  1. Just to rub it in a bit boys, but I was 11th row behind home plate, temps in the mid to low 80's, not a cloud in the sky. Hoffpauir's Grand Slam was a no doubter at the crack of the bat. He crushed it, it had that resounding CRACK that tells you he hit it solid. He hit it into one of the deepest parts of the park, in deep right center, closer to center which is 410 straightaway. Probably hit it 400 or more. Alfonso had a couple of nice at bats fighting off some tough pitches. Theriot looked good too, very patient.
  2. All this line up discussion gets silly after a while. Ultimately Lou's best course of action is to split up the lefties and the righties down through the order as best he can... Soriano Fontenot Ramirez Bradley Soto Fukudome Lee Theriot Bradley's numbers are much greater in the clean up spot for some reason, and I like the idea of guaranteeing an at bat for Ramirez every 1st inning. Lee may be batting a bit low, but this is strictly a line up to split up the left handers and right handers.
  3. we can only hope. Your prayers have been answered boys! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=imd7S6Xwh4c
  4. There's not much insentive for "Jellyroll" Jones to get into "shape". The Dodgers are paying him 22 million over the next 6 years. Maybe he still has something to prove, but I wouldn't pay him much to prove it.
  5. You know Logan, I was getting ready to say, are you kidding me? Then I looked at Garland and Marquis' career numbers side by side. They are nearly identical. Amazing how close they resemble each other actually, with the exception of Garland being a bit more of a workhorse with innings pitched throughout his career.
  6. Obtaining Peavy has become quite the off-season obsession, but hopefully everyone won't be too disappointed if it doesn't happen. The Cubs still have the best starting rotation (when healthy) in the NL without Peavy, so let's keep it in perspective. Some rotation depth could be added by Hendry, but some of the names still available come with a fairly high price tag for a 5th starter role. The Cubs may end up using a 5th starter by committee approach until someone steps up into the role, my bet it's Marshall. Some teams don't even know who their 3rd starter will be, let alone worrying about filling their 5th spot, so once again, keep it in perspective.
  7. But Aaron Miles makes that less pathetic? DeRosa is much better at hitting RHP than Miles. But this isn't about Miles, it's about acquiring Milton Bradley. Look, I hate losing DeRosa, never said I didn't, but as Hendry said, they couldn't move Ramirez, Soriano, Fukudome, or Lee, so DeRosa was the next name on the list that Hendry considered expendable to make salary room for a Milton Bradley contract. 3yrs of Milton Bradley + the 3 prospects from the Indians V.S. 1 more year of DeRosa...I don't like it necessarily, but I understand it.
  8. Dexter, you are such an angry little poster...Welcome to my ignore list..you are insufferable.
  9. I can defend my argument...I have watched the heavy RH hitting Cubs line up fail consecutively two straight years in the post season and a change needed to happen. Whether it's Bradley, Dunn, Abreu, Hermida, Hoffpauir, or Miles, the Cubs need some left handed hitting, who can argue they don't? It's just plain to see. Lou has said it, Jim has said it, Steve Stone has even said it. Sorry but I think they may be on to something, and to enter the post season with Fukudome and Gathright as your main LH hitters is pathetic.
  10. The day I trust the opinion of a message board poster (Dexter), or my own opinion for that matter, over two seasoned veteran personnel decision makers (Jim and Lou), I will quit my day job and become a GM. Dexter...This isn't a competition to see how many opinions you can rip into in one day, I see your combative posts every day and they are tiresome. Try some decaf dude.
  11. Some of you are too caught up in my saying that Miles should lead off. I just threw that lineup out there as an example. Ok, move Miles down to the 8th spot move Soriano back up to lead off, whatever. I'm just saying another LH bat in the line up come post season is a good thing.
  12. Dexter you said, "the Cubs lost because they couldn't hit RHP" is false and is a myth? What more evidence do you need to see in the POST SEASON. I don't give a hoot about the regular season and how well they did against some of the3, 4 and 5 RH starters in league during the REGULAR SEASON. In the POST SEASON, you are going against 1's and 2's RH Pitchers on most teams, this is where the Cubs have failed. I guess Jim and Lou disagree with you then about the need for left handed hitting. Meh, what do they know, they have only about 80 years of baseball knowledge to fall back on...
  13. I'm not arguing the fact that DeRosa won't be missed, and Miles is a downgrade, but this trade was also to free up the cash to acquire Milton Bradley, so don't lose sight of that. Look at it as Marquis and DeRosa, for Milton Bradley, Arron Miles, and 3 pithcing prospects, maybe that will take away some of the sting for some of you. My point is, the Cubs can't go into the post season again the way they were constructed the past two years. Does anyone want to take a crack again at Derek Lowe or Brandon Webb with Fukudome and Jim Edmonds as our sole LH hitters in the lineup? Lou and Jim don't either.
  14. To say Miles can't hit is quite a stretch. The reason he was signed is because he is a capable hitter. The guy hit .290 and .319 with an OBP of .342 the last two years with the Cardinals, granted not in a full time role, but I think Miles can duplicate these numbers and hit around .300. A lead off guy hitting around .300 with an OBP of .330 is respectable.
  15. The bottom line here is what have the Cubs accomplished in the post season? They have flaws in a short series against tough right handed pitchers, it's been proven two years in a row. Trust me, I hate losing DeRosa, but loading a lineup of lefties against these tough right handers in the post season seems like a practical way to forge ahead. Would DeRosa be better in the regular season than Miles? Most definitely. But at least Lou will have more flexibility with Miles and Bradley together than with DeRosa alone, as far as a post season short series is concerned. This is what Hendry and Lou are looking for in my opinion. I know I have the Cubs in the playoffs already, but seriously, I would be shocked if they didn't win the division going away. For example, say the Cubs have to play the Dbacks in round one against Brandon Webb and Dan Haren...Playoff line up Miles SS Fontenot 2B Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Bradley CF/RB Soriano LF Soto C Fukudome RF/CF Zambrano P Right there you have 5 lefties if you include Z in the mix. You've got stir the pot a little, whatever the Cubs have done the last two years in the post season, obviously didn't work. Also, look for Bradley to get a bit of the Harden treatment late in the season to keep him fresh for the post season.
  16. With the articles I'm reading talking about the glut of closers on the market, I still haven't given up hope that Woody still comes back. I mean what if his best offer on the table is 3yrs/24 Million to go to say the Mets? Then the Cubs come back with a 1yr deal worth 8 Million. Which one do you think Woody would take? Logically you take the 24 million, but money isn't everything to Woody it seems. That boy loves him some Chi-town. Guess we'll have to wait and see, but if I were Hendry, I wouldn't completely shut the door on a 1yr deal. It's a pipe dream I know, but don't underestimate how much Woody would want the opportunity to come back next year for one more try.
  17. What numbers are these? Are these his numbers against lefties? I see his numbers from last year as 1.36 WHIP and 4.15 ERA total. Looks like another "scrap heap du jour" from the Cardinals. Nothing special.
  18. Oh no, the spelling police got me... RAMIREZ Didn't I say "just for kicks", I'm just throwing out some possibilities of getting Hoffpauir's LH bat in the line up by getting rid of Lee. Ichiro is a long shot I'm sure, but stranger things have happened.
  19. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?entryID=3709231&name=gammons_peter And then Gammons commenting on the Dempster signing mentioned he still thought a deal with the Braves and Padres for Peavy would still happen eventually. Gammons is assuming Peavy would accept the deal to go to Atlanta? Guess this will test DonnieD's statements. Video of Gammons comments about Dempster's signing, and Peavy's chances of going to the Braves... http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3711171&categoryId=2521705
  20. Not too thrilled with Teahen, so I personally think Hoffpauir is the left handed bat the Cubs could use in the 3, 4, or 5 spot, unfortunately it seems he's not the right player to play anywhere but 1st base. Hoffpauir plays a solid 1st base according to Iowa reports. I know Lee has a NTC, but what about looking at some of the west coast teams that need a 1st basemen. Lee may be willing to lift his NTC to be closer to his home in Sacramento. Maybe there's a team out west who needs a 1st baseman in exchange for a left handed hitting RF. I haven't looked at what the Angels, Giants, Oakland, etc. have in that department yet, but maybe someone would take him. You could add the lefty RF and the lefty 1st baseman in Hoffpauir. The Cubs could get two LH bats (Hoffpauir and a LH RF acquisition) with one stone (Lee). Just for kicks...How about Lee, Theriot, and Kevin Hart for Ichiro Suzuki (not sure if he has a NTC, probably), while signing Furcal for SS. 2009 Line up: Ichiro RF or CF Furcal SS Soriano LF Rameriz 3B Hoffpauir 1B Soto C DeRosa 2B Fukudome/Johnson RF or CF Platoon Pitcher Just brainstorming...Call me crazy, but I like this lineup, and I think Lou would too.
  21. This quote in the article scares the Howry out of me. If Dempster somehow signs elsewhere the "contingency plan" had better be Derek Lowe, AJ Burnett, or get a deal done for Peavy at all costs. Signing Randy Johnson to a one year deal is not a contingency plan.
  22. No, I'd rather use him in the role that is most important to the team winning games and just manage his innings well instead of using him idiotically. Well let's hope Gregg does the job as the closer, but I think he will have a short lease with Marmol chomping at the bit. I know having Marmol in his same role as last year is better for the team, but after a few blown saves by Gregg early on in the season, Lou and Larry may not have a choice.
  23. Kevin Gregg nets us draft picks if he closes for us and closes well. Carlos Marmol can be more effective for us if he isn't closing. That's as far as I need to think about it. But how will Marmol take the news that he isn't going to be closer? I'm sure he would be a little trooper and say the right things like, "whatever's best for the team" and such, but you have to think the guy will want to close. Put yourself in Marmol's shoes, don't you think he deserves it? I'm not saying Marmol closing is the best thing for the team, but the way Larry and Lou managed his innings last year has me somewhat concerned.
  24. I for one think Marmol deserves first crack at being the closer. I know how important he can be putting out fires in the 7th or 8th, but this could lead to him be overused again, like right before the Allstar Break last year, when he fell apart for about a month. If you have a guy who you know could be a premier closer in Marmol, wouldn't you just give him the job, and work around him with the other guys in set up roles. Marmol would thrive in the closer role, Lou and Larry could manage his innings much better than they did last year, and keep him fresh, strong, and healthy all year long. Just my two cents.
  25. Did you miss this story? No, I saw it, just in denial I guess.
