  1. How is there no better option?
  2. I can't imagine any preseason being worse than preseason football.
  3. Geez, that was really [expletive] awkward Verne
  4. Well [expletive] me, when did Chase swing so wildly?
  5. Good gameday coach, but from the Wisconsin fans I know, he's a real miserable prick(and that's not sour grapes, they've been saying it for years) I don't see him making Arkansas a title contender, but they should settle in as an 8-9 win team under him.
  6. How bad is Purdue?
  7. Can someone discuss Andrew Cashner when he pitches in San Diego and when he pitches elsewhere? I'm not great at breaking down all the numbers, but it seems like his value is elevated even more based on where he plays. Numbers are obviously worse on the road, but NL West parks are pretty hitter friendly outside of Petco so it's not fair to consider that any sort of true talent level. HR rate is roughly the same home/away, but he's giving up ~twice as many doubles on the road, and must be nibbling a lot more because he's walking guys at twice the rate away vs home as well.
  8. That's Samson, stepson, actually, ex-stepson I believe, which is just...weird. He's on the outs now as well I believe. Hopefully this means Loria is descending into madness and will soon become a Howard Hughes type, only more dead.

  10. I mean unless Bogusevic caught a catchable ball for a 1-2-3 inning
  11. I don't think it's necessary to have a low or lowish payroll when building with youth. You just need flexibility, i.e. shorter term contracts for veterans. That way when talent from the minors shows that it's ready to come up, they're not blocked long term by a vet whose contract will be difficult to move. You can still maintain a $100 million payroll and build from within so long as you don't have too many long term high priced veterans on the books. Just because a guy is a veteran doesn't mean his contract will be difficult to move.
  12. This is the case for any player outside of pre-arbitration players. Higher value = more expensive...not sure what is needed to be discussed there. Also not sure why this would be an issue when they reach the majors, 3 years down the line yes but they are locked in for the first 3 years. 4-5 years down the line. 1st year arb guys don't make [expletive].
  13. I hope Molina steps on a landmine. ETA: And then is buried on one.
  14. Can we add him to the superfriends?
  15. Hoyer hired Ausmus as Special Assistant to Baseball Operations a year after coming on board as Padres GM
  16. agreed. yankees did the send-off perfectly (well, besides having him close out a world series game). i always admired the way he went about things - seemed like nobody ever had a bad word to say about him. even red sox fans, who hate everyone associated with the yankees, seemed to have a lot of respect for him. leaving out his rookie year, when he was mostly a starter, he had 11 seasons with an ERA under 2.00 and only 7 over 2.00. as a reliever, batters hit .207/.257/.284/.541 against him. pretty damn good. He should be a unanimous first-ballot HoFer, but some dick writer will keep him off just to be "that guy" So should lots of guys. I'm not going to shed a tear for a guy who pitches 70 innings a season getting 94% while guys like Jeff bagwell can't even get it for no apparent reason
  17. I misspoke on Grimm, I meant the 8 innings since coming over since he sucked in the majors with Texas. As I said on random Looking at the monthly splits, his improvement seems large fly spurred on by an absurd babip against. There's n denying he's improved, but I think to even pencil him in to the major league pen let alone as a quality piece if it would be a mistake
  18. God, I hope not. But yeah, it's possible. Arrieta could throw up a 3 WAR season by himself too though. Grimm and Rondon both look like they'll contribute nicely for the pen and Javy could just as easily give us 4 WAR in half a season than a 0. At any rate, if I were a bookie, I'd set the over/under at 5.5 for that group. I'd unfortunately take the under. I love Javy, but you think it's more likely he comes up and plays at an 8 WAR pace than him experiencing growing pains in his first tour? Justin Grimm's 8 major league innings has you penciling him in for a vital part in the pen? Rondon has good 2nd half #s, but it's all from September where opponents have a .067 BABIP against him. Arrieta's surface numbers look good, but again, he's got a crazy low hit rate, that is unsustainable. His peripherals haven't improved much since coming over, and aren't in the same universe as his peripherals good/standard bad year of '12. I'd take the under on 1 WAR for every guy on that list outside of Lake, Arrieta, and Baez, and I wouldn't bet the over on the last 2 (Baez is more to playing time)
  19. Hunter Pence's only regret is that he has bonitis.
  20. Before people get ahead of themselves, it's quite possible those guys outside of Lake contribute about 2 WAR total.
  21. He's been great financially for the game, horrible in all other regards
  22. Would you agree that bringing in none of the top 4 FAs is punting 2014?
