  1. Personally, I never considered Bonds to be a great average hitter (do some people?). A .298 average isn't hugely impressive for an all time great. Among those considered to be all time greats (going with nicknames for the hell of it): Really? Batting Average? all he said was bonds doesn't have a great batting average compared to the all time greats. i don't think he was saying that it was a great stat, though. it's not a great stat, so why use it? show me how Bonds ranks in OPS or SLG wins for a pitcher aren't a great stat, but it's interesting to see who has the most of them all-time and how certain pitchers rank.

  3. Well, any fan with half a brain would assume Hendry is very interested in Sabathia and is looking into it. I don't think this news really changes anything.
  4. that ted williams stuff is fascinating. wasn't he basically seen as the a-rod of his day too? does great during the regular season and when it doesn't matter, but when he made it to the playoffs, he performed horribly. i remember hearing how a lot of people, when they think of the all-time greats, really held that fact against ted.
  5. that 0.75 k/9 ratio must have scared the crap out of hitters.
  6. The loss last night doesn't worry me in the least. The best team in baseball is still going to lose 50+ games. At least we didn't lay down and die.
  7. we had a lot of baserunners, and scored a decent amount of runs. sherrill's an effective closer and made 2 of our worst hitters look bad, and he was a tough matchup for fukudome. the cubs will be fine.
  8. or their players are actually good. no no, you're right, it's magic and pixie dust Please explain Tony Womack's 2004 season. Go ahead, try not to use pixie dust. statistical chance? womack wasn't amazing in 2004 or anything. he got lucky on balls in play. he still couldn't hit for power and didn't draw many walks. are the cards lucky because they got an okay tony womack in 2004?
  9. from what i've heard, jack brickhouse was pretty terrible. kasper honoring him was cool, but i'm sure i don't want him doing that every time.
  10. i was surprised to hear that only arod, pujols, and maybe 1 other person has more rbi than aramis since 2003.
  11. the cubs are 5-4 against the al. so they're not kicking our butt.
  12. can we still masturbate or is that out too?
  13. i'm about 100% sure it's fake. but it's pretty cool nonetheless. http://youtube.com/watch?v=4SqJz0NgnnE
  14. I'm not sure that's such a good comparison. Not that it is the end all/be all of stats, but Williams' WARP3 is 106.3, Alou's is 80.7. anti-cub bias, obviously.
  15. Why not? He's a CF'er with a career line of .297 / .381 / .477 and 125 (OPS+). Plus he played very good defense at a difficult position and put up a career postseason line of .275 / .371 / .480 in 465 AB's . Had he not played in the Steroids Era and thus been buried behind the Bonds, McGwires, Boones, et al., you'd be whistling a different tune. oh i hate to sound like colin cowherd...but it's the hall of fame, not the hall of very good. i wouldn't lose sleep if he was inducted, but i dunno, he doesn't seem all that spectacular to me. when moises alou retires, do you think he should be in the hall of fame?
  16. woo hoo i'm on record as being 100% behind this signing. (i checked because i legitimately didn't remember)
  17. i never realized bernie williams was that good in his prime. but he shouldn't be in the hall of fame.
  18. What's more damning, in my opinion, is that the Reds organization hasn't come back and stuck up for Dunn. I'm amazed that no one from that front office hasn't come back and rebutted those statements. Even if those statements were true, you'd think they'd want to protect his reputation so they can get more for him in a trade, which they should be open to if the above is true. Or have they come out and released a statement and I missed it?
  19. too late to trade marmol for greene?
  20. didn't adam dunn turn down a scholarship to play quarterback at texas to play for the reds? doesn't sound like someone who has no passion for the game.
  21. hey now, rick's 1992 was pretty darn good too
  22. I hear you. There was absolutely no reason to make this move unless something else is going on. You know other teams have scouts that can go to Iowa to check out Murton if their team is interested in him, right?
  23. Who's the best one-hit wonder of all-time? Someone who had 1 great season, then for whatever reason, never came close to that one season. Off the top of my head: Brady Anderson
  24. Baseball is baseball. Having a competent hitter hit in place of the pitcher doesn't really detract from the game. And AL baseball is just as fun to watch as NL baseball.
