I'm willing to bet microsoft makes every effort to keep their employees from getting hurt at work. Seeing as pro athletes are much larger investments to their teams, they should be managed accordingly. When you are paying someone millions of dollars of guaranteed money for several years, you decide how to best use their services to win games. Hendry did and he clearly made a big mistake. Wood's opinion is irrelevant. Cub doctors said he couldn't get hurt any further. Also, the opinion of the highest paid player on the team shouldn't be irrelevant.

am pretty sure wood based his decision on doctors saying he couldn't injure himself any further. ballplayers need medical specialists to make informed decisions. You truly believe that ballplayers should decide even with informed decisions upon when they should be shut down? You CAN'T be serious. depends on the situation. they're grown men, who get paid more than their managers and gm's. if the cubs are 20 out of the wildcard in early august, of course management intervenes and shuts him down, but they weren't.

Wood must be a lunatic. Q: Do you wish you would have had that surgery sooner than August 31? A: No, no. That’s looking back and nobody asked me that question when I was doing it. Everybody wants to ask me that question now that we’re a month into the season. If I bail out in August or early August of last year, then I get ridiculed for giving up on the team. I made the right decision. We went as long as we could with it and I did what I could to help the team.

Wow, you have some pretty good inside knowledge there. Bradley plus another prospect (Antonio Perez) were traded for a player from the Texas League (Ethier). I have a hard time believe the Cubs couldn't top or equal that. FYI, Andre Ethier is drawing comparisons to our own Felix Pie, from John Sickels The Cubs could equal that. It doesn't matter ONE IOTA whether Wood wanted to be shutdown. He's as much of a competitor as anyone out there. That's why Hendry is the GM. He has to make those decisions. No player is going to want to be shutdown, it's up to management to make the tough decisions. good luck resigning a guy when you give up so easily.

Cedeno would plan 2B, just like the Cubs were planning to do when they sign Furcal. So you're suggesting that Nomar should have replaced Walker and his 1.5 million then. Good luck defending that. Nomar was insurance. If he's healthy, we have a deeper bench. If he's hurt, you have Walker and Cedeno for depth. Nomar was offering to come back at a discount price and he felt he owed it to the fans of Chicago to play a full season. He said he was even open to a position change. If he was so unwilling to play a different position, why is it exactly that he hasn't logged a single inning at SS for the Dodgers this year? Nomar signed with the Dodgers AFTER Furcal and while Izturis was still on the roster. That makes Nomar at least 3rd on the depth chart at SS. So, you really can't sit there and say that Nomar wasn't willing to do it when I saw the quote that said he was willing to play different positions. Nomar is a better player than Jacque Jones. Nomar would have been a 1 year signing. Nomar provided protection to the offense in case they couldn't get a Tejada or a Furcal or any other player Hendry targeted. You can play the high and mighty "you are correct and everyone else is wrong" game if you want, but no one here is going to fall for it. I can respect that someone may not have wanted Nomar back because of past injuries, but to say Nomar wouldn't come back because he wouldn't have changed positions or that the Cubs shouldn't have brought him back because we had Walker and Cedeno is ridiculous. Because this team sells low and buys high, we have the pathetic offense they have right now. Nomar was a perfect example. They let him walk in a sell low move. They had every opportunity to buy low in that situation and blew it. Sure, Nomar spent time on the DL already this year, but so has Jacque Jones. Oh, and Jacque Jones has a 3 year deal. i don't care how big of a piece of crap Bonds is. it's not funny to hit a guy in the head regardless of whether the roids have given his head an extra layer of cover. as for kerry, with the way Marshall and Maddux are pitching, this rotation could be real good.

i guess it doesn't matter that wood didn't want to be shutdown. shutting him down when there's still a decent chance of making the wildcard sends one helluva message. who wants to play for a quitter organization?
