  1. It's a shame, because this is a gamble I would have been willing to take. Even if he doesn't pan out as a starter, you have the makings of a dominant pen arm.
  2. I mentioned Santander a couple months back, but the issue is that Baltimore is going to want someone they can plug into their rotation, as an upgrade, immediately. The Cubs don't really have that. If for some reason they were willing to take prospects, then absolutely, but they're a WS quality team and they aren't going to move Santander at the cost of their chances this year.
  3. This offseason is full of weird emotions. The surprise and the high expectations coming off the Counsell signing, the excitement of the Ohtani pursuit, the realization that the Cubs weren't really all in on Ohtani and were never really in on either Yamamoto or Soto either. Then with each passing name, convincing myself that this is the one that's going to break the dam and yet the days of nothing continue to drag on. Now I just kind of alternate daily between desperation like "surely Jed is going to make a move today, he has to do something soon, right?" and the next day it's an apathy filled "I'm not sure I really care anymore, the odds of Jed putting an exciting team on the field is pretty low at this point, so whatever".
  4. These bowl games are terrible to watch now. Between kids sitting out because they're going to the draft and kids transferring, it's not making for a very good product on the field. I have no idea why they set the transfer date that early.
  5. Meanwhile people still having grand expectations for this offseason
  6. That would make more sense. Cowser+Ortiz is kind of what I've been guessing, Povich would be bonus. Holiday is 100% off the table and Basallo probably too. Cowser+Kjersted+Mayo carry similar value with Ortiz a big step down and completely blocked by Henderson.
  7. Povich would be at best a #2 piece in that deal and likely #3 if the Sox Cincy asking price was even remotely true.
  8. I'm leaning towards it meaning not much, but it's interesting that Caleb Williams' backup dropped 372 yards and 6 TDs on #15 Louisville.
  9. I'm not ready to say 5, but I comfortably think three and a pretty good shot at 4, so if he's in the COF/1B the last 3 years of the deal then that's fine with me.
  10. If reports from many sources are accurate, Seattle is ready to do just that. Though I recently read they could even be willing to move Castillo if they feel the need to shed some money.
  11. People made fun of the Cardinals for their FA SP signing just a month ago, but are now advocating for the Cubs doing the same thing. 1 front end starter surrounded by a half dozen mediocre to bad pitchers.
  12. Yes, the parts are available to make a clear division favorite, but they're going to have to actually win those players in FA. I find it increasingly unlikely that they're going to win the bid on all their guys. Also, you have to replace 4.1 fWAR in Bellinger and 2.7 fWAR in Stroman to get back to even. So even if they grabbed Bellinger and Montgomery, they likely aren't any better than the previous year even though they just spent 55-60M in 2024.
  13. I'd agree, they will almost definitely add a starter whether it be via FA or trade. The question is, will it be a starter of note or will it be just another back end arm. I suspect it wont be the first option.
  14. The division is there for the taking, trying to sneak past a greatly weakened Brewer team and a Cardinal team coming off their worst season in decades is not exactly inspiring.
  15. Illinois fans just aren't allowed to have nice things. horsefeathers.
  16. I don't think you can go into 2024 with 3 tremendous question marks and lots of money invested into Manaea, Taillon and Smyly. If Talilon or Smyly wasn't around, yeah I'd be game, but you can't go into 2024 with 3 pitchers surrounded by that much uncertainty.
  17. The NL Central is just sitting there for the for the taking and meanwhile Jed is busy scouring Goodwill for bargain deals. We're at a point where there aren't a lot of realistic scenarios to make the Cubs a clear favorite in the NLC. They're going to have to hit on just about all their targeted players from here on out. This slow played offseason has turned Bellinger, who most viewed as not particularly wanting based on his demands just a month or two ago, to almost making Bellinger a necessity to keep this offseason afloat. it is possible Jed pulls a rabbit out of the hat, but the margin for error continues to shrink.
  18. It's talked about because many of us feel that keeping PCA around if you sign Bellinger is counter productive. You don't give Bellinger starting CFer money only to move him to 1B where you could get equal talent for a lot less money on the open market.
  19. Because you see what a similar player in Bryce Young has done in the NFL. He's also not better in all ways to Fields. Fields is bigger, faster, throws a better deep ball. Williams has better pocket awareness and actually works the middle of the field with slants and crossing routes. They both hold the ball too long looking for the big play. I think the jury is still out on whether or not Williams is better at presnap reads than Fields. That is definitely not one of Justin's strong points, but he is slowly improving on that at least.
  20. I'm at the point where I'd put the odds on likeliest scenario being that they go into 2024 as an equal or worse team than they finished 2023. There's far too many things that would have to go just right for me to realistically believe they're going to put together a team projected for 90 wins, like I think most of us thought was imminent after the Counsell signing. If they don't end up snagging Bellinger, then things are going to start getting real dark around here.
  21. Well if you look at Freeeman for an example, then an elite 1B is 27M annually.
  22. I don't think this happens. If he's hitting well enough mid season to get your a TOR pitcher, they're not going to subtract him from the line up and if he's not hitting to the point where you don't care if you lose him in your lineup, you aren't getting a TORP. Contending teams don't move big bats out of their lineup in the middle of the season.
  23. I believe Seiya has come out and said that he dislikes DHing.
  24. Rather disappointed the Cubs seem to have no interest in Yariel Rodriguez. I guess it's justified if they don't see him as a starter, but as a pen arm, he's electric.
  25. That's also why, keeping PCA would make no sense.
