  1. I don't see how you qualify a top 100ish type prospect as VERY useful. And your plan if we miss out on Fielder and Pujols is to just try and be as terrible as possible?
  2. There's nothing wrong with keeping Barney around as long as he's kept around as a utility IF, not a starting 2B
  3. I'D PLAY FOR FREE, HE SHOULD PLAY FOR THE MINIMUM, HE'S PLAYING A GAME FOR A LIVING!!!!!
  4. And Sosa's OPS is inflated due to his 2007 when he wouldn't have been under contract to us, while Fontenot's is deflated based on his numbers with the Giants. Plus the nonzero chance Crawford can become a 5th OF.
  5. Just came back from being out for 3 months with strained groin.
  6. Prior was only a bad choice because he turned him over to Bruce Kimm and Dusty Baker. That's double counting.
  7. Trading him or signing him? Both. And I hated the signing at the time.
  8. Jacque Jones probably belongs on a good moves list. Castro and Lee weren't drafted by the Cubs. Neither were Choi, Chirinos, Archer, or Nannini.
  9. I hope you're right and I would add in one of Dempster and Zambrano. Why would you want to trade Dempster? Who's going to pitch next season? Because we're not competing again til 2022 at the earliest.
  10. Bulls announcers said "Michael" for years And we know Red Kerr wasn't a homer.
  11. I hope they don't hire Sandberg because it would signal to me that the "change in direction" isn't a change in direction at all.
  12. I'll bet 100 million dollars he will not be the Astros GM in 2012 according to wikipedia he's from houston. that's the only reason they'd have any shot, i think. that being said, he's gotta be a hot commodity and if he wants to move on from tampa, one would think there are higher-profile positions that will be open. not to mention that the astros are a bad team with a moribund farm system. And their next owner isn't going to spend any money. While I agree with the sentiment (Friedman seems unlikely to head to Houston), ownership not spending money wouldn't be anything new to him. Separately, I can't think of too many "small market" type GMs who've had success transition to a big market, big money club. I'm not saying they don't exist, but only the disastrous ones (like Minaya) are coming to mind. The point is seemingly the only negative to Tampa is that they won't spend big money. So to remedy this, he's going to head to the biggest [expletive] organization in baseball that also won't spend money??
  13. It's going to take at least 10 years to revamp the organization? I could make an obvious joke... No, that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that, because the org will be going through a revamp, you'd like to have the guy who led that revamp be in charge for an extended period of time AFTER the revamp. Otherwise, the changes/attitudinal shifts/etc. could just fall by the wayside after the guy leaves. So you think Gillick will overhaul the entire organization, bring in his guys as GM, assistants, coaches, instructors, and players, and once he leaves they'll say, "boy we really pulled the wool over that old guy, now let's some grinders in here!"

  15. "best interests of baseball" = "best interest of owners" Selig is an employee of the owners, and the owners want salaries artificially kept down. The MLBPA isn't in the business of protecting its future members, only its current members, so worrying about draftees being delayed in signing is way down their list of items for negotiation.

  18. It's AAA.
  19. I had no idea his April was that comically bad.
  20. Do you think signing Dave Bush is distracting him too much to make trades as the deadline approaches, or do you think he thinks signing Dave Bush plugs a hole, and now he doesn't have to worry about the rotation going forward? Personally, I just think it was a waste of time in general. I highly doubt that he thinks that Bush plugs any kind of hole any more than Davis, Ortiz, or Lopez did, but on the other hand, if they are looking for another starter, they should just call up Coleman, Jackson, or Cabrera, who have been bad, but theres a chance that they could have some kind of future. If your a team on the brink of contention, it would make sense to keep trying out every retread you can get your hands on in hopes of finding lightning in a bottle, but as is, 12.5 games out of 1st and 19 under .500, I just dont get it. Or it prevents an arm from AA being forced into AAA duty before he's ready.
  21. Let's keep pretending that spending money on free agents = another Soriano contract. It's very productive. OH, and if we couple that iwth the concept that this team is doomed to 70 wins next year no matter who is signed/traded for that'd be just swell.

  23. Was this close to posting that yesterday, but got distracted. Another one of my life's many regrets.
