  1. Ideally, I'd like to see Lugo at SS, Soriano at 2B and Pie in CF. Soriano 2B Lugo SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Barrett C Jones/Platoon RF Murton LF Pie CF If Soriano isn't insistant on leading off, I'd probably go: Lugo SS Murton LF Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Soriano 2B Barrett C Jones/Platoon RF Pie CF I don't suspect that's going to happen because I'm guessing Hendry is much higher on Izturis than I am. In my hypothetical, he gets moved for pitching. This is probably one of the more economical ways to upgrade the offense IMO because Lugo's salary won't be that much more than Izturis' and Pie will be cheap.
  2. While Pie's Iowa numbers don't jump out at you, he showed a great ability to adjust as the season went on, just as he did at the lower levels. I see no reason to think he won't be able to do that at the big league level. As others have stated, the Cubs would need to upgrade the offense in other spots (RF, 2B, SS), but if they did, I'd be happy with Pie (and his minimum salary) in CF. If he's relatively productive, you've got minimal dollars going to your starting LF and CF and can allocate that money elsewhere.
  3. I will never understand people. The kid has started what, 13 or 14 games? The majority of those games he has played well, with a few outstanding games sprinkled in (namely the beginning of this season). Give the guy a chance. How anyone could advocate Orton over Grossman is simply astonishing to me.
  4. I hope he means what he said here What I'm taking from that is that he'll try to put his team in the best position to succeed, based on the numbers. That's all I ask (well, that and to take care of the SP).
  5. But nobody is getting Schmidt for a one year deal with an option. He'll get at least three year, IMO. If you're only willing to offer one year, don't waste everybody's time. Exactly. Will Carroll would only sign Schmidt if it was a 1 year deal with an option for the second. Time to switch focus to Barry Zito!!!! I think I'd have to disagree with Carroll on this one. I'd be willing to go three years on Schmidt. That's not to say I wouldn't pursue Zito though. I'm just saying, I wouldn't limit my offer to one year plus an option for Schmidt.

  7. Honesty, is Willis that much better then Hill at this point? Hill is unproven, which lowers his value a little, but I'm not sure Willis is actually better then him. ETA: something I often forget is tha Willis is only 24 years old. That's also something to consider (Hill is 26).
  8. Well, he claims he never said that. Well, he was also completely shocked by speculation he'd be a manager during the ALCS. Really? It seemed pretty clear everybody in the booth knew he had a job waiting for him. Maybe I have it confused with the report that he was going to be the new Yankee manager, but my point was that he dismissed comments about him managing while he was broadcasting when it was well known he was in the hunt for a job. This could very likely be the same situation given his history with A-Rod and A-Rod's perception in NY. The way I remember it was he was asked about the Yankee speculation which he adamantly denied stating that it wasn't fair to Torre to speculate and yada, yada, yada. Thom then asked him if he could be managing again next season and he basically said yes (I don't think any team names where thrown around).
  9. I'm not sure the Yankees will require a top notch 3B in return for Arod. Offense isn't their problem and there are plenty of "lesser" options to be had at 3B. They want starting pitching, which of course leads back to the Zambrano, Hill and Prior discussions. That, or you get another team involved (Marlins). Cashman would be nuts to use Prior or Hill as the cornerstone for this deal. And yeah i think the only way for this to go down is for a 3rd party to get involved. Then the Cubs could use some of their prospects and guys like hill/marshall in this deal. I dont have much optimism in Hendry pulling off a 3 team deal. I don't either, and I don't have much optimism that Arod is in the cards regardless, but we'll see. I think they may value Hill higher then you're saying. Something along the lines of Hill, Eyre and Guzman may interest them. They can plug Hill in to the rotation immediately and possibly Guzman at some later date. They shore up their bullpen a little and free up a ton of cash to throw at Zito, Schmidt and/or Matsusaka. I'm not advocating such a deal for the Cubs, but I think it's something that would interest the Yankees.

  11. I get the feeling that the only way the Cubs get him is if Ramirez leaves, which means 3B it is. Because NY won't deal ARod without a good 3B coming back, or because Hendry won't resign Ramirez? Because Hendry wouldn't resign Ramirez and trade for Rodriguez. Plus, I think he's still giddy about getting Izturis for SS. He could always move Izturis to 2B (not that he should).
  12. Short answer: No way. I'd give up a great deal for Arod, but not Zambrano.
  13. I get the feeling that the only way the Cubs get him is if Ramirez leaves, which means 3B it is. That is what I was thinking at first, but I'm not sure. I'm wondering if Piniella would try to convince Hendry that Arod can go back to SS. Also, if the reports are true that Hendry views Soriano as an option in CF (huge if), perhaps he's opening up his mind a little. I don't really believe that, but I guess it's possible.
  14. You really think the Yankees would trade Arod for a downgrade at 3B and one reliever? I'd do it and I think the Rangers would, but I don't know if the Yankees would.
  15. Will someone please explain to me why people still think of Soriano as a leadoff hitter? Will someone please explain to me why Hendry is going after Carlos Lee? That's what I'd like to know as well. I'm not too concerned with where Soriano would hit in the lineup, but am encouraged that they view him as an option in CF. No thanks to Lee.
  16. You're talking about probably a $55 million jump in payroll. Yikes.
  17. You have been around long enough to know that it will never happen. If he wins they will say that Lou had nothing to do with it, if he loses it will be all his fault. Well, forgetting for a moment that what you just said is absolutely absurd, I'd say there are a few things he can do to win me over: -Take care of the pitchers (especially SP). Don't over tax them. Give them extra days off every once in a while. Take them out of blowout games with their pitch count low, etc. -Construct reasonable lineups on a regular basis. Please don't bat Izturis second. Platoon Jones. -Don't give away outs on a regular basis (sacrificing when it's not necessary, which is most of the time). -Don't become obsessed with playing vets who are of little to no value to the team on a regular basis over younger players with much more potential. If he did the majority of those things, I'd be happy with him.
  18. i have a feeling there is going to be a lot of peolpe proven wrong next season by Dempster when excels again with regular work. He is a converted starter who rusted away last season after a good first run as a closer and doing well as a reliver. Wuertz Eyre Howry Wood Dempster crazy good. The more I think about it, the less interested I am in bringing back Wood IF it's to work exclusively out of the bullpen. If the Cubs feel he can be a starter again at some point, fine. I'm just not interested in pumping even more money into an already over-priced pen. If one of Dempster/Howry are traded, then I might do it. I'm really not buying into the "let's make Wood a dominant closer" thing. The Cubs already have three "in-house" candiates for that job in Dempster, Howry and Wuertz. I'm really against spending more money on this pen.
  19. He's not a lead-off hitter, but I'd agree to put him there if it helped the Cubs sign him. I just want to acquire the best hitters available. I'm not that overly concerned about what order they hit in.
  20. I'm definitely a big Hill fan, but the Yankees aren't doing this deal without getting someone they can plug into the top half of their rotation. I'm not willing to trade Zambrano, but I think anyone who wants to get Arod is going to have to be willing to give up Hill. The Yankees might be high on Prior, but I'd think they've been burned enough with pitching injuries to stay away from him. Having said that, maybe they take Prior (or a "prospect") if you take Pavano back in the deal. That allows the Yankees to throw a truckload of money at their SP (again), while also taking a chance at sliding Prior into the rotation.

  22. He apparantly tried to use Kazmir on short rest to win one last game to get to the meaningless goal of 70 wins one year. That's a sign of a manager with misplaced priorities. That ain't good. It may not be quite as bad as I'd thought/remembered (aside from the Kazmir thing goony mentioned). Pitcher Abuse Points (from BP): 1999 Freddy Garcia 9th Jamier Moyer 17th Jeff Fassero 34th John Halama 79th Gil Meche ? (not in top 100) 2000 Aaron Sele 64th John Halama (not in top 100) Paul Abbott 97th Freddy Garcia 105th Gil Meche (not in top 100) 2001 Garcia 18th Moyer 108th Sele 76th Abbott 27th Halama (not in top 100) Piniero (not in top 100) 2002 Garcia 18th Moyer 60th Piniero 49th Baldwin (not in top 100) Halama (not in top 100) Some noticables from the Tampa year: 2003 V. Zambrano 16th G. Gonzalez 18th 2004 V. Zambrano 4th 2005 Casey Fossum 11th Kazmir 32nd There are a few that stand out, but overall it's not in the catagory I had thought as far as Pitcher Abuse Points goes.
  23. I hate you....why did you write that last paragraph? God, that is so true. I was about to say the same thing. Oh God...
  24. Some of his decisions in Tampa Bay may be clouding my judgement, but it's hard to act like they didn't happen. Also, his pitcher usage has me worried. I'd say that is probably my biggest concern when seeking to hire a manager.
