  1. We are still trying to win next year aren't we? Why in the world would you trade one of your top two starters? As some others have pointed out, I don't think trading Lilly means they aren't trying to win next year. They may have the SP depth to do both. If the offense is going to be upgraded, they likely need to free up some money. I think Lilly, and possibly Dempster, are among the few tradeable assets the Cubs have they may bring is some reasonable value and free up cash.
  2. I'd definitely entertain offers. Not sure you'd get much for one year of a 34 year old non ace pitcher. But they probably have to do something to free up money and bringing in more talent to the organization. Right. The bolded would be my main objective. They need to upgrade the offense and may have the depth at SP to trade Lilly or Dempster if Harden is re-signed.
  3. i like this idea too, although i'm not sure how easy it would be to get a taker for dempster's contract. Agreed. It would be ideal, but I don't think it is too realistic what about trading Lilly? 1 year $12 million left with no-trade protection.
  4. not to mention that there were plenty of people saying, "Well, it's the Nationals" during that series, as well as, "It's the Pirates" yesterday.
  5. yeah i think any legitimate suggestions at up-grading the offense/bullpen via free agency probably needs to be accompanied by a suggestion to reduce payroll elsewhere. and i don't mean "find someone to take Miles".
  6. what i really want to know is when his next album is coming out.
  7. My thoughts exactly, except Hendry needs to fix the bullpen too. Move Theriot to second, find a good SS, make a decision on Harden (I hope we keep him but I'm not counting on it) and add some friggin depth. I swear, I almost had a stroke when I realized Hendry was willing to go with Miles, Johnson and Gathright as our primary bench players this year. Sincerly awful. Do you guys think the Cubs will have the $ to re-sign Harden plus upgrade at SS and the bench without trading any of the larger contracts? I don't.
  8. No doubt, I didn't feel super comfortable with it either. But maybe you don't need to trade Lilly to get Reyes, or maybe Harden takes arbitration, or maybe there's a good trade opportunity that comes along if that's too much risk for some to take with the rotation. I'm hoping Harden loves Chicago so much that he takes arbitration and we work out a reasonable 1-2 year deal with him (ideally 1-year with a team option or something). I'd be more comfortable trading Lilly if we had Z and Harden (even though Harden's going to miss some starts). I would absolutely be in favor of looking to move Lilly or Dempster if Harden returns. They are nearly the only guys who a) have value; b) are tradeable; and c) help shed payroll. If they want to add offense at SS or 2B, they'll pretty much have to do this, IMO.
  9. uhhhhhhh....
  10. Hall use to at least hit LHP well, but he hasn't even done that this year (in 87 PAs). He fell off a freaking cliff.
  11. no kidding. i mean, yes, you're likely to lose the game and it probably doesn't matter, but that was the only outside chance they had to even consider getting back in that game and he sends up the absolute worst person imaginable. why not just give it a chance?
  12. I'll go ahead and guess he's done for they year. Oh boy...
  13. I'm generally pretty un-creative on this sort of stuff. Right now my team name for this year is "Achievers" with a picture of The Dude as my logo. Meh...
  14. Let me guess, you're a Cubs fan first, Cardinals hater 2nd, baseball fan 3rd? hahaha...it was a freaking joke. i could care less about the cardinals relative to most people here. but otherwise, yes. you're right.
  15. I hope the opposite of those things.
  16. you gotta be kidding me. they sent down Stevens instead of Shark? f that noise. i need a beer.
  17. I'd say Zambrano, Wells and Harden are all guys that could benefit from a little extra rest.
  18. God, yes. He could literally be our new (and improved!) Mark DeRosa, in that he can spell all corner IF and corner OF positions and be our backup catcher. How many ABs does a backup catcher get in a year? I've got to think that 150 at bats of Fox over Koyie Hill would be worth a ton. If it was a role he would embrace, he could gobble up a lot of at bats. There is a drawback to him being the only back-up catcher in that Lou would hesitate to use him as a PH in games he didn't start and he'd pretty much have to stay in games he did start in case Soto were injured (at least, that's how I think Lou would see it).
  19. when is Lilly expected back?
  20. Harden absolutely needs the extra rest. I don't think they need to go 6-man from here on out, but a couple weeks of giving a couple guys some extra rest is more than reasonable. Right. I wouldn't go with a 6-man for the remainder of the year, but it's a good oppurtunity to give some guys some extra rest in late August/early September. They wouldn't even have to go with strictly rotating six men in order but maybe just let a guy skip a start here or there. Maybe let Zambrano, Wells, Dempster and Harden each skip one start or something (with Gorzelanny taking their spot). I'd have to look closer at the schedule to see how this might work out time-wise, but it might be worth exploring. But all of this is assuming, a) Lilly comes back healthy; b) someone else doesn't go down with an injury; and c) Gorzelanny doesn't crap the bed.
  21. Seconded. Now you apologize to Jay, Tomy.
