  1. Yes. Whitey Lockman was 18 and Ted Tappe was 19. Both of them have Cubs connections. Tappe finished his career with the Cubs. After he his his HR as a 19-year-old with the Reds in 1951 he didn't hit another until his 1 and only season with the Cubs, 1955. And Lockman managed the Cubs for a few years in the 1970s, replacing Leo Durocher in 1972. Was Ted Tappe any kind to the backup catcher El Tappe that the CUBS brought up in '54 or '55 ?? I'd always assumed that they were brothers, but apparently not. They are not included in the list of brother combinations in the media guide, and both have Wikipedia entries that don't mention the other. El had a twin brother, Melvin Tappe, who was a minor league pitcher. It was 1954 when he made his debut, and he was later a member of the College of Coaches. It seems strange to me that the only two major leaguers with that last name both played for the same team at the same time (they were both Cubs in 1955) and were not related, but apparently that's the case.
  2. Guess I need to update this now, huh?

    Week 5

Navin has Lester against the Yankees tonight, so he could still pull it out.

Juan may come roaring back to stun Navin. Braden is perfect through 8.
  6. It would be nice to use one of them in appropriate situations when your starter is clearly gassed and the other team's best hitter is coming up. You mean use a lefty in a situation where you're SUPPOSED to use a lefty? Nah, we can never have that as long as Lou is still in charge.

So it should be Talbot counting and not Floyd. Since Al made his earlier posts Floyd has actually surpassed Talbot's score at least for now, but by only one point.
  9. This question was raised the other day in a couple of threads about Castro, but Iowa's roster move to make room for Tracy was placing catcher Mark Johnson on the DL with an ankle injury. Another move will need to be made once Gray reports.
  10. About time. What took you so long? :D

Talbot pitches for the Indians. His game started first. I have mixed feelings about this game. On the one hand it sucks being 0 for the season. On the other hand, having the number one pick next year would be nice. I take that back. I am unsure which game was first. Talbot is done and Floyd is still pitching. But I am not sure if it matters. Isn't it the highest score?? For the first offense it's the 8th start if one game started later than the other and the highest score among those two starts if both games start at the same time. For the second offense I believe it's the highest score for the week that you lose. There was discussion of this a few weeks ago when Chuck accidentally had 8 starts.
  13. I was also curious about this, given that the Cubs didn't announce a corresponding 40-man move to go with Castro's call-up. I think there was a vacant spot on the 40-man anyway, because cubs.com showed the roster at exactly 40 with both Castro and Tracy on it. If they ever do need to make room the first move would be to transfer Guzman to the 60-day DL (he's currently still on the 15-day). ESPN.com also says Tracy was optioned, so I think it's probably MLB Network that had it wrong.
  14. Iowa will likely need to make another roster move soon, besides making space for Tracy. Last I heard the Cubs are expected to activate Caridad from the DL on Monday. So unless another Cub goes on the DL with a real or phantom injury somebody will need to be sent down (Gray seems most likely to me).
  15. Cubs.com and espn.com are both still reporting that he was optioned to Iowa. The only place where I read that he was DFA'd instead was the scrolling news at the bottom of the screen on MLB Network last night. So my guess is that it's MLB Network that was reporting it wrong, and that the reason Iowa hasn't announced a roster move is that Tracy hasn't reported yet (he has 72 hours). He only played in the minors during 4 seasons before he was called up, so he's probably not out of options.
  16. There's a reason that just about everybody chose Heyward as their wild card pick in the home run derby.
  17. A follow-up on the earlier question about Iowa roster moves. Although cubs.com is reporting that Tracy was optioned to Iowa, MLB Network is reporting instead that he was designated for assignment. If that's true and he isn't being sent to Iowa right away they wouldn't have to make another move.
  18. A further comment on the roster move question. Although the Cubs' official release said Tracy was optioned to Iowa, MLB Network was reporting instead that he was designated for assignment. There's no need to deroster him to make room on the 40-man roster, because even with Castro's addition the roster is exactly at 40, and they can always clear a spot if needed by transferring Guzman to the 60-day DL. So I wonder if Tracy has the right to refuse a minor league assignment and become a free agent, and the DFA is to try to trade him before releasing him.
  19. Not really surprising if the way he was portrayed in Brian's Song was at all accurate. Are you referring to the original? I never saw the remake. Yes, the one with James Caan as Brian and Billy Dee Williams as Gale. I did see the remake, and that was a mistake.
  20. Mike Parisi has been demoted from Iowa to Tennessee to make room for Cashner. I don't think a move to make room for Tracy has been announced, but he may not have reported yet. He has up to 72 hours to report and they probably wouldn't need to make a roster move until then.
  21. Who was it that reported Castro's promotion was imminent? Bruce Levine said it could happen "at any point." I haven't seen anything from Sullivan on it. Some dude from ESPN Deportes reported it first via Twitter....then everybody else grabbed it. From what I read the ESPN Deportes report was based on a tweet from Castro himself.
  22. I just checked the transactions list on the Iowa web site and all that it shows is Cashner up and Parisi down. It doesn't even show Tracy joining from the Cubs. I believe a player has 72 hours to report after being sent down from the majors, so they probably won't need to make a move until Tracy reports.
  23. One of the moves, according to the Smokies' web site, is that pitcher Mike Parisi is going from Iowa to Tennessee. I don't know what the other move is; maybe somebody's going on the 7-day DL.
  24. Getting poked by a bull pin hurts. :D Seriously, although I don't know if it's accurate to say MOST pitchers start in the pen, it does happen frequently. Nolan Ryan, Fergie Jenkins, and Pedro Martinez are just a few examples of current or future Hall of Famers that started their major league careers as relievers or swingmen.
