  1. so what should people assume then? that he's a gym rat or a guy who never works out? or because we don't know for a fact, should it not even be talked about in your opinion? i'm simply saying we don't know and anyone who wants to claim he's lazy or that he's a gym rat is more than likely just pulling stuff out of his/her rear to justify their already formed opinions about him. people used to say all of this same stuff about Wood. than people got a glimpse of what he was going through (training wise) and he stayed healthy for a year so now he's not a lazy, theiving, pansy anymore.

    Pie

Overall, (right now) Gathright is a better hitter and baserunner right now and it isn't worth finding out whether or not a below average player (Pie) can improve to become slightly better than another below avg. player (Gathright). i hope you're right. fwiw, i don't really expect Pie to become any more than what Gathright is at this point. i just didn't really see the need to spend the money on Gathright when you have Pie under control (at less cost) unless there is/was a trade in the works involving Pie.
  3. i'm always a big fan of people thinking they know a player's desire, work ethic, motivation, etc. maybe i just missed Prior's blog entry divulging his work-out schedule and inner most feelings.

    Pie

He probably does, Gathright will hit for a better avg., Pie would hit for more power, Gathright is a much better baserunner, Pie is better defensively while both are above avg. defensively. Pie didn't do enough last year to merit being on the 25 man roster and with those flaws I mentioned, I don't see him ever becoming an everyday CF'er. The Cubs aren't in a position to try and develop an inferior player on the 25 man roster (even a 25th man) when they are trying to win it all and potential upgrades are avail. at minimal cost. even if the bold is true (i don't necessarily think it is), i still think they're essentially putting a player equivalent to Pie into that 25th spot, for more money. i guess your opinion is that Gathright offers more because of his BA and baserunning. i just don't see it. any upgrade is extremely minimal and (IMO) neutralized once age and potential are considered.

    Pie

erroneous the question at this point is simply one of Pie v. Gathright. that's it. nobody is arguing Pie is or ever will be a Carl Crawford. nobody.

    Pie

They probably feel that Gathright can hit well enough to maintain that role as the 25th man/pinch-runner/defensive replacement where Pie has not shown that ability to do so. He does have things going against him: Long swing, poor strike zone knowledge, inability to work the count, unable to hit the breaking ball, and he finds himself in way too many 2 strike counts to have those things going against him. What you say is true, but do you really think Gathright offers much (or any) more than Pie as a 25th man? They seem to be almost the same player, no? I guess I really don't see what Gathright can do that Pie can't, besides make a little more contact. 2007 was the only time he did anything. Once you consider age, I really have a hard time considering Gathright a better option.
  7. yeah, you don't have to be a Pie fan-boy by any means to see how this has been mishandled. it's exactly why Hendry needs a huge payroll to be successful.
  8. This bothers me. The reason they don't have the luxury to run Pie out there to see if he can hit is because they blew it last year. They had that luxury for the first half of 2008 when the rest of the offense of rolling. They had a great oppurtunity to keep running Felix out there to see if he'd adjust and they didn't do it. On top of that, Hendry's statement hear still doesn't explain why Gathright is considered a better option than Pie as a backup. Once you factor in cost, age, and potential it's a no-brainer Pie is the better option. The only possible explination is that Hendry thinks he can get something of value by trading Pie, which I doubt.
  9. i'd like to think so but i don't know where he'll fit. you already have five other OFs in Soriano, Fukudome, Bradley, Johnson and Gathright. the most likely person to be left out this point if they want Hoffpauir is probably Cedeno and then go with an IF of Ramirez, Lee, Theriot, Fontenot, Miles. Hoff can also play 1B, of course, which helps.
  10. i'm a little worried about the snowball effect taking hold if they don't win one of these soon. they've had two chances to get an early win and have blown both. that's to be expected from this team, but i'd hate to seem them get so down that they can't bounce back. as much as i don't care about their record this season, i have to admit i'd be upset if they went 0-18. they have some really tough games coming up now (well, they're all tough for this team, but you know what i mean). just win one, fellas.
  11. really. they're already taking so many chances with injury-prone players, they might as well go for it. maybe they luck into all of them being healthy in October and they're golden. if the Cubs could field a healthy rotation of Harden, Zambrano, Sheets, Dempster and Lilly i'd probably poop in Banedon's bathtub.
  12. i'm a pretty big Guzman fan-boy, but i wouldn't stick him in the rotation (because of injury concerns). Greinke would be great, but i don't know what KC needs or is looking for right now. Pie might be a starting point since they just took a devistating loss in Gathright. :^o
  13. what research? the Tom House stuff? color me unconvinced. i have no idea why i even bothered with the argument though. i don't really care who does and doesn't like Mark Prior on a personal level. to each his own, i suppose.
  14. wait......after you posted this: you called somewhat out for not having substance in their post? that's fantastic... 1. of course he's injury prone. so far i've seen zero people dispute this, though your granny must be quite a speciman. but hey, guys that get injured never contribute anything in their career ever again, so there's that. 2. He had one outstanding season, yes. He also had three very good seasons (2002/2004/2005). 3. Why is he a prime candidate for 'roids? Because you say so? Because he had injuries? That is some serious substance, dude. Don't know why we didn't consider that one before someone started a thread wondering where he'd end up, if anywhere. Totally substantive, and relevant. 4. Surly with the media? How? Also, very relavant though. Kudos. 5. I think you're just making this one up but (1) I don't really care enough to find out; and (2) I have no idea why this matters.
  15. i don't have a problem with signing miles as a backup, but $4.9 million for two years is insanity.
  16. wait, is the $5 million right? oh no.....
  17. the new thread title tells lies. i don't see anything saying it's a done deal.
  18. I think it's a joke. Please...let it be a joke.
  19. Is Kevin Jones signed through next year? I was thinking he only signed a one-year deal but I can't remember. I think it's reasonable to expect a little more from him next year now that he'll have a year under his belt since the surgery. I'd like to see the Bears go strong after Housh or Boldin and use the draft to address OL, DL, DB, LB (more or less in that order).
  20. NEARLY KILLED HIM I wonder if you got Eric one on one now if he would admit to you he made a huge mistake listening to his dad and Kelvin? me and another IU alum were talking about this today. when we saw his quotes about last year's team we thinking what he really wanted to say was, "I should have gone to Illinois".
  21. Yeah, that's not suprising. Between the drugs, the cheating and the grades, Sampson did a bang-up job. Jesus. Quick question; how common do you think something like this is? I mean, it is college afterall. I'm sure some teams are much worse than others, but I always kind of wonder. I don't think it is as bad as this at all at most places. At least not during the season when there is random drug testing going on. After the season ends is a different story. right. that's kind of how i looked at it.

  23. it just doesn't look like NYG will be playing for anything that last week against MIN. their seed will be decided this week against Carolina, no?
  24. 1995 13-year-old KyleJRM listening to the 49ers/Falcons game knowing there is no *way* Steve Young fails to get a measly field goal drive to win it and put the Bears in the playoffs. Oops. I was at the Bears/Eagles game. Christmas Eve. The stadium started to worry when the scoreboard stopped showing the other game's score. i was at that game too. ugh. So was I. It was maybe my 4th or 5th Bears game ever, went with my brother and dad when I was home from college. i was a senior in HS. it just dawned on me though; that was the last time i've been to soldier field. yikes. i need to fix that.
