  1. The Pirates are responsible for their field's conditions. The game should have been forfeited to the Cubs, just like happened with the Sox on Disco Demolition Night.
  2. I don't know whether Selig has, but there is past precedent for a commissioner to use that clause. Back in the mid or late 1970s Charlie Finley tried to gut his team by selling some of his stars (Vida Blue is one that I remember) for nothing but cash, and then-Commissioner Bowie Kuhn voided those sales "in the best interests of baseball."
  3. You shouldn't feel bad for Joyce. He deserves everything he gets. Something like this is unforgivable. I really think in a situation like this Selig (or somebody in his office, such as Bob Watson) should have the authority to overrule the umpire's incompetent call and award Galarraga with the perfect game he in reality did pitch. It's not a judgment call, like the ball 4 call in Milt Pappas' almost-perfect game. In this case the batter was clearly, objectively out; no judgment involved whatsoever. The umpire was factually wrong. I wouldn't call it "unforgivable". Sure, people would say it was a crappy call if it came, say, in the 5th inning of a tie game, but it wouldn't be "unforgivable." However, I agree with the rest of your post. Yeah, "unforgivable" is perhaps a bit too strong of a term. Still a horrible call which requires action to keep from happening again.
  4. Yeah, Griffey's retirement should have been a big story but Joyce stole the attention.
  5. I think Selig could overturn the call. My understanding is that the "best interests in baseball" clause basically gives the Commissioner power to do just about anything if warranted, and in this case I think everybody would agree it's warranted. The official scorer could have helped, too (and maybe he still will after he has time to sleep on it). Even though the play clearly wasn't an error, it clearly wasn't a hit either, so he could have charged an error rather than a hit. The perfect game would still have been lost, but at least he would have a no-hitter.
  6. Absolutely. This call was clearly, factually wrong; no judgment involved whatsoever. Completely unforgivable.

  9. Minor nitpick: It will be 2016, not 2015, when he is eligible for the Hall. Since he did play some this year 2011 through 2015 will be the 5-year waiting period and he will be eligible for the election in Jan. 2016.
  10. Trammell would definitely give it his best shot. He'd probably see serving the rest of the year as interim manager as his chance to show he deserves the permanent job over Sandberg.
  11. That was actually several weeks ago, before I'd seen the light and written off this season. And what you had offered me would have been more a trade for the present than the future. But Morneau isn't a bad consolation prize at all.
  12. As of today it's now available for streaming on my LG Blu-Ray player. It showed up in the list of services available for streaming after a software upgrade. I'm not getting it this year since I already have Extra Innings, but I'll probably make the switch next year.
  13. Chad Tracy could be called back up and play 1B. But I don't see the Cubs trading Lee.
  14. He is now. He was transferred to make room on the 40-man for Cashner.
  15. Tennessee: Activated OF Brandon Guyer from DL C Mark Reed assigned from Daytona to Tennessee C Robinson Chirinos and LHP Ryan Buchter placed on DL
  16. Vitters played in the field for the first two innings (with an error and an assist in the 1st), then was pinch-hit for to lead off the top of the third. I got that from the game recap but saw nothing that indicates why he left the game.
  17. Plus I'm getting a highly ranked prospect (#1 on the Cardinals, #50 overall according to BA). Raisin could well be right and I could regret the opportunity cost later, but the idea just came to me when I realized Bukie suddenly needed a 1B for this year and he was able to help me for the future.
  18. You probably have the best DL in the league. :D
  19. North Carolina gets in despite not even qualifying for its conference tournament.
  20. One article I read (maybe it was the one I linked to) said they "hope" he will be in Pittsburgh today. It didn't specify whether that meant in time for today's game or arriving later today and available for tomorrow's game. EDIT: Len just mentioned that Cashner is here.
  21. Planet Hendry.
  22. I agree it wouldn't be a problem, especially since you can change your lineup midweek if it's due to a trade. If lineups had to be set by the start of the week without any exceptions it might be different.
  23. For those who need to see to believe.
  24. If I were trading with this year in mind I'd agree that it's a horrible trade. But I'm 2-6 and not deluding myself into thinking I'm in contention. As a present-for-future trade I think it's good (although somewhat risky). Morales has developed into a very good hitter in his own right (although admittedly not in the same category as Miggy) and will be a very cheap keeper for next year. And I got a top pitching prospect as well.
