, I like him, but there's plenty of room for questions and skepticism. OTOH, given the cynicism you see often from him I thought he'd be less ready to ball wash the Rays after the Garza trade, but he went the same direction everyone else did.
  17. What's with the call up Jackson stuff anyway? Its in one of those questions up there...Anyway, it's not like his numbers in AAA were great last year. I thought he needed at least 200 probably 300 PAs before a callup. Not sure you're even a .260 hitter when that's your batting average in the PCL to go with a very high K rate.
  18. Holy jinkees you wonder how those guys can even look themselves in the mirror.
  19. How can Appel be so hittable sometimes? I feel like he'll get drafted, some minor tweak will be made, and he'll take off. What a weird elite arm strength prospect...
  20. How did Cates look/do? I think Baez is late 2014 if all goes well and he actually becomes an elite bat prospect.
  21. Really think the Texans need a DT with the first two picks, preferably a NT. I see Jared Crick, Mike Martin, Billy Wynn, or even Akeim Hicks for them if they don't get DT in the first. They can play Reed and Barwin at OLB if there's more space for them to operate. I don't even like Reed and I think that's true.
  22. Awwwwwwwww WTF!!!! I just went for a run and they were playing! At least they're winning...and at least Shark's K's are still there while the walks aren't.
  23. Don't want to start a new thread, but hows about Nick Swisher as a RF option in 2013? Someone mentioned FA OFers the other day and I can't find the thread. Swisher is pretty much the same player he's always been, but that's a damn good player. The extra pluses are that he's gotten serious about his conditioning as his career has moved along and he's probably in the best shape of his life right now. Great guy in the clubhouse too to the point where the Super Serious Bidness Yankees love letting him talk to the press and play a major player part in the community relations and charity work. Plus his wife is almost in the vicinity of being as hot as David DeJesus' wife. Just bored throwing out the idea...I think he makes sense given that they'll probably look for patient bats who can play D and hit for some power (really? yah). Doubt he breaks the bank either on a 3 year deal.
  24. I agree on Garza and Shark but I'm a big believer in 3, preferably someone who would be the youngest of the three. Sucks there's still a delay because I was really looking forward to watching this start by Shark. It's [expletive] gorgeous here in the great state of NJ, y Chicago no gorgeous? It's beautiful here. It's [expletive] in [expletive] St Louis. Ah. [expletive] St. Louis.
