    I don't think people are FULLY blaming Baker, but rather saying that his abuse is ONE contributing factor to his subsequent injury problems. And that I don't think you could dispute.

    Furthermore, he didn't miss a single start in either 2002 or 2003 (although he did leave a couple of games early in 2002 due to blisters).

    I think that was largely it. They already had picked up Rey Ordonez and Damian Jackson from the scrap heap and threw them back out again earlier that year.

    I may be going to the West Tenn at Carolina game tomorrow night to watch Gallagher pitch. It depends on the weather, which sounds iffy. The high is supposed to be about 96, with a cold front coming through late tomorrow resulting in a good chance of afternoon and evening storms, some potentially strong to severe. Hopefully they'll stay away during gametime.

    I don't think so. I believe that there is a rule that a PTBNL cannot be a player at the major league level that plays against the team he would later be traded to, and the Cubs still play the Braves this year. I remember some discussion about this a few years ago when speculating who would be the PTBNL going to Pittsburgh in the Ramirez trade (eventually turned out to be Bobby Hill).

    That has to be what he means. Irrevocable waivers are for other purposes (such as outrighting a player to the minors when he's out of options or to remove him from the 40-man roster).

    All Maddux did in his Dodgers' debut was pitch six no-hit innings and get the win in a 3-0 game. He was removed after six innings due to a 45 minute rain delay.

    I'd hope they're already trying, but it's the Cubs, so you never know. They very well may be. It's not public information who teams put on waivers, so for all we know Glendon could be one of them. Most teams routinely put several players on waivers after the deadline, since they can always revoke the waivers if a player is claimed by another team. It is true..I can't remember from what source it was, but I read something the other day where Rusch was listed as one of the names who still would have a decent chance of moving during August-in fact, he was the only Cub listed. I think he'd have practically a 100% chance of clearing waivers and being able to be traded. Any team claiming him would be responsible for his full salary the rest of this year and all of next year if the Cubs accept the other team's claim. We have the only GM dumb enough to do something like that.

    Glavine also only started 25 games in 1994, and Smoltz only started 21. Remember, that was the year shortened by the strike that wiped out the postseason.

    One of Gonzalez's walk-off bombs was a night game against Texas in 2002 (I believe in June). I was at that game; it was my first night game at Wrigley.

    I'm not sure about that. You could make an argument that the Cubs owe him a chance to make up for the likelihood that it was Dusty's abuse in 2003 that lead to his injuries the past few years (remember, he didn't miss a single start in 2002 or 2003; it was after Dusty abused his starters in 2003 that both Wood and Prior were injured more).

    I don't think Harry drove Brenneman out. It was as mentioned earlier in the thread. Brenneman wanted to televise games nationally for Fox as well as the Cubs on WGN, and the Cubs wanted him to commit himself exclusively to them. As far as Hamilton is concerned, although he has taken every opportunity to bash Harry, I think his real gripe was with WGN. He joined WGN as #2 television announcer under Jack Brickhouse with the understanding that he'd take over as #1 play-by-play guy when Brickhouse retired. Then that fell through when the Trib bought the Cubs and brought Harry in instead. Hamilton has been bitter about that ever since.

    Hmm, maybe that explains a lot. Tacoma used to be the Cubs' AAA team, back in the late 60s and early 70s (around the time Dusty came up to the majors). Maybe he's suffering from memory loss and thinks it's 1971, not 2006. :D

    No he isn't. He didn't start the season on the DL in either 2002 or 2003.

    I'm glad Gallagher isn't scheduled to start the Sunday game. That's the game in the series I'd be least likely to go to, since it will be played in the heat of the afternoon (although it does sound like the heat wave is expected to back off a little by then).

    Do you know who the scheduled starters are for the series starting this weekend at Carolina? I'm planning to go to the booming metropolis of Zebulon for at least one of the games (maybe more; a lot depends on the weather); knowing who's starting when would help me decide what game(s) to go to (I'm mainly interested in seeing Gallagher start).

    What he was actually suspended for was refusing to leave the field after being ejected.

    Juan Mateo. According to Dusty, Angel can't fly from McCarran to O'Hare and still be able to pitch. Ah. I'm sure he could have if the Cubs had the foresight to have him fly out yesterday. But that would have meant thinking ahead a day or two, which is too much to expect from the Cubs. I don't mind giving Mateo a chance, though. I just didn't think of him since it was stated when he came up that he'd pitch in relief.
