  1. i suppose i'm in the same boat as TT (above). if they're spending like $100-105m and continuing to pour money into the draft, international free agency, upgrading wrigley and other facilities, etc, i'm okay with that. but they aren't really "pouring" money into the draft and intl free agency. It may be more than most other teams are currently spending under the new system, but it isn't a huge amount that makes up for a middling payroll. Upgrading Wrigley is a completely different topic. Yeah, if you suck, you have a bigger allotment to spend. Basically everyone spends their entire draft budget. We differentiate by spending our overage as well, but the overage and penalty was around a mill total. IFA was different this year, as they added a mill to their pool and then still went 2.5ish over. So that's an extra 6 mill spent this year, but it's not something that can be done but every other year and that's if a draft doesn't screw that up. At any rate, they've spent an extra 7 mill this year but they shredded 13 mill in mid season trades. My hope is we sign a few pop up IFA's to balance those numbers completely out. And we're going to be one of the lower-spending teams in IFA next year because of the penalites from this year.
  2. Sounds more like a "Father" to me. I thought I nailed it with Papa. Nah goony's right, they shed their hillbilly roots, and have gone full-on WASP
  3. All of this. I really hate how much this seems to add up. What doesn't add up is why Theo Epstein would sign up for this [expletive] sandwich
  4. I think if we actually pursued Ellsbury/Choo we wouldn't sweat losing the 2nd rounder, but I don't like all the smoke surrounding the payroll issues. As far as losing the 2nd rounder (not to mention the 1M+ in draft budget that comes with it thanks to this [expletive] miserable CBA) for a bounce back candidate on a 1-2 year deal? Can't see it happening.
  5. -Due to Baez/Alcantara/Villanueva/Olt, I'd be surprised if we signed anyone beyond a 1 year deal on the IF. -Due to Parker/Strop/Russell/Lim/assorted rotation leftovers (Arrieta/Rusin/Villanueva/Grimm)/assorted Iowa bus guys, I'd be surprised if we signed anyone beyond a bullpen flier. -The rotation will likely have Samardzija, Wood, Jackson, and one of the 4 rotation guys mentioned above. -I expect Schierholtz and Lake to fill 2 spots in the OF. That leaves (other than bench roles) 1 OF and one SP. If, as Mooney and Epstein have both alluded to, we won't be able to secure the top of the line players, what does that leave as best case scenario? I fear anyone with a qualifying offer will be eliminated. Does Lincecum get the QO? How about Granderson? If both do what does that leave us with? Josh Johnson and Hunter Pence? Unless payroll is in fact dropping to the 80s, there's no excuse to enter 2014 without at least one of Tanaka, Ellsbury, or Choo.
  6. I mean, how many years is he given a pass because it sure would be fun to own a baseball team?
  7. i have a hard time getting upset with ricketts, though. hell, if i had a chance to buy a baseball team, i'd do whatever i could to make it happen. if the financing is a mess and ownership is going to have a hard time spending money due to massive debt, then the other owners/commissioner's office shouldn't have approved the sale in the first place. This is silly. Would you have a hard time being upset with Jeff Loria?
  8. would be a huge get for iowa Well, metaphorically speaking.
  9. Isn't he signed through 2014? He's got a bit over 4 years of service time, so I guess he is. Cots had nothing beside his name, which confused me. Yep, he should be under team control for 2 more seasons. I expect him back for ~850K or so with the chance to cut him if need be.
  10. Well I don't, but if that is the case they deserve to be criticized.

  12. Yes, one ownership group is good, one is a disgrace. I don't get why people can never separate criticisms of the Cubs organization from the front office. Why there always has to be this knee jerk, it's not the FOs fault!!! No [expletive], it doesn't make this less of a [expletive].
  13. Yeah, I saw it, didn't worry. After this second consecutive abomination, they aren't really in the position to strip the 8,000 (cautious estimate totally pulled from my ass) or so season tickets that were re-sold.
  14. Hooray for home opener Friday
  15. Hell, there are kids still in HS that are as old as the Cubs" top prospects. Really dumb kids apparently.
  16. Yeah, I made back a decent amount on Pearl Jam(though not nearly as much as I could've) and I'll still be coming in around 50-55% return on the bleachers. ETA: Though I'm not figuring the half dozen or so games I've gone to.
  17. I'd be pretty upset to see Rizzo become like Grace the person He hit on my 15-year-old sister when we asked for an autograph in a restaurant during ST about 20 years ago while my dad sat a few feet away. Fun times. Pics?
  18. Raisin isn't allowed to have happiness in football and basketball at the same time.
  19. :yahoo: Can you make us a 5 team trade involving the rooftop owners, Seattle Slew, the where's the beef lady, a pack of 1988 Score Baseball cards, and a bottle of Yoohoo? It'd make more sense than your response to this, Invite?
  20. I think between peripherals and history, Lincecum gets paid. Johnson's surface numbers will outweigh his K/BB numbers (and worries about his suddenly awful HR rate)and he'll wind up with a 1 yr deal

  22. The process is more fun this way
