It's 4 in a row (first 4-game winning streak of the year) and 6 of the last 7. They lost the last game in the Mets series 1-0 in extra innings; otherwise they might have a 7-game winning streak.
I didn't have a particular definition in mind (this is a poll taken from cubs.com, not my own). I think I'd consider an impact player to be a starting position player, or for a pitcher, a starter, setup man, or closer.
Maybe the Phillies can now sign the pitcher Jesus Sanchez that pitched for the Cubs a few years ago. A battery of Jesus Sanchez pitching to Jesus Sanchez would be funny. :D
What character issues did Brownlie have? I remember health issues, but not character. Maybe I'm imagining this, but didn't he holdout and reenter the draft after refusing to sign with someone? He held out for awhile after being drafted by the Cubs and talked about returning to school for his final year of eligibility, but he signed with the Cubs without returning to class.
Maybe, but his stock has fallen so much he just got sent down to AAA. That's just crazy. He was sent down for a rehab assignment. I didn't even realize he was on the DL. The source I saw (I believe it was scrolling at the bottom of the screen on ESPN) used the term option, but that was probably just a case of miswording it.
If Maddux had spent his entire career as a Cub, then it would have been a PR nightmare. Since he spent most of his best years with the Braves, however, I don't think it would be. I think the PR nightmare is a media invention.
This is the current poll on cubs.com. Given the level of interest in the minor league system on this board, I thought it would be interesting to run exactly the same poll with the same choices here and compare results. Note that the lack of an "other" option is an omission from the original cubs.com poll, not an oversight on my part.
Today (or tomorrow, depending on your time zone) is the Hall of Fame induction ceremony with Bruce Sutter being inducted. It will be telecast on ESPN Classic at 1:30 P.M. Eastern time.
It's simply Hendry's responsibility to find a way to fix it that fast. Waiting until 2009 means more than an entire century without a championship. That's not acceptable. Hendry created this mess, he MUST find a way to fix it quickly.
But at least the Knicks owner stated that significant progress would be required next year or Thomas will be fired. One of the problems with the Cubs' organization is that nobody is demanding any accountability from anybody else.
Nick Johnson and Austin Kearns also left the game early for the Nationals. I think it was probably just a case of giving players a little rest in a game that was out of hand anyway.
