The kid can hit, but my god, he's just entirely unplayable on the field and the bat just isn't big enough to warrant the positions he's going to be forced into.

I'm still curious why he's using total contract value. Soto is going to get a 10 or 12 year deal because he's crazy young and at 30M a year that would be 300-360M. 30M for an elite bat at 1B is a completely reasonable number. Even if it was 35M it's not like it's a huge jump from the current 1B market on an annual basis.

He would likely be the better 1B but it's a loss in value from him staying in LF and moving Soto to 1B.

Any offensive value he loses by moving from LF to 1B, he's more than likely going to gain back on the defensive side of things so the value remains roughly the same regardless of position and that's why I don't get why this is even an argument where Happ would have to move.

It's baffling. Give up all that talent and pay all that money to Soto and take all that value you just got in acquiring Soto and wash half of it away by removing Happ from LF and putting a far inferior defender there, just because he makes a lot of money.

Sweet they get significantly worse defensively at 2 positions.

If the value is the same at either position, why does it matter which one he plays? In this scenario the Cubs have a 3.6 fWAR player in LF already and a big nothing at 1B. If Soto is going to put up 5.5 fWAR at either LF or 1B, I really don't see what difference it makes. This isn't a Cody Bellinger situation where Bellinger derives a lot of of his value from his defense at a premium position so moving him to 1B would like cost him a few wins.

Unfortunately I believe Alonso is much more likely than Soto and I'm not willing to let 3B be covered by Wisdom/Madrigal all year if the Morel experiment fails. With that said, I think minus Soto, this is what we're pretty likely to see.

He's bad defensively in the OF. I don't think he loses any value at all by shifting to 1B if he can be a neutral defender.

I'm nearly positive Trestman is gone, but I'd actually be fairly surprised if they cut ties with Poles. It's not that I think he's doing a good job, I just don't think he has been as glaringly awful as Trestman.

I agree Young has been super underwhelming, but Stroud has been kind of great. He's 4th in the NFL in passing yards and has yet to throw a pick.

Yamamoto is the #1 priority, because as CubinNY said, they only cost money while filling a huge need. I'd say priority number 2 is a big bat at either 1B or 3B. I'm cool with Alonso if you can get it done without involving PCA/Horton, but if you're going to make a big splash using prospect capital then please grab Juan Soto instead and throw him at 1B. I was game for Chapman as a cash only addition but I've soured on him a lot. 30 years old, coming off a 110 wRC+ and hasn't broken 120 since 2019. He's a nice player, but not the impact bat the team needs. I'd love to take a chance on Moncada if he comes at a reasonable price. He seems to have worn out his welcome on the south side. Realistically I'd feel pretty great about this roster going into the season C- Gomes 1B- Alonso 2B: Hoerner SS: Dansby 3B: Moncada RF: Seiya CF: PCA LF: Happ DH: Morel Bench: Amaya, Madrigal, Tauchman, Mervis, Canario SP: Steele, Yamamoto, Stroman, Hendricks, Taillon(god I'd love to dump this contract)

2 boxers/managers throwing a fight is the not the same as the commissioner and all the major players in the NHL getting together to rig a sport. If 2 boxers do this, you kick them out of the sport and while there is damage to the sport as a whole, it's mostly the two involved. If the NHL rigging came from the very top, hockey would more or less die. The fan's faith in the outcomes of all games would be gone, the gambling scene would be completely gone, etc.
