  1. I don't know if this is related to the allegations or not, but UK's President announced today that he is stepping down as of June 30, 2011.
  2. Apparently Cal didn't pay enough hush money to the Turkish GM.
  3. ABC has a contract to show the NASCAR race that night which is why there is no prime time game. Why would you enter into that contract if you're ABC? It's not like it's a surprise that there's college football going on the 2nd weekend in September Richmond's race last year got more viewers than the LSU/North Carolina game this past weekend (and to look at a non-holiday week it finished just under the Texas/Texas Tech game that aired the following week last year) . It's hardly a lock that college football would get much higher ratings. And Richmond has the potential to be an important race because it determines who goes to the NASCAR playoffs so NASCAR has an incentive to insist that this race is on network TV. In the south NASCAR is a big deal (not for me, since I'm a transplanted midwesterner). NASCAR qualifying gets more coverage than the actual race itself in other racing formats. So the last race to determine who qualifies for the Chase certainly could be of more interest than early season college football games in this part of the country. Many NSBB members are in the Chicago area and may not realize how big NASCAR is elsewhere.
  4. why? Because Joe sent Johnson out after a 50 minute rain delay to pitch causing him to have Tommy John surgery. Reminds me of when Don Baylor sent Jon Lieber back out after a lengthy rain delay (I believe it was in 2002). Shortly thereafter Lieber needed TJS.
  5. I forgot to post this information earlier, but I'm also in an NFL Pick'em group that several NSBB members have been part of in the past. The group ID is 28051 and the password is fitzgerald (the commissioner lives in Arizona and is a Cardinals fan). The group has generally consisted of members of fantasy leagues that I'm in as well as NSBB members. Those who participated last year should have previously received an invitation when the commish renewed the group for this year. There are a couple of rules changes this year. First, the two lowest weeks' scores are dropped, so if you don't see this information until after the season has started you can still join and drop the week(s) you miss. Second, just like in Survival Football this year, the contest includes the postseason. I didn't bother starting a College Football Pick'em group this year because interest has been dying the past few years. Last year only four people signed up and only three made picks every week. With that little participation it just didn't seem worth it.
  6. Sorry I forgot to post the information before. Group ID 28051; password fitzgerald (the commissioner lives in Arizona and is a Cardinals fan). This isn't a league just for NSBB members; the commissioner is in some other fantasy baseball and football leagues I'm in. Those who participated last year should have received an invite when the commissioner renewed the league for this year. Also, if anybody is interested in Survival Football but didn't see the thread in Fantasy Sports the group ID is 4608 and the password is cutler.
  7. You seem to be confusing exemption status with minor league eligibility. For pitchers an exemption is burned in a year a pitcher has 5 starts or 10 total appearances, so the first exemption was barely burned in 2002. The exemption criteria are included in this thread under D. Keeper Roster.
  8. Makes more sense than what I thought.
  9. Nope; Memphis gets the playoff spot because of a better record in head-to-head play against Iowa. Iowa's season is over. I expect the Cubs to make some call-ups tomorrow. Chirinos, LaHair, Snyder, and Smith all deserve the call. As for Guyer, as far as current big league players, any idea what his ceiling is? The Cubs 40 man roster is full I believe, the best they can probably do is add two spots by putting Grabow and Caridad on the 60 day DL. I think Grabow to the 60-day DL is likely. Caridad I believe is on a rehab assignment with the possibility of joining the Cubs in September; unless that has changed he wouldn't be transferred to the 60-day.
  10. Are you just going to start one game thread this time? :D
  11. Because you enjoy torture.
  12. If they waited one day he could have sat for two games and actually had three days off to rest since there's an off-day on Thursday.
  13. Nope; Memphis gets the playoff spot because of a better record in head-to-head play against Iowa. Iowa's season is over. I expect the Cubs to make some call-ups tomorrow.
  14. I believe that stands for points per carry.
  15. I think that's far from a certainty given his injury history and the difficulties pitchers sometimes have with coming back from shoulder injuries (see: Prior, Mark). The Cubs must operate under the assumption that Guzman will not be back and let anything they get from him be a pleasant bonus.
  16. I didn't mean that it was any better (Cashner should have been starting for Iowa), just that their delusional thinking may have changed.
  17. Pretty stupid to guarantee that much given the labor uncertainty beyond this year.
  18. Id like to think that they wouldnt consider throwing their top pitching prospect into middle relief on a big league club with 0 playoff chance, but I never underestimate the stupidity of this organization anymore. You mean for a second time this year? When they did it with Cashner they were still pretending that they were in contention. I don't think they're still under that delusion.
  19. You actually started duplicate threads for the same game about 15 minutes apart (you must have been REALLY tired, or else REALLY something else :D ). Neither thread had any additional posts yet, so I deleted the duplicate.
  20. Another thought: Maybe they pulled him so they can call him up tomorrow after the pounding the bullpen took today.
  21. I wonder if they intended to limit his innings today so he'd be ready to pitch earlier in the playoffs. It certainly wasn't because of performance; he did well while in the game (0 runs, 1 hit, 2 K, 2 BB, 1 WP, 3-0 GB/FO).
  22. UNC Associate Head Coach John Blake has resigned effective today.
  23. Today was more like it. We even got help from the son of a former Cub (Ike Davis, son of Ron).
  24. It looks like Bryce Harper has slipped through my grasp the very last day of the season. I really thought I was comfortably behind this week.
  25. Playoffs? Are you kidding me? PLAYOFFS?
