  1. I think Barney had a chance at 3rd if he took off after slowing down 15 feet shy of the bag.
  2. there should be a thread for dumb baseball opinions we held as kids i used to tell everyone that shawon dunston was just as good, if not better, than ozzie smith I had complete reverence for Leon Durham, and hated Mark Grace for years for taking Durham's job. You were a smart kid.
  3. He has 0.5 dWAR in 18 games.
  4. Whatever city is dumb enough to build a stadium for a baseball team.
  5. And then the Cubs network. Although I for one would be kind of shocked if pay TV is still going in its current form by that point. yeah, it's pretty apparent we're going to miss the boat on real tv money by a wide margin. we should probably turn our rooting interests to the idea that maybe the cubs' attendance and tv deal will be so pitiful that the next cba has provisions allowing us to get revenue sharing money. And some competitive balance picks for being in a small market
  6. How is assuring the correct outcome on the field "awful?" Have you ever watched an NFL game? Most challenges take 5 minutes and 75% of them confirm the call on the field, and they most definitely do not "assure" a correct outcome. Very few NFL challenges take 5 minutes. And if it means the correct call is on the field, whether it confirms or overturns the refs call, then as a football fan I'm ok with that. They have so few plays to review now in MLB and they've already fucked up a few.
  7. It's too bad Dale didn't pay his dues like Ryne did.
  8. Careful, Ryne BHogg is damn near a full grown man at this point.
  9. Jesus, that still seems like it's asking a lot to make the team "competitive"
  10. Other than Cano, who do you see getting bigger contracts?
  11. Interesting timeframe.
  12. Because teams are about to get that national TV deal, in general are more profitable, and there's less competition from other top FAs. It was a cruddy FA class last year and there were a bunch of teams with money to spend. There's still more money this year. Bourn was the 7th-highest FA contract of the season. Are there six guys in line to get a bigger payday than Ellsbury? Maybe. Or maybe none of them get a humungo payday. There was more than enough money last year to drown Bourn with cash. Just because there's more money now doesn't automatically mean someone like Ellsbury is going to get a contract twice as big. Ellsbury has a better offensive profile than Bourn and has clutchiness thrown in for the dumb guys
  13. It was just Brian Lee in a Theo costume
  14. And Rizzo's best case BA probably wasn't surpassed in his first full year in the majors. Nor was he 8 points shy in OBP.
  15. If we're so strapped for cash that Jacoby Ellsbury only being OK/really good for 2/3 of seasons, then we really shouldn't have signed Edwin Jackson.
  16. Nothing. But a chronic hamstring injury to Ellsbury could make a 6/100 type contract look really bad, really quick. This is getting silly.
  17. We're talking about it being inexcusable to not compete for a playoff spot until 2015, not what their record was last year. Did I read the McLeod quote wrong? He basically said tough [expletive], we won't be in the playoffs in 2015 either, not when we have to compete with the Pirates AND the Reds He didn't say 'no' to the question. He was just being respectful to the other teams in the division. He didn't say 'yes' to the question either. And why no respect for a Brewers team we're tied with right now?
  18. Oh come on. What does Ryan Howard have to do with anybody anyone has suggested going after this offseason?
  19. And I apologize that I'm semi re-hashing topics from the rest of today, but I haven't been around so screw you. What do those of you who find it acceptable to starting "competing for a playoff spot" in 2015 think is a good long-term estimate for the White Sox's playoff chances, because that farm system is worse than anything Thed took over, and they don't get inflated revenue due to being the Cubs. 2018?
  20. We're talking about it being inexcusable to not compete for a playoff spot until 2015, not what their record was last year. Did I read the McLeod quote wrong? 21. Oh, [expletive] you
  22. The only FAs worth having long-term are lefties.
  23. The Cubs could spend more, they choose not to. That isn't that issue. I don't believe that to be true or that the evidence points in that direction. They were in top 5 in net profit. Top 1. ETA: Although the Astros will almost certainly pass us this season thanks to their $8 payroll, and guaranteed money from revenue sharing.
