  1. If they're willing to use Hoffpauir in the OF, then they have six OF's including Gathright (when Bradley is healthy). I would think that Reed and Fukudome are more than adequate defensively in CF/RF late in games if they insist on pulling Bradley. They can also throw Miles in the OF in an emergency. I really think Gathright is worthless at this point.
  2. Do they? How many times has he been used as such? I haven't really noticed it happening but perhaps I've missed it.
  3. My only "worry" (I don't even think I'd call it that) is Gathright. I just don't understand his purpose at this point. If he's not a defensive replacement late in games (I'm not necessarily saying he should be), then what is his purpose on the team? If Reed is the prefered option in CF late in games, then Gathright has no reason to even be on the roster. I realize I'm pretty much preaching to the choir and it's not a big deal at this point, but that's pretty much all I can come up with to be worried about (which I guess is a good thing).
  4. Interesting, Ping. My first thought was that in 2009 he's been pitching to the conditions. First in the game @ HOU because he was staked to a big lead (i.e. with the big lead, focus on throwing strikes). Second was the home opener against COL when the ball wouldn't be expected to carry. Having said that, the data showing that he started this last September puts that conclusion into question. He put up spectacular overall numbers last September (4-0, 1.93 ERA, .146 BAA and 23K/4BB) including that gem against HOU in MIL.
  5. i never say "we/us" and i hate it when others do. you're not on the team, or associated with its operations in any way. i guess i don't really mind people saying we if it's their school team, but i still don't do it.
  6. but it doesn't feel like 3.77, whatever that's supposed to mean.
  7. Bumping to reinforce this. It absolutely needs to stop. It's getting ridiculous.
  8. For comparisons sake, Marmol had an ERA+ of 167 last year with a 0.927 WHIP. Rivera has gone 200 and 1.019 over 15 seasons. Presumably the most reveared closer in Cubs recent history, Lee Smith, put up a 133 ERA+ and a 1.255 WHIP with the Cubs. ETA: don't know what I was thinking leaving out Marmol's 2007 numbers. He had a 326 ERA+ and a 1.096 WHIP in 2007.
  9. What if Marmol ends up becoming a lock-down closer and stays with the Cubs throughout his career?
  10. Yeah, if he can keep up this gap power, that would really help his productivity. I've been pleasantly surprised.
  11. i don't see how someone clocking in at 205 driving after one beer is taking anyone's life into one's hands. that's insane. i thought he clearly said when if/when he drinks anymore than that he doesn't drive. There's no place for reason in this thread. You're a bad person. Honestly if you think after one beer I'm significantly impaired and taking other's lives into my own hands, there are clearly no actual facts that will alter your opinion. I wasn't trying to be self-serving, I was going out of my way to explain myself. I consider myself pretty well-informed on the topic because of the work I've done with NADS (yes I have worked with NADS) and was trying to bring reason into the argument based on factual research. You don't want to hear it. You and goony think anyone who drives after 1 beer will also use the "I'm fine, I can handle it" argument with more. That's not true in my case whether you believe it or not, which really doesn't matter. i'm confused. you're quoting my post and saying "you and goony", but i was pretty much defending you.
  12. As long as you are cool with it, I guess we can agree. LOL. I love it when people completely ignore a long post and pick out one line like that without substance. Then again I guess I would be argumentative and bitter if I were a journalist today and living in North Dakota. There was no substance to pick out. It was a long, self-serving trail of BS that more or less argued that you get to decide which people's lives to take into your hands and which you don't. (neither argumentative nor bitter. Quite happy. Maybe judgmental, but that's one of the side-effects of being right). I don't for a minute trust your judgment on your own driving ability or your own level of impairment. And I look forward to the day you get caught. i don't see how someone clocking in at 205 driving after one beer is taking anyone's life into one's hands. that's insane. i thought he clearly said when if/when he drinks anymore than that he doesn't drive.
  13. I would have loved to have seen Jerry's reaction to Benson crying when he was drafted. I was not happy about that one. It wasn't a "oh I'm so happy to have this dream fulfilled cry", it was a confused, pissed off cry. oh, man. i remember watching that and just saying, "oh...no...." over and over again. that was horrible.
  14. not exactly sure how i feel about this decision. on one hand, i like the idea of giving a young guy a chance if you really think he's going to be better than the veteran. it doesn't happen enough, imo. on the other hand, it's hard for me to feel confident about a guy who has never pitched above high A (and didn't exaclty dominate there). the bullpen transaction options are now extremely limited. i think there's a pretty decent chance Patton will end up going back anyway at some point and Gaudin has been dropped for nothing. hope i'm wrong. good luck, David.
  15. well, there's nothing wrong with be cautious with your optimism. i'm not as bothered by the situation in Denver because his rep coming out of college was the complete opposite of that. really the only thing i'm worried about as far as Cutler goes is an injury, but that would go for any good QB.
  16. still a questionable OL, crappy receivers, and an aging defense. Bingo. Some people are acting like Cutler is Flutie, Montana, Young, McMahon, Manning and Brady all rolled into one. It's just hard for me to get excited over Cutler since the Bears have had like 30 QBs since I started watching as a little kid in the 70's. Plus I'm not excited about Pace either. He was great 8 to 10 years ago, but now he's getting pretty old in a position that has a very short shelf life. i think you need to remember that Cutler is only 25 years old. the only other QB's to throw over 4,000 yards each of the last two seasons are P. Manning, Brees and Warner. he's signed for at least three years and the Bears have time to fill those other holes while he's still in his prime. Forte is only 23. Olsen is 24. Hester is 26. the Bears actually have some really nice young talent on offense.
  17. i wish Chocolate Milk was still around.
  18. Wayyyy too many miles on him. yeah, i think i'm a lot more hesitant than many here. the guy isn't as washed up as Harrison, but he's getting up there.
  19. Pretty huge gamble to give up that much, but I'm excited.
  20. or he could hit 15 with a .300 obp and unacceptably bad defense. in fairness, though, this is probably the sort of thing cincinnati should be doing. sheffield might not be the right guy, but they're in the sort of spot where having a few guys to roll the dice on in the hopes that they hit on something and pick up 5 wins could be pretty huge. if done right, sure. the roto blurb got it right fearing this will push Dickerson/Gomes to the bench instead of Taveras. that's where the Dusty effect is felt. also, you can't count on Dusty to use Sheffield effectively. if he does struggle and seems to have lost it, you know Dusty will keep running him out there. basically, if the Reds had a decent manager I'd think this was a decent risk. but i have to believe Dusty is going to screw it up.
  21. Well, I've tried to use words like "might, possible, etc" because of that very thing. If I had to bet I'd say they don't sign Pace. But my theory is if they do all of a sudden sign him with the intention of playing LT, that it would indicate they are souring on Williams. Okay. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something. I agree it would certainly indicate (to me) that they are souring on Williams.
  22. Is it possible we're jumping the gun on the Williams to RT thing? The two blurbs posted sounded like this scenario was somewhat writer speclation more than something coming from the Bears, unless I missed something.
  23. I'd really be completely shocked if Angelo made a strong push for Cutler. Man do I hope I'm wrong though...
