What's really funny is that in the same article he gets on Cedeno for that grounder up the middle where he arguably should have had an out.

I'd go with Pie and it's not even close. I don't expect a great season from him or anything, but I think he'll be just as productive as Pierre (and I disagree with premis in the original post that Pierre is better at getting on base). Make sure you have someone else on the roster (preferably RH) who can play center to spell Pie or take over adequately if Pie really bombs for some reason. I'm not against offering Pierre arbitration, only because I don't think he'd accept. Upgrade at 2B or SS (my personal preference at this point is Soriano or Loretta) and the offense can afford to have Pie hitting in the 7th spot. Of course, this also frees up additional money to use in free agency. And for God sakes, please don't have Pie leadoff.

And he's right that the SLG needs to improve, but the SLG was not a problem in 2004 and 2005 while the Cubs were still poor offensively. He of all people should be able to see that.

He hates when his pitchers gives up walks. Same with Hendry. That makes this all the more confusing/maddening/idiotic. That's the first thing that jumped out to me as well. Dusty sees his pitchers give up tons of runs because of walks, but doesn't make the correlation to his own team's offense. I just don't see how it can be laid out in front of him any better. 1. Power wasn't a problem in 2004 and 2005 and they still couldn't score (in fact, I think Dusty complained that the only way they scored was via the homerun). 2. The Cubs pitchers give up walk after walk only to constantly watch it come back to haunt them. I really can't even comprehend how anyone with any kind of intelligence can't put these things together and realize this team needs to improve its OBP.

I'll prefes this by saying that this scenario assumes that Baker is not the Manager. Start Murton in LF next year. Cedeno would be my choice at SS, but with Izturis there I basically choose between Cedeno and Theriot for a utility player next year. Theriot can play 3B, which might give him a slight advantage. I wouldn't be against keeping Pagan as a 4th or 5th OFer but I'd like to see him concentrate on playing CF in the offseason. I'm wondering if a bench like this might work out: Catcher Cedeno Theriot Restovich (platoon w/ Jones) Pagan LH Power Bat? If nothing else, it's cheap :? That is assuming that the Cubs would actually go with 11 pitchers next season instead of 12. If they have 12 pitchers, one of Cedeno or Theriot is left out. It's also banking a lot on finding a LH "power" bat for the bench who can also play 1B. I don't really have any ideas in that department off the top of my head (Conine? Klesko? Yuck on both). The other option of course is to bring Nevin back, but I'm assuming he can find more playing time elsewhere and I'm not willing to pay him what he'll likely be seeking.

Basically implying that a player made a mistake so bad that his 7 year old kid knows better. Is that showing respect to a player as a manager? Is that treating a player like a man? Supposedly thats Dusty's forte....unless of course your a rookie whom he doesn't like(in this case Theriot) Dusty gets bashed for being a players manager and Dusty get bashed for calling out his players. It's a lose, lose situation for him...It's obvious he needs to get outta town after this year is up. Dusty gets bashed for only calling out certain players publicly, while defending others to no end. I agree with Tim here. Dusty has made up the lamest excuses to defend terrible play by guys like Alou, Neifi, Macias, Lenny Harris, Jones, Alf, Estes, etc. but will publicly denounce play from guys like Patterson, Choi, Hill, Murton, Cedeno, Theriot, any of the "rookie" pitchers, etc. It certainly appears that he has "pets".

This is true. This is probably not true. Hendry is probably going to try and keep Izturis around as long as possible. You may be right about that. I hope not. Maybe Hendry will be gone by then.

But he did have those months. In seven seasons, Pierre has had TWO seasons in which he posted a better than 370 OBP. He's not likely to do that again. This year his OBP is 330. It was 326 last season. His career OBP is 351. A few hot months does not erase his entire career. If you want a lead-off hitter with a better than 350 OBP, you shouldn't look to Pierre. He's not likely to best that mark. There really isnt anybody else out there. Who would you suggest? Matt Murton. Bat Giles second if it's that big of a deal.

I don't remember it that way, at all. Yeah, that isn't anywhere close to the truth. Yeah, I'd say the majority of this board was against that trade.

I think something else to consider is that relegating Cedeno to utility infielder next year does not necessarily constitute giving up on him. If the Cubs upgrade at 2B, Cedeno can go to the bench in 2007, but take over the full time SS gig in 2008 when Izturis is gone. I'm sure he could get plenty of playing time in 2007 filling in at both SS and 2B. He's still young and one year of part-time duty doesn't mean he can no longer be considered a possibility as an everyday middle-infielder at some point. I would rather move Izturis and pencil Ronny in at SS in 2007 (with an upgrade at 2B), but I just don't think that's something Hendry is going to consider. You really can't have Cedeno and Izturis in the same lineup unless you make a MAJOR upgrade in the OF.

I'm not sure if I really have a problem with Dusty saying it was a bad play (it was). My biggest question is, would he have said the same thing if Pierre had been thrown out doing the same thing? Would have said the same thing if it was someone like Jones? I'm not sure he would and that is what bothers me.

Mike Williams; he's close to being cut by the Lions. I think Cadillac went after the Bears took Benson, but I could be remembering wrong. Edit: Yes, Cadillac went right after Benson.

I'd like to see Hendry sign Soriano (2B) and Schmidt (maybe another SP if they have the money). Cedeno becomes a utility player. Call up Pie. Murton LF Soriano 2B (or Barrett) Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Barrett C Jones/Restovich RF Pie CF Izturis SS Zambrano Prior Schmidt Marshall/Hill/Marmol/Guzman/FA pitcher to fill out rotation As little faith as I have in Hendry, I do think this is a possible scenario simply because of the affection that Hendry has reportedly had for Soriano in the past. It is very likely however that he will be overpaid and the Cubs won't get involved. I'm really not as high on Carlos Lee as most people.

As of right now, my preferred option (based on what I think is possible based on budget/player availability) would be to let Pierre walk, put Pie in CF, and sign Soriano at 2B. I don't really care what batting order you use, maybe hit Barrett 2nd? Murton Barrett Lee Soriano Ramirez Jones/Platoon Pie Izturis That only requires one major position-player FA signing (Soriano) and hopefully gives the Cubs enough money to upgrade the SP. Some managers may feel inclined to let Soriano lead-off, in which case Murton could bat 2nd and Barret could slide in behind Ramirez.

Guzman really should be the one getting those starts. I don't know if it really matters though, I guess. Six in one, half dozen in the other. This is why the Cubs absolutely have to sign/trade for two veteran starting pitchers in the offseason. Just getting Jason Schmidt or Barry Zito won't be enough, imo. I dunno. Zambrano/Schmito/Marshall/Marmol/Prior with Guzman and Hill as backups/trade bait looks decent enough for me. Maybe, but if Prior isn't healthy, you basically have this year's rotation with Schmidt replacing Maddux. Marshall/Marmol/Guzman/Hill will likely all be improved, but is it enough?

Marmol and Guzman are not one in the same. Marmol is relatively new to pitching and needs to build up innings before anything can be expected of him. Guzman needs to pitch in the majors so the Cubs can find out what he has to offer. That's what I was getting at, but honestly, at this point I just want to see them both starting somewhere.
