  1. But the perpetual rebuilding machine you have us on doesn't ever have us contending.
  2. Ricketts has already made a sizable profit on the Cubs from the absolutely silly amounts being spent on sports franchises since his purchase.
  3. find three guys who'll do that, is more of what i'm wanting if Baker/Marcum/Floyd want one-year deals to rebuild value, i'm all for it if Villanueva, McCarthy, Liriano want the security of a 3- or 4-year deal, i'd be happy to oblige (the assumption here is also that none of these guys will be commanding $10M AAV, but it's possible i'm low on a couple of these guys) I like Liriano, but I can't understand why you're happy to give him a 4 year deal but are limiting Baker/Marcum/Floyd to 1.
  4. Going by his offer sheet, I would hope not. Looks like Groce is gonna go after the big boys or fail trying. I am OK with this course of action. Tyler Griffey's/Bill Cole's are pretty much the exact type of player I don't want to see at Illinois anymore. On that note... Xavier Rathan-Mayes is apparently visiting UI this weekend... I believe Jackson is at Notre Dame this weekend, along with VJ Beachem for his official. ND was the early favorite for Jackson but Illinois seems to have the most recent momentum. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. I also heard, although not as recently, that Kansas was a real possibility as well. In the end, I would expect it to come down to UI or ND, making this weekend's visit pretty important. Illinois is a pretty heavy favorite at this point.
  5. Really wish I didn't have stuff to do at work tomorrow.
  6. Start time about midnight according to the radar... no mutual off days though so they'll have to wait it out They won't start a game at midnight. The Pirates are looking unlikely to make the playoffs, so the game will just be cancelled unless they're within half a game of the wild card, in which case they'll make it up on the day off before the playoffs.
  7. Stunned was probably the wrong word because I started out saying I'd be stunned if either got 1 year deals, then changed it to my estimation on the number of actual years. I figure McCarthy gets 3, Marcum gets 4-5. If McCarthy and Marcum really only get 2 year deals and we're not in on both of them, then I'm gonna be pretty [expletive] pissed.
  8. I'd be stunned if Marcum and McCarthy get less than a combined 7 years. ETA: But it's ok, because then everyone can rant about what terrible deals they are. Those deals, and every other free agent deal for more than 5M in the past 4 years.
  9. Can Old Style check in to let us know if this is a big deal or not?
  10. Soriano's reservations were about the shitty Bay Area summer weather.
  11. DUSTY BAKER CHOSE TO FACE MIKE LOWELL WITH A LEFTY RATHER THAN FACE LENNY HARRIS WITH A RIGHTY IN A TIED EXTRA INNINGS GAME IN THE PLAYOFFS
  12. I just pointed to the prettiest pictures. You had a Miller Lite That's crossing the line.
  13. I just pointed to the prettiest pictures.
  14. And to talk about the pacific NW. A lot.
  15. It's best that ND stay away from the football factories of the Big Ten that don't care about educating their athletes, and instead associate with FSU, Miami, and UNC.
  16. Why link to a post that a Big Ten alum can't read?
  17. It's what they'd have to to give to the ACC in return for joining in the other sports. And it helps fill a lot of spots should megaconferences start and there is a freeze out on ND from the Big Ten or Pac 12
  18. The Brewers are 16-5 in their past 21 games and are 5 games back for the second wild card. Then it's even more impressive that nobody cares about them.
  19. And then we're a 65 win team heading into 2014. A 65 win team with a better farm system, but we're still primed to suck for a 3rd consecutive year. I guess I still don't understand why 3 years of sucking is the magic number. And THEN you can start trying. So even if you trade half of the farm system you sucked so hard for before the 2014 season in order to make improvements then you're looking at what a 78 win team? So now you have a 78 win team heading into the 2015 season and a depleted farm system because we foolishly didn't suck to get a higher budget.
  20. They're all going to be scary, that's the point. The difference though, is we'll have the prospects to trade away by the time 2014 comes around. No, we don't know who will be available, but it'll be some guys who are good. It always is. I'd rather wait and dip heavy into FA when we ARE a contender and not beforehand, to where at least the first couple years of whatever exorbitant deals we eventually hand out, has a much better chance of being the best years of that deal. By signing FAs, the first couple years of prospects who we'd have traded away will be spent on our team rather than others.
  21. In what world are Shaun Marcum and a healthy Brandon McCarthy getting 1 year deals?
  22. And don't get me started on how scary the 2014 FA class is
  23. See my above post. If it's the difference between, say, the 2nd overall pick and the 5th overall pick, then I start to get cranky. But it's likely not. So enjoy some [expletive] wins. I am enjoying the wins and the better performances by guys. But there's only a 4 game difference in the L column between us at #2 and the Twins at #5 right now, as Kyle pointed out there's a pretty big difference historically between the overall #2 picks and overall #5 picks. We have 5 games left against the [expletive] Astros, so I'd say there's a decent chance we slide down a few spots if we keep playing like this given the competition and going all the way to #5 isn't all that unlikely. A 4 win difference over the average career of a player that is less than 50% to even become an MLB regular is not very much at all. Besides those extra 4 wins would just cost us draft budget anyway.
  24. Since everyone freaked out and he was said to have no margin for error, and a straight fastball, etc. Samardzija put up: 87.1 IP 95 Ks 22 BBs 11 HRs 2.58 ERA
