  1. I think Vitters is a bad match for an organization that eschews walks.
  2. Here's what Sickels said pre-draft: Ranked as the top high school hitter in the class this year by Baseball America, Vitters is a product of Cypress High School in California, and has been a monster on the showcase circuit the last year. I like his size at 6-3, 195 pounds: not too small, but not so large that his strike zone gets unmanageable. He has plus power to all fields, and scouts expect he'll be able to hit for average as well. No one questions his bat; about the only doubt is if he's a 20 homer guy or a 30+ homer guy in the long run. His swing isn't long and he handles both breaking stuff and fastballs well according to scouts. Physically, his speed is just average. He has a strong arm but has to keep working on his defense at third base; it should be OK in the long run as long as his legs don't get thick. He could end up as a right fielder if hot corner defense becomes an issue. Trying to think of some comps here....Best Case : Chipper Jones without the steals early in his career.. Medium Case: Mike Cuddyer. Worst Case: hmm....someone who gets injured or tops out as a Triple-A slugger.
  3. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/anderga01.shtml I know he has a slightly better walk rate, but we have a guy like this on the current team in Soriano. Soriano had more power and speed, and came up playing a premier position. It's possible to do great things without a great walk rate, but what are Vitters' great things to make up for it? Soriano had a .180 ISO in the minors at the ages of 23 and 24. Vitters has a .160 ISO through the age of 21. The fact that he was playing 2B didn't help him when he was giving back any positional value by being terrible there.
  4. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/a/anderga01.shtml I know he has a slightly better walk rate, but we have a guy like this on the current team in Soriano. That was my second thought, but I figured I'd stay away from starting up that conversation. But...now that it's started, Soriano didn't stick in the majors til he was 25. Vitters is a little more than 3 years away from his 25th birthday.

  6. Love it.
  7. I'm not sure what you're suggesting. What can Purdue really do to discourage a player from playing? Obviously, it looks very convenient, but I can't understand what they could possibly do to convince him not to stay committed to Purdue. A guy on the team already, you can whisper in his ear about how much better he would be at football (IE: Bade). You tell him how little he'll play.
  8. If you agree that we should not be excited about the guy, then the rest is just semantics, and that middle ground you mention is really not all that meaningful. The reason to discount his age is because he has done very little to improve upon the weaknesses that folks identified at the time he was drafted. He still doesn't walk. He still can't run much or play defense. He still gets himself out swinging at pitcher's pitches. When and why are we expecting these flaws to get fixed, when there have been no real signs of progress in 3+ years? So how many players in our system would you consider "prospects?" You act like he's playing the same level of competition every year putting up the same numbers. He's put up mediocre numbers at a young age every stop along the way. He's not a top prospect, but being average at AA at the age of 21 isn't somebody you write off.
  9. Who said we should be excited about him? There's a middle ground between being excited about somebody and calling them a non-prospect.
  10. So why should I discount his age now?
  11. Well, it dropped his OPS a tiny bit
  12. A "baseball guy" (Hate this term soooo much) isn't going to keep Hendry unless he wants to.
  13. What does any of this have to do with da bum?
  14. He's been in AAA since mid-Aprilish. This is his debut with the major league squad.

  16. So which was it, young Prince? Did your father start or help start the rec league? Did he create other soccer leagues or high school programs? Or is it all unclear since his legend was told by word of mouth and no sound documentation exists? I have no idea what any of this means, but there's no way Levin lives past 40 anyway.
  17. Holy [expletive], how did I miss this?
  18. Those trades look terrible. I guess if the waiver wire for 3B is pathetic, you take A-Rod plus Carrasco?
  19. And so the NFL will be at fault when that relationship deteriorates. You'd think some pillow gifts would solve this. He's going to boycott all NFL-related merchandise (except for jerseys) until they start playing again.
  20. I don't know if that was sarcasm...but gut vs. instincts?? Really?
