  1. whats wrong with keeping pierre? with his resurgence he can be a .750 (he's already at .727 even with his horrible first few months) ops guy next year. he plays great defense (aside from the noodle arm) and will have 50 steals this year. i dont see any way that they dont try to resign him. i believe the cubs have already said that they see pie as a #5 or 6 hitter anyway rather than a leadoff guy (i think it was oneri?). i think he will be switched to rf in iowa next year. if he takes off in 07 in aaa, they can always trade jones & bring pie up. What about Pierre's past/present makes you think he can put up a .750 OPS over a full season in 2007? He's done it exactly once in the last four years (2004). Over that same time span, he's been under .700 OPS twice (2002 and 2005). perhaps having a .727 even with a horrendous start? Who's to say he won't have a stretch like that again next year? He wasn't close to productive in 2005, and would have to remain hot over this next month to reach your .750 number. If he doesn't, that would put him at .750 once in five years. I see no reason to think he can continue his current hot streak over the length of a whole season at this point. He's not getting any younger. It's possible, but your acting like he's a .750 OPS guy. I would say he isn't. He'd actually have to improve, at age 30, to get there. his career ops is .730 & the way he has come on so strong the past few months indicates to me that a .750 next year is not unreasonable. players do improve at age 30 btw-not every player fits into the production curve. Like I said, it's possible, but I don't think it's likely at all. He hasn't shown the ability to maintain a .750 over his career and a hot streak at age 29 is not going to make me forget the entire 2005 and first half of 2006. Of course not every player fits the production curve (I never said that, btw) but it's certainly something that needs to be kept in mind, IMO.

  3. Except for Kenny Lofton. And Mark Grudzelaniek. And the 04 version of CPatt. And Mark Bellhorn (2002).

  5. Bump vs this It's slightly different because there was one out instead of two, but I think the double standard is pretty clear.
  6. So Restovich and Fontanent are on the Cubbie poopie list? Seriously, it's almost bordering on criminal that Restovich and Fontanent can't get a look at the ML level at this point.
  7. I'm not sure Hendry realizes, but Murton and Pie don't play the same position. Might want to make a note of that. I don't think there is any question the the Cubs are going to re-sign Pierre (or at least attempt to). :pukel:
  8. Giants Winn Visquel Hillenbrand Alooooooooooooooou Durham Linden Feliz Greene Lowry Cubs Pierre Theriot Ramirez Lee Barrett Jones Murton Cedeno Hill Jones in front of Murton against the LHP? mmmkay...
  9. Someone else mentioned Durham a month or so ago and I laughed until I checked out his stats. It's very impressive! My biggest beef with Sullivan's plan isn't the Durham acquisition. The rotation he suggests is terrible. Also, replacing Ramirez with Lowell is a big mistake, IMO (not to mention that Lowell likely has no interest in being a stopgap). Lastly, I'm not interested in Sheffield unless his price tag is much smaller than I expect it to be.
  10. Welcome! I think you have some faulty logic here. You're comparison to the White Sox (2005) is not accurate to me. They still had a lot of SLG and absolutely outstanding pitching. That was enough to overcome their weak OBP. The Cubs don't have that. The Cardinalls (2004) comparison also doesn't hold much water to me because the rest of that lineup was stacked. It was more then enough to make up for any problems with Renteria's poor OBP. The 2003 Cubs had absolutely dominant pitching in the second half of the season. That is what got them to the playoffs, along with the Astros choking. IMO, Pierre will be vastly overpaid for what he provides (speed, and that's about it). Agreed. I would certainly agree with you that the starting rotation is certainly one of, and arguably the biggest problem area for the team as a whole. Having said that, I'm not really convinced that the rotation can be upgraded enough to compensate for the very poor offense the Cubs currently posses It's possible that team could compete, but I think you are banking on things that are not highly probable. Lee likely won't approach his 2005 numbers next year. Barrett is having a career year which he may never match again. I think you're still one injury away from looking at a very mediocre to poor offense again.
  11. Yikes. I just read that and came here to post it as well. I disagree with most of what Sullivan said. 1. I think letting Ramirez walk if he opts-out is a huge mistake. The guy started off slow this year. He's still better (and younger) than Lowell or anyone else the Cubs are going to find off the scrap heap. 2. I don't see a reason to push Pierre into re-signing now (or ever). I might offer him arbitration, but that's it. I'm not that high on Matthews Jr. either, but wouldn't be against that move for the right price. If I don't see a viable CFer available that fits my needs, I'd call up Pie and upgrade elsewhere. 3. On Wood; I'd offer him a small (incentive-based) contract. I don't see the obsession with making Wood "make a decision now". 4. Mussina is 38 years old. We don't really need another Maddux-esque signing at this point. I think his contract demands will exceed what he can provide at this point. The rotation that Sullivan suggests isn't very impressive at all. 5. IMO, putting Dempster into the rotation is a HORRIBLE idea. I would not consider it. 6. I'm not high on Sheffield at this point. His age is catching up with him health-wise. I think there are better alternatives via trade or signing Soriano to play 2B. If he wants to stay in LF, Hendry should at least consider moving Jock to CF (I know that won't happen though). Murton moves to RF in that scenario. Catalanotto would also be high on my wish list if I were Hendry.
  12. Hendry stated again yesterday that Dusty will finish the season. What I'm really wondering is, if the Cubs continue their present slide and go, say 5-24 or something the rest of the way, does MacPhail start revisiting his decision to extend Hendry? If it gets bad enough could he change his mind on Jim and let him go? I would say no way, but it sure would get interesting. Look at it this way, Hendry had $95 million to put a team together and it ends up with less than 60 wins (if the above scenario played out). That would be pretty hard to justify.
  13. Oh Jesus. Here we go. No, I've never watched a freakin' baseball game in my life. You got me. Damn. I only thought baseball was just a bunch of funny numbers on a computer. All this time, I should have been watching games and seeing that counting on a rookie is crazy and never works. OH WAIT. I WATCH BASEBALL ALL THE FREAKING TIME!!!! GIVE ME A FREAKING BREAK!!! Adding a 2B will not improve this team????? What. Improving at a position will not improve the overall ability of the team??????????? That doesn't even make sense. Just because you disagree with adding Schmidt doesn't make it a dumb idea. It's not like the guy has a history of missing lots of time with injuries. He's been very effective. He's very good. Trading away one good bullpen makes the bullpen go from a strength to a weakness? Not in my book. Forget it. This isn't even worth my time arguing with you. You already know for a fact what's going to happen next year.
  14. If that is the 07 Cubs, then we have NO chance in hell. Im going to vomit if I look at that again. I have to disagree. I think TT's team is certainly capable of making a run in a weak NL. It's a significant upgrade offensively IF Jones is put into a proper platoon and they add a decent hitting 2B to the top of the order. Loretta? Offensively, that team sucks. Pitching wins games people. Just by looking at that rotation, I know for a fact they will not compete. hahahahaha...You know for a FACT?!?!?! Awesome. Thanks.

  16. I didn't think that was the point of this thread. I thought it was to lay out what you would like to see happen.
  17. Ideally, (which I understand won't happen) I'd sign Soriano (to play 2B) and Schmidt. Maybe add one more SP if the money is there. Bring up Pie to play CF. C: Barrett 1B: Lee 2B: Soriano 3B: Ramirez SS: Izturis LF: Murton CF: Pie RF: Jones/Platoon Partner
  18. I found it commical that the very thing Dusty undervalues the most, walks, ended up losing the game for them in the end.
  19. Word. No, that's two words. :Dokay, smarty :club:
  20. Word. Upgrade at 2B and/or a corner outfield spot and play Pie in CF.
  21. I honestly see no reason why Restovich shouldn't platoon with Jones in RF next year, assuming both are back with the club. In fact, there really is not good reason why that wasn't done this year. Restovich wasn't even on the 40-man last time I checked.
  22. Seven wins sounds reasonable to me. Having said that, the Cubs would still be terrible with an extra 10 wins, so who cares.
  23. soapy

It should also be mentioned that Griese is playing against 2nd team defenses in most cases. I think he's looked fine, but you have to put things in perspective. Bottom line, even if Griese does end up being the guy, the Bears lose nothing by giving Grossman a shot right now, IMO. They need to find out what he is capable of.
  24. Link Isn't Theriot a "true" shortstop? Hasn't he logged sufficient minor league innings at the position? Doesn't he play it pretty well? hahahahahaha....awesome. it looks like dusty is polishing off the "we need to maintain the integrity of the pennant race" stuff from last year. better get Bynum out there.
