  1. This is my fear as well, though I must admit that Carlos has started out very well in his mission to make things easy. That was a bright spot in yesterday's suckfest.
  2. There's a 100% chance of rain in Mesa, possibly with thunderstorms. I think it's inevitable that both games wind up being canceled. That's a shame that it happens for one of the few televised games.
  3. Butler came back to win. Bubble teams everywhere are breathing a collective sigh of relief.
  4. That's the thing. I'm all for going after the good, consistent relievers out there (of which there are some). However, I don't know of any currently available. That's why I'm promoting the idea of going with what we've got and assessing again in a month or two. I actually wonder If Starlin really impresses this spring, we could try to trade Theriot for a good reliever. That way, we have Starlin at SS with Blanco backing him up and Font and Baker platooning at 2nd. Not to start the season. There have been plenty of players that have had good springs but faltered when the regular season begins (see: Scott, Gary). Castro would need to show regular season success before Theriot becomes expendable. Maybe around the trade deadline.
  5. My feeling is that they'll probably split carries much like Williams and Stewart in Carolina, and it probably doesn't make that much difference which one is officially the starter.
  6. Do they ever take just half a squad to a game and leave the rest in camp and call it "split squad"? I haven't heard of that happening, but I can't say that I know for sure it doesn't. Since this is a home game, though, it doesn't make sense to me. I'm guessing it was just an error on cubs.com. Tomorrow is split and next Saturday is split; it may just be a case of the split squad symbol being shown on the schedule for today by mistake.
  7. The schedule on cubs.com shows this as a split-squad game, but it doesn't show another game. Tomorrow is definitely split, at the White Sox (again on WGN) and vs. the Dodgers at Mesa.
  8. The Mike Martz offense employs only 10 players? And just think; it's Martz's own former player that he's leaving out.
  9. It's Cutler's fault. The TE walked off the field in disgust because Cutler threw too many interceptions. Actually he switched to the other team's defense so he could make one of the interceptions. :D
  10. You're missing a TE. You have a 10-man offense.
  11. I think it's nearly a certainty that Olsen is gone. There's no way the Bears would keep Manumaleuna, Clark, and Olsen. When Clark wasn't released despite the roster bonus that spelled the end for Olsen. If that is indeed the case, it sucks how old we will have made the position in just a couple moves, especially since Kellen Davis likely doesn't have a future since he wasn't that good to begin with and also is a receiving type of TE. I'm not disputing that; I just think the handwriting's on the wall. I really don't think the Bears would have kept Clark and paid him the roster bonus if they were also planning to keep Olson. The one possible exception I can think of is if they plan to use Olson more as a wide receiver, much like the Colts do with Dallas Clark. Ultimately, if they do trade him, I think it would be hard to really judge the trade until we see who the Bears pick with the draft pick they get in return. If they can get a good offensive lineman the trade may be very good.

  13. Yes he did. He was probably going to be the #1 QB next year anyway; Delhomme would have been an expensive backup.
  14. I renewed the group from last year. Those who participated last year should get an invite through Yahoo. For those who didn't participate last year but are interested this year (or for anyone whose e-mail address may have changed since last year) the group ID is 16102 and the password is gocubs. Last year I used a scoring system that included bonus points (based on seed differential) for correctly picking upsets and that was unpopular, so this year I went back to scoring based just on the number of correct picks (with the points per correct pick increasing each round).
  15. The Panthers released Jake Delhomme. Andy is in mourning. :D
  16. I think Mike Harkey deserves some love in this thread (unless I overlooked him being mentioned in an earlier post). He was looking like a good pitcher until he thought he was Ozzie Smith and tore up his knee doing a cartwheel.
  17. If by swapping you mean my second round pick for your first round pick I'm in. :D
  18. That would make me happy, because that would mean a collective bargaining agreement has been reached and there actually is a cap to take a hit against.
  19. I think there's one logical exception to this. If a person's roster is illegal prior to a trade, but the trade itself would make the roster legal (for example, a player is one above the limit but would be trading two players for one) then I think it should be allowed.I disagree - it encourages people like me to hoard talent that I can then use in 2-1 or 3-1 trades. Good point. You might own the entire first round of next year's draft if we allowed it. :D

  21. Now that this prospect draft is (FINALLY) over, I'm trying to think what we might be able to do to make it work better in the future. Last year we were planning to do a prospect draft in August after the signing deadline, but for some reason we never did. Personally I think that would be better timing. The real amateur draft would be fresher in people's minds, and I think during the season more league members would be on NSBB more regularly than now, so the delay between picks might not be as long. If we do that we might not need a prospect draft at this time of year since we can always use the waivers process to fill in gaps due to promotions, trades, etc.
  22. Only two picks left. Looks like we'll at least finish the prospect draft before the start of the major league draft.
  23. Kevin, Tim, and Don (assuming they're still picking), and that will be the end.
