Guzman really should be the one getting those starts. I don't know if it really matters though, I guess. Six in one, half dozen in the other. This is why the Cubs absolutely have to sign/trade for two veteran starting pitchers in the offseason. Just getting Jason Schmidt or Barry Zito won't be enough, imo. Unfortunately, they probably won't have the money to acquire two SPs and still upgrade the offense as much as they should.
6, 7, 8 of Pagan, Mabry, Cedeno. Marquis must be terrified. The beauty of if of course is that you now have Pagan, Mabry, Cedeno, Pitcher, Pierre and Izturis in succession. Hopefully Izturis' glove will have a few RBIs today.
I'm just not drinking the Cubs brass' kool-aid on Cedeno. I think a majority of the hype came from the failed Furcal acquisition, so hey, we have a great Cedeno already so who cares if we failed again at an impact FA signing. i'm not drinking the cubs brass' kool-aid that izturis is this amazing defender who's so great if off sets his horrible offensive production. It doesn't take any kind of kool-aid to see that Cedeno has more upside then Izturis for a fraction of the cost. I really don't see how Izturis' better defense (if that's even the case) offsets that.
Another problem with putting Izturis in the lineup is that he can't really be "hidden" in the 8-hole. That would work if you didn't already have two other 8-hole hitters in the lineup, which the Cubs do (Pierre and Cedeno). If they are back next year, having Izturis in the lineup only adds to the problem. They need to upgrade offensively at atleast one of those positions, probably two. Instead, they regressed by adding Izturis to the lineup while removing Walker. And it's been beaten to death, but you can't just shrug off $4 million just because the Cubs have it. Neifi + Rusch + Izturis = $10 million of next year's payroll.
3/$15m right fielder 3 good prospects + $5.75m + potentially many more millions of dollars $2.8m Do you seriously need this explained to you? What he said. The biggest beef with Jones and Pierre (for many people) is the amount paid and/or given up for them. You could have Patterson in CF giving you the same prediction (over the course of the season, so far) as Pierre and save money and still have the three pitchers given up in the Pierre trade.
Baker may not be the biggest problem the Cubs have, but he's certainly one of them (and a major one at that). Bringing him back would be completely idiotic (and not surprising). Also, I love how people get all over Ramirez, Prior, Wood, etc. for not being there when the Cubs "needed them most". However, once Baker (in the eyes of some) starts getting guys to play well while the team is 20 games under, he deserves another shot!?!?
I'll take a guess: Pierre CF (he will never sit) Izturis SS Nevin 1B (v. the lefty) Jones RF (see Pierre) Murton LF (see Nevin) Neifi 3B Blanco C Theriot 2B Yikes.
