  1. Never paying market value for the best free agents shouldn't be one of them.
  2. Tanaka Well yeah, but what if we don't win the posting or if system changes, he just wants to play elsewhere? Ellsbury would be the most palatable of those choices to me, but I'd probably pass on all three at those levels of commitment. And if we lose out on Tanaka, we do what exactly? Have an 85M payroll and suck again?

  4. He was perfectly cromulent prior to that in a corner. I don't buy him as -double digits in a corner.
  5. Well, he has been playing CF this season. I'm comfortable with him being below average in RF.
  6. Don't forget Montanez being the 3rd overall pick putting up a 317/.411/.484 line in rookie ball ETA: Of course the main difference now is I have a lot more faith in our minor league staff than I did under Hendry
  7. Not as angry as Dodgers fans will be when they realize they didn't win the right way. ETA: This endless marginalizing the enormous advantage a high payroll gives a team is why people like me feel the need to continue complaining about our "healthy" payroll in each of the last 2 seasons there were 5 playoff teams ahead of the cubs in payroll and 5 behind. Would those 5 teams behind have gotten worse with extra money?
  8. And I'm really having trouble reconciling the concurrent points of: It's not the front office's fault, they are restricted by the budget. Once they get renovations/TV deals/McDonald's increases their prices they'll be able to spend and supplment the farm system (valid) and Look at all these teams that are in the playoffs with lower payrolls! You don't need money to win.

  10. Calling the 14th highest payroll while playing in a major market is letting Ricketts off easy. The payroll may be "healthy" relative to the rest of baseball, it is not where it should be. this is your problem. you're unable to get over this entitlement of where it "should be", when all that really matters to the team is where it actually is. we're right in the middle of the pack. that's healthy. i'm not going to spend 2 years crying that we no longer have this advntage that was gifted to us (as fans) in the first place. So you have no issue having a lower payroll than the Reds and White Sox. That's amazing to me.
  11. We shall see about that one. i don't buy the payroll dropping under 100 mil I think we already did.
  12. Calling the 14th highest payroll "healthy" while playing in a major market is letting Ricketts off easy. The payroll may be "healthy" relative to the rest of baseball, it is not where it should be. And we don't yet know that we have lots of money to spend this offseason. I've gotten a little more optimistic recently, but I think most agree around here that even the high end of our payroll for '14 will involve adding one piece.
  13. There is. It's called the criminal justice system. Those accused of crimes have either already had their day in court (Sandusky) or will soon (Schultz, Curley, Spanier). That's treating the symptom, not the disease. The culture at PSU (and other places) made it all possible and has to be changed. And the punishment is being reduced because the school is showing that they've changed the culture. I feel like EhDubya's stance is showing the culture hasn't changed.
  14. Gardenhire is a meatball who would excommunicated by Epstein by Spring Training game 3
  15. Well re-signing Aramis and signing Wilson wasn't even possible under Ricketts's payroll. Right. So what was the point of "sign Aramis and CJ Wilson and animal Sanchez might have come here" that you posted like 7 minutes ago? That the reason the team needed to be torn down had nothing to do with the way to rebuild a team and everything to do with Tom Ricketts being the 28th-29th best owner in baseball?
  16. Why we're not allowed to say holy [expletive] this sucks when Ricketts has forced the team to be terrible for years because of his cheapness is beyond me.
  17. Well re-signing Aramis and signing Wilson wasn't even possible under Ricketts's payroll.
  18. I believe last time we had this discussion it was things like well sign CJ Wilson and Aramis and maybe Anibel Sanchez doesn't refuse to sign with a [expletive] sandwich major league team. As Mojo stated though, we couldn't afford that because reasons. We sign CJ wilson (we all know he wasn't coming here) and re-sign Aramis and what money are we signing animal Sanchez with? Hand wave it away with "REASONS" all you want but this is the reality. Right, we get it. Tom Ricketts is terrible, what are you trying to convince me of?

  20. uhh, no one? When has anyone even debated that You just said: ...seemingly as if some people had been advocating the former. I guess I just took it the wrong way. Im saying that was the two options the front office faced. You can suck with your old, expensive, bad roster and lose 100 games and get nowhere or you can suck with a bunch of fill ins, trade the old guys for whatever you can get, lose 100 games but be making incremental progress. Those weren't the only options though, unless you think everyone is like Sanchez and didn't want to sign with a terrible team.
  21. #heroin
  22. Meaning 1 out of 11 "core pieces" were acquired through trading the cancerous vets and 1 out of 11 acquired from being really bad at the major league level.
