  1. The only surprise here is that MLB let it leak in the first place. We all knew they weren't going to let their reigning MVP get busted.
  2. Well this out to piss off the entirety of Oriole's Hangout. Some of them were envisioning Bourjous, CJ Cron etc in return for Guthrie.
  3. Apparently if a player doesn't have superstar potential he's not worth watching. I'm excited to see if some of these moves work because they may fill holes with above average to average players very cheaply and that allows the Cubs to spend money on superstars. It will also be exciting to see if some of the people brought in can play well and net a good prospect at the break. By the way, what was wring with the Dejesus signing? I can't believe anyone would be unhappy with what 99% of people were calling a good signing for the Cubs.
  4. Please don't. I don't find this half as annoying as pages of discussion on how to say his name. Maybe that's just me being bitter after seeing new posts and mistakingly thinking it is new information.
  5. Based on what? Do you have a bunch of information on Cespedes that nobody else does? I'm hoping it's not an overreaction to a few winter games.
  6. Without Turner or Castellanos I don't see how a deal could get done. After the first five or so prospects the Tiger's system drops off a cliff. Crosby and Smyly are good second pieces but they aren't headliners.
  7. Volstad was a DFA rumor just a month or so ago was he not? I just don't see peripherals that scream upside.
  8. If we're intent on being a [expletive] team, why not let Z pitch for 3 months, prove he can coexist with people and then trade him rather than trade him fresh off a hissy fit suspension by our blowhard ex-GM. The Hendryness of this move is very troubling to me. because that's likely. Is nothing really that different from Volstad? I'm quite sure there were guys this offseason who could have given you a similar performance for similar money without paying Z to pitch elsewhere. It doesn't matter if it was likely, there was a chance. The Cubs could have found a half dozen Volstad's this offseason. If the return is nothing, then hold out for the 1% chance Z can make himself valuable again and at least bring a lottery ticket or two back. And there was at least an equal chance Z stank and maybe blew his top again and we get absolutely nothing for him.

  10. The Marlins couldn't put together a worthwhile package for Garza anyway. Agreed, but they do make nice leverage.
  11. Really inexplicable trade. Even with the saved money, once the Cubs pay Volstad they're back at square one. The worst part is the Cubs just got rid of one of the Garza bidders in this deal. A rotation of Dempster/Wood/Wells/Volstad/? How this team sniffs 65 wins I don't know.
  12. Well if the Orioles do pick up Crisp I guess that Adam Jones to Atlanta for Jurrjens+ rumor will pick up a lot more steam.
  13. Yeah, that's a definite no deal. The highlight of that package is a starter who may end up in the bullpen because of the return of his inability to throw strikes. If that's all the Yankees are offering the. It's time to move to Turner+ or any variation of the Blue Jay's packages.
  14. If the Cubs land 2 of Marisnick/Syndergaard/Gose/Nicolino/McGuire then I'd say it's at least on par. If they get 2+ another good piece then I think it's a clear win.
  15. Is there really a tangible value difference between Gose and Marisnick? It seems to be the consensus that Gose has more upside, but also more doubt that he reaches it. If they're valued similarly then I'd be thrilled with Gose/Nicolino/McGuire. Gose has the potential to be what BJ Upton should have been. I just wish there was a way to get Nicolino and Syndergaard in the same package.
  16. A little misunderstanding, these moves are over the course of the next two offseasons. The Cubs will have roughly 43M this offseason+10M thanks to CBA. If the Cubs trade Marmol as I suggested we further increase our available money so that Pujols(26), Darvish(19), Cepedes(7) and Kelly Johnson(8) are affordable. The two aforementioned trades would take place this offseason as well. In the next offseason Z and Demp come off the books and you look to move Sori for whatever savings you can get. This should allow you some where in the neighborhood of 40M to spend. If Hamels gets 19 and Ethier gets 12 we're still left with a sizable chunk to pay the extra salary from Gio/Chase and address arbitration. Now is this all likely? Of course not, but a team like that would be very competitive and it could be done in two years without any significant payroll increase.
  17. Topic is a bit old, but relevant. I think my estimations are realistic. 1B- Pujols(26M) 9/235 2B- K.Johnson(8M) 2/16 SS- Castro 3B- Headley (Vitters,Dolis,Rhee) Too much? C- Geo RF- B.Jackson CF- Cespedes(8M) 7/50 LF- Ethier (12M) 5/60 SP: Hamels(19M) 5/95 I don't think Phillies can afford him Garza Darvish(19M) 40M posting fee with 5/55 deal Gio (Szczur,McNutt,Hernandez) Enough? Cashner/Wells Closer: Marshall, maybe Cash if his arm can't hold up. The Cubs have I believe 43M available this year with another 10M likely thanks to the CBA. Add in the money saved when you shop Marmol for prospects and that should be enough, or very close to enough, to cover the Pujols,Johnson,Cespedes and Darvish signings. In 2013 they have in the neighborhood of 40M to spend. Hamels/Either will eat the majority of that with arbitration eating the rest. Granted the lineup lacks the true second impact bat, but the depth is awesome. Combine that with a pitching staff likely in the top few in baseball and I think you have a team that can challenge for a championship. Thoughts?
  18. If we want Alonzo its going be be Garza or bust. I sure hope you don't mean straight up. If the Reds want Garza it had better pull 2 significant pieces on top of that. I would think Marmol would be plenty, especially if you kicked in 5M on an already relatively cheap deal.
  19. That would be incredibly unethical. In what way? Feigning interest in someone for leverage sake is a nice ploy and I don't see anything even remotely wrong with it. Now if you're talking about Sveum's perspective then that sucks a little, but it's not like it's going to cost him a job or anything.
  20. I'm still waiting to find out who this elite offensive, elite defensive, young and in shape player is. The only person I can think of is Votto, but then you have to empty your farm and still give him a massive contract. There is no perfect candidate; any player is going to have a flaw of some sort. You can't let your fear of past failed contracts keep you from making moves in the future. With Pujols/Fielder, they will likely outperform their contracts in the first couple years. That being the case, I'm not too upset if they fall below value in the last couple.
  21. why give up Cashner for Liriano when Cashner will probably have the better career moving forward? Liriano is just as likely to get hurt and Cashner will be cheap for a while. I don't know that I do this straight up let alone including Ha and Rusin.
  22. I have no real interest in Jackson based on what I think he will likely be offered. He's always had good stuff, but is just as likely to get rocked as he is to pitch a gem. Unless he's willing to sign for something around 3/24 then no thanks. With that said, I wonder if the Cubs could swing something with the Braves to pick up Hoover. With Delgado,Minor,Beachy and Teheran either contributing or looming, I would think he's available. Perhaps eat some of Byrd's contract inorder to pry him away.
  23. God [expletive] damn it, it's already started. This is going to end up giving me an aneurysm between now and next year. Not here, thank god. People I know, other various sites, etc. This place is my where I come when I want to slam my face onto my desk after talking to other people about the Cubs. Even if Dave occasional makes me want to do it as well.

  25. This could be a blessing in disguise. Bruce can use the fact that he actually knows baseball to replace the god awful Phil Rodgers, and as a result, I won't want to smash my face into my keyboard when I read the column in the Tribune.
