  1. UGH, Good God, y'all. What is it good for? Absolutely nothing.
  2. Why? They have every intention of trying to sign him but they know it'll be difficult as he's a 2 sport athlete going to LSU to also play QB. If they can't reach that agreement, they get a similar pick next year. If you're signing a kid who hopes to play MLB (or at least is strongly considering it), but you draft him with no intention of signing him (your original position), then that's a lousy thing to do to a kid. You're stealing his dream for at least a year and potentially longer. I think a team drafting a player should be required to make some minimum competitive offer or else the player becomes a free agent eligible to sign with anybody so he doesn't lose a year and have to go through the draft again. I first started thinking about this the year of the strike threat where the Astros were talking about not signing any of their draft picks.
  3. I think Silva and Marmol are both in (unless Silva starts the Sunday before the break). Marshall and Byrd may get some consideration, but unless the Cubs kick into higher gear between now and selection time I'm not sure they'll get consideration for more than two spots.
  4. The Orioles had a long-term pitching coach named Miller several years ago (I forgot his first name), but I don't recall if that was under one manager or several. It also seems like Johnny Sain was the Braves' pitching coach for several years before Cox became manager, but again I'm not positive. This seems to me similar to a football coordinator surviving several head coaching changes. Rothschild's reputation as Cubs' pitching coach would probably have been even better had Dusty listened to him.
  5. That's how all Cub fans felt last year.
  6. Silva for Cy Young, with an assist to Rothschild (OK, maybe that's a bit overboard, but All-Star lock at this point). I'm starting to believe he's for real at least for this year. The question (which won't be answered until next year) is whether he's become a long-term star or whether he's this year's version of Kent Bottenfield or Esteban Loaiza.
  7. I'm not concerned with starting Hill last night (with today being a day game after a night game he would have started today if he didn't start last night; it was just a matter of which catcher started which game). However, there are enough other reasons to fire him (bullpen management especially).
  8. I'm not sure I'd make that assumption quite yet; Lou could have been just trying to light a fire under Soto with his comments. With a night game yesterday and a day game today it was a given that Soto and Hill would each start one of those games anyway; it was just a matter of who started which game.
  9. Ah, I wasn't sure what his class was.
  10. And it appears that MLB will investigate the legitimacy of Perez's injury. http://www.nydailynews.com/blogs/mets/ It could be a legitimate injury, but the timing seems rather suspicious.
  11. The streak is now up to 56, but on hold until next year (assuming he returns) because FIU was eliminated today.
  12. Perez conveniently came down with a knee injury and was placed on the DL today. The Mets needed to clear a roster spot for a player coming off the DL. Apparently they asked him to accept a minor league assignment to work out his troubles and he exercised his right to refuse.
  13. Better than a copied-and-pasted version.
  14. Granted. I really see two different issues here. Shore shouldn't have been credited with a perfect game in the first place since, even though he individually was perfect, the team wasn't (team pitching statistics were charged with one walk, and a no-hitter or perfect game is a team effort regardless of whether there was one or more than one pitcher involved). Given that he was credited with a perfect game under the rules that existed at the time, though, I don't think it should be taken away when the rules are changed. New rules should apply to the future, not retroactively to the past.
  15. If the game isn't perfect it obviously isn't a perfect game. It's called a perfect GAME, not a perfect individual performance.
  16. Shore didn't walk him. Ruth did. He was then retired trying to steal 2nd, then Shore set down the next 26 batters in a row. But that's not how it works. If more than one pitcher pitches NONE of the pitchers can allow a hit (for a no-hitter) or base runner (for a perfect game). Based on your logic the starter could, for example, allow 6 hits and 5 runs without retiring a single batter, then a relief pitcher could retire 27 straight and be awarded a perfect game even if his team loses.
  17. Len mentioned the same thing early in tonight's game. It wouldn't be realistic to have expected the Pirates players to have agreed to play a 21st consecutive day for the sake of the Cubs' convenience.
  18. The Cubs need to trade for him and call him up to the majors. :D Giovany Soto
  19. A rain-shortened game should count as a no-hitter. A game that goes 8 1/2 innings because the home team doesn't need the bottom of the 9th should be a no-hitter. Basically, it seems very simple to me. If a game goes in the books as an official game (regardless of length) and a team gives up no hits than it's a no-hitter. And if a team gives up no base runners it's a perfect game. But if a team gives up no hits through 9 innings, then gives up a hit in extra innings (e.g. Haddix, Hippo Vaughn) then it should not be a no-hitter. However, I don't think a player should lose credit for what was recognized at the time as a no-hitter or perfect game because of a change in rules. New rules should apply to the future, not retroactively to the past.
  20. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/tom_verducci/06/02/joyces.missed.call/index.html?hpt=T2 Sorry Mo, but in this case making arguably the worst call in the history of the sport automatically disqualifies you from being the best. Worst call, no. Unluckiest call (due to the timing), maybe. Calls that cost a team a rightful win are indisputably worse.
  21. Silva winning 20 is unlikely; Jiminez winning 30 is all but impossible. With the advent of 5-man pitching rotations there will never again be a 30-game winner unless the trend goes back to 4-man rotations.
  22. The Cubs should really object to that. There's no justification for making them travel back to Pittsburgh when they're already there with an off-day tomorrow.
  23. Good for him. Galarraga DID pitch a perfect game even if the umpire says otherwise.
