  1. For once, I'd like to see us go get a pitcher who has great stuff AND has actually put it together. It's that second part that's so difficult for the Cubs to understand. Z & Prior?? Last guy like that who I can remember being available in free agency is Bartolo Colon. Pedro Martinez in last year's free agent pile. Yup. Pedro got overpaid though.
  2. Another question ~ who do the Yankees overpay and what scraps are left?? Will there be a Yankee vs. Baltimore vs. Boston war for Burnett?? For Penny?? Since Weaver absolutely bombed in NY can't see him going back there.

  4. For once, I'd like to see us go get a pitcher who has great stuff AND has actually put it together. It's that second part that's so difficult for the Cubs to understand. How many pitchers are ever available that have both the stuff and have put it all together? Oh yeah, we can get AJB this offseason... How much you think he'll get offered though?? My guess is that a team like Baltimore offers him something absurd.
  5. Get a 3rd team in there who takes Kerry Wood, and throws NY and the Cubs something, and maybe they bite. I can't see NY getting fired up about acquiring Hill, Williams, Mitre or any of the other young Cub pitchers.
  6. Looks like all 3 are free agents, and the Cubs need to add a starting pitcher. Since Burnett could be priced out of the Cubs price range, perhaps the Cubs can get one of these guys??? Just let Williams & Hill fight for the 5th spot, and deal off Wood before he goes on the DL again. Either that or make him the closer. Penny's numbers are - 3.50 ERA, 1.27 Whip and he's 27. He's had some injury problems though. Weaver's numbers are - 4.34 ERA, 1.21 Whip and he's 28. Washburn's numbers are - 3.15 ERA, 1.38 Whip and he turns 31 in 2 days. Yes, yes I know that all 3 benefit from playing in pitcher's parks, and Washburn has a real good defense around him. I'd pass on Washburn, but Weaver and Penny look good for about $5-6 million a year. Weaver kinda reminds me of Clement. Great stuff, but never has really put it all together yet. The LA media has pounded him some, so he could be looking to go elsewhere. Of the 3, Weaver would be my choice.
  7. Giles will sign for more than 2 and 12, and Dunn will not be traded to the Chicago. Time to move on. Guys who the Cubs could possibly get are Manny, Griffey and Soriano. Long shot - ARod. No shot - Dunn.
  8. I can't see the Cubs having any pitchers NY can use. I think Wood and Maddux could waive their no-trade clauses for a few clubs, but I don't think either will want to get killed by the NY press. Perhaps NY would take Lee and Patterson for ARod??
  9. Have him ready to relieve Williams on Sunday. Give him 2-3 innings and see how he holds up.
  10. Are you listening, Jim Hendry? This man knows what he's talking about. I'm torn on Giles - he's definitely past his prime and it would just feel too much like picking up one of those guys who ends his career playing below average baseball, but if you can sign him to a short term contract that isn't too excessive I guess I'd do it. I would have no problem with Burnett, but I honestly believe since it's such a thin free agent market and there are so many teams with money who will be looking to bolster their pitching that we'd end up severely overpaying for him - I just have to believe some team out there will "sign him at all costs" and make him rich and I don't know that I want that to be the Cubs. Bingo about Burnett. Too much demand. Too little supply. Only way he becomes affordable is if SF doesn't pick up Schmidt's option and St. Louis doesn't pick up Mulder's option. Suks that St. L signed Carpenter to an extension.
  11. Why would NY trade the best offensive player in the game?
  12. I'm not going to name names. My definition of pan out means being pretty good. Here's my 10 player list ~ Pie & Harvey. Maybe Dopriak. Just going by what the Cubs usually produce. Which is not much.
  13. you're right. hill really put a damper on the cubs postseason hopes today. they were riding a hell of a winning streak until this afternoon. plus, rusch has been AWESOME lately! So let him get drilled again?? You think that's good for his confidence? You're right though. I did sell his first 2 starts short. That plate of crow must not be going down well. wow, what a dick. so what is this about? do you think you're some kind of baseball whiz because you predicted occasional problems for a 25 year old who started the season in single A? wow, any more bold predictions for us, nostradamus? for all you people in the 'told you so' business, why don't you make a prediction yourself once in a while instead of just sitting back and waiting for people to be 'wrong' so you can give them a sly little wink about how you were soooooooooooo right, but how it's ok because not everyone can be as smart as you. let's hear a list of ten prospects that you think are going to pan out, and then i'll get back to you four starts into their major league career. take your time...i'll wait. Omg. Settle down kid. Your first post in this thread today was a little hostile. If you're going to dish it out, be ready to take it as well. I'll leave it at that and disregard what you just wrote. you don't have to disregard it. and don't call me 'kid'. and i can 'take it' just fine. i'm just sitting here patiently waiting for your list of prospects. judging by the fact that you've made 7 posts in the minor league forum i'm sure you know quite a bit about prospects, and i'm sure you knew darn well that hill would suck in his first shot at the bigs since i'll bet you've been following him for years. The Cubs don't have 10 prospects who will pan out.

  15. you're right. that kind of stuff is totally unnecessary. That was in response to your initial snide remark. I was raising a legit point.
  16. i wouldn't be too upset if they sent him down. but at this point, you might as well see if he has what it takes to compete for a spot in the rotation next year. sending him down to insert rusch into the rotation is pretty pointless. If they were facing San Fran, I'd like to see Hill get another start so he could try to get on his feet. However, it's @ Houston. Yes the Cubs are pretty much done, but it's a big series anyway, and it's the leadoff game of the series. Also, Hill might be trying to break a 12 game losing streak.
  17. What's up w/ the sarcasm?? Is there a rule about being skeptical of Cub prospects?? Good players from the Cubs system tend to be few and far between.
  18.

  20. Thankfully he'll miss St. Louis, who would probably drill him for 7 runs too. His next turn is Houston. They're not a good hitting club overall, but it's at Minute Maid. Hill's confidence has to be hovering around zero right now. Is it wise to send him down to Iowa or to get him some work in the pen, and start either Mitre or Rusch?? We still have Mitre right? :)
  21. This is just another Adam Dunn obsession thread. Hopefully this obsession for someone the Cubs will never get doesn't get as bad as the Beltran obsession.
  22. Let's be precise here. Hill and Williams are not ML starters: they are collateral damage because there are no arms left to throw at this fiasco called the '05 Cubs. There isn't a Cub fan around who isn't seeing red, but personally, I hope the team gets their collective butts handed to them this weekend. If we're going to crash, let's do it in "old-style" (double meaning intended) Cub fashion. That's about the only way I see Dusty getting booted out of here during the offseason, much less before this season ends. Rusch was doing fine as a starter. He had a 3.32 ERA. They need to send Hill down asap before he loses all confidence. He's getting killed. At least Williams can go 5 innings, and leave the game w/ a little dignity.
  23. IF he said that, that's just posturing. Cincy wanted 4-5 prospects and 400 acres of prime Chicago land for Dunn. The Cubs won't get Dunn in a trade and won't get him in free agency.
  24. Am bumping this again. Get ticked. Whatever. I don't care. Sorry but Hill's not ready for prime time. At least get someone in there who will keep the game close.
  25. How is Giles defense nowadays?? He's still pretty solid right. I don't think bringing back Nomar and Walker's a good idea. Walker's d is subpar, and Nomar's made a few bobbles since returning. He doesn't seem to have near the range anymore, and I doubt he'll get it back. My best guess is that he'd join Kerry Wood on the DL by May of 2006. The Cubs shouldn't allot $17-20 million of payroll to those two. As for Maddux, pay a third to half his salary and move him for prospects. Should put either Hill or Williams in his spot. Use the savings elsewhere. As for Burnett, my guess is that Baltimore or some other pitching starved team gives him a ridiculous deal. See Troy Percival, Armando Benetiz and Magglio Ordonez for more.
