  1. With Arrieta pitching and no Abreu in the lineup, I kinda think that's the game.

    Castro

He is, but so is Russell right now. We have so many hitters struggling that switching the batting order around won't do much good; it would just involve a different struggling/bad hitter moving in front of another.

    Castro

Errors do matter some, and that stat is particularly lol-worthy. He might be better than Castro, but like Sofa said, it's probably negligible. Plus, Castro could be a kick-ass second baseman for all we know. the only thing lol-worthy is citing an 11 game sample size as evidence of anything I mentioned his 52 games in the Majors last year as well. Not huge samples, but we might need to back off on the "very good defender" stuff until he shows us he is one, that's all.
  4. Baseball players don't think like fans. We'd still be facing Sale today had we won Wednesday, too.

  6. Lester looks like he tops out at 75 mph after watching Sale.
  7. Same, though I have it muted. I can handle McCarver, Kruk, Keith Hernandez, etc., but Hawk and Stone I just can't do.

javy's defense is very good Is it? The metrics didn't like him in the Majors last year. He made 9 errors in 15 games at SS in AAA this season. That many errors isn't sustainable, but neither were Castro's problems earlier this season (and he's been much better on defense lately). I dunno, I've seen multiple people reference Javy's good defense, but we haven't really seen it yet, despite the tools. The numbers and the eye-test tell me that he's not in Russell's class, at second base, at least.
  9. Eh, I think he still has value. It's obviously not what it was this past offseason (and no, it didn't make sense to trade him then), but he's not immovable. His WAR totals over the last 3 years is a tad worrisome, true, but he did put up a .777 ops last year (and a ~3.5 WAR w/o that injury), and the shortstop numbers this year around the league are a total [expletive] show. He's only 25, and I think there are teams out there that would buy the "change of scenery" thing and take him if Theo really wanted to move him. Thing is, there's not much of a point to trading him unless we get a good player in return since the other options are Herrera and Alcantara (who has a .308 OBP and a ~27% K rate in AAA).

Edit - yeah, what Bob said. I found it funny that right before that play, Sutcliffe was defending him saying something like, "if it starts raining in Chicago, they'll even blame that on Starlin." Then RIGHT after that, he didn't run.
  11. Starlin Castro for Andrew Cashner...which team would say no?
  12. Yeah, I don't have any hope for the division, but losing games in that fashion just takes a little longer for me to get over. I wasn't more upset after this one than I was when we got Goldschmidted, for instance. Losing games when you have the lead while the opponent has 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th really sucks.
  13. Who do you consider to be the Cubs' best player? Arrieta is awesome and deserves to be included as well. To compare: Arrieta: 2.4 bWAR (5.3 in 2014), 2.9 fWAR (5.1 in 2014) Bryant: 3.0 bWAR, 3.6 fWAR Rizzo: 3.8 bWAR (5.2 in 2014), 3.3 fWAR (5.6 in 2014)
  14. Bryant's fWAR up to 3.6, and as Brock said, it leads the team. It was widely believed that Rizzo is our best player, but has rookie Kris Bryant overtaken him in people's minds? I think he's already our biggest "star" with the hype he had as a prospect and in the spring; also, fwiw, whenever we're on ESPN it's always advertised as "Kris Bryant and the Cubs vs..." I wasn't expecting him to be THIS good, especially with just a .203 ISO and only 12 dongs through 75 games. Oh, he's also passed Pederson (3.2) as well. Bryant actually has the fielding and baserunning edge over Joc, while JP has hit for a lot more power. Weird how that's turned out in the first half of the season.
  15. The Cubs should get Glanville to do color on radio. I like him.
  16. KEEP DEFENDING HIM Major props to T Wood tonight.
  17. Yeah, his worst call of the night was the called strike 3 on Russell. Otherwise, he's been pretty good.
  18. Where on earth was Coghlan? Castro had to run twice as far to catch that.
  19. I can't tell David and Sofa apart anymore.
  20. lol, Matheny frightened the young ump the first inning which probably led to that call on Russell. I think I dislike Matheny more than every one of their players. I'm not totally sure why.
  21. "Tightness" is the word I heard being thrown around. Not necessarily a pull or strain. If he goes into the 5th slot in the rotation after the break, we wouldn't need him until July 21, so he has time.
  22. Hopefully Kris goes deep a few times before the derby. Can't go into that with 12 measly dongs.
  23. We could be 21 over one month from now. Play the Braves, Reds, Phillies, Rockies, and Brewers after the All-Star break. Damn that's nice.
