  1. Don't forget Kidd and McCurdy. They were a big part of that team too. They really had a good team that Majerus assembled (even though he left for Utah before that season). I'd really liked to have seen how far they could have gone had they pulled the game out against UNLV in the regional semis. I think they could have at least beaten Loyola Marymount and advanced to the Final Four (Ball State was the only team to play UNLV close the entire tournament).
  2. At least that's good crow.http://aviary.owls.com/crow/am_crow.jpg
  3. Must be an NSBB member who asked this question, given the Cobs reference. :D
  4. I'd like to hear Sandberg say what he thought of the Dusty era. I'm sure he wouldn't have too many nice things to say. Ken other than his players, who would have any nice things to say about the baker era? Darren. :D
  5. That would be fitting. Babe Ruth, Hank Aaron, and Willie Mays also finished their major league careers in the same cities they started (albeit for different teams).
  6. And Sosa, Ramirez, Borowski and Grudz. Didn't Walker also miss some time? 2004 was a disaster. In 2004, no. In 2005, yes.
  7. He'll be back after his induction into the HoF.. Assuming he gets in as a Cub. If he gets in there's no doubt it will be as a Cub, because that's where all his success was at. There's no other team he played for that would even remotely be a consideration (it's up to the Hall to decide what team a player goes in as, not the player's decision, so any hard feelings he might have towards the Cubs would be irrelevant).
  8. Who cares if Oscar Zamora needs surgery? He's been retired for many years by now. :D
  9. I would be shocked if they gave Prior more than 1 year at this point. There's no reason to offer it, unless he's willing to take peanuts in the 2nd year. Maybe they offer him an incentive-laden deal similar to Wood and Miller? I don't see the point. They'll sign him to a one year deal worth about the same as he made in 2006, possibly a little less, but likely a shade more. He's not a free agent whom they need to entice to return. He is under their control, and their only obligation is to offer a contract no less than 80% (or similar) of what he made last year. Apologies all around. I thought he was a free agent after the 2007 season. He was called up too late in 2002 for that year to count, so the free agency clock started ticking in 2003. That's why he's not a free agent until after 2008.
  10. Here are Maris' career statistics. .260 career batting average, 275 home runs, and 851 RBIs. His worthiness for the Hall has been debated from time to time, but in my opinion, despite his numbers from 1960 through 1962, his overall numbers aren't good enough. And the fact that he's not in the Hall shows that the voters (both the writers and the Veterans Committee) agree. One record-setting season doesn't make a Hall of Famer.
  11. I'm quite certain the Veterans Committee can't either. If they could, I'm sure Shoeless Joe would be in by now. That's odd. I could have sworn that changed in 2005. Here's the list of players on the Veterans Committee ballot. It doesn't include Shoeless Joe. If he were eligible I'm sure he'd be on the ballot.

  13. He didn't sound too sure about this point, I'll admit. The exclusive rights to HD content should, however, concern anyone who isn't a DirecTV subsriber. Luckily I am... Exclusive rights to HD seems to be something that would be shot down by congress immediately. Exclusive rights to the sports packages should too. A person shouldn't have DirecTV as their only option if they want the sports packages. That seems to me too much like a monopoly. And I'm a DirecTV subscriber. I'm just afraid of what will happen to the cost if they're the only game in town for all the sports packages.
  14. Everybody has an account for getting and sending private messages; that's not a Premium feature. At the top of the page you should see a link that says something like "you have x new messages." Simply click on that link and you should then get your inbox, which will have all messages sent to you.
  15. One of the Sporting News columns at the time (Caught on the Fly, I believe) referred to him as Wrigleyman.
  16. He's their assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach. Prior to that, he was head coach in college at Wake Forest for several years, leading them to a rare winning record and bowl game in his next-to-last season there..
  17. In a long list of "wastes of talent". Brien Taylor, T. Van Poppell, Toe Nash, Josh Hamilton, etc, etc. While Van Poppel may not have lived up to the hype, it's not fair to lump him in with those other three. He pitched in the majors for 11 seasons, and while his career numbers aren't impressive, he did manage a couple of decent seasons with the Cubs. The other three haven't even come close to what he accomplished. Agreed. I'd group Van Poppel in with someone like Paul Wilson instead. Wilson was once the top prospect in the game, but never lived up to it because of injuries. He did at least turn out to be a serviceable punching bag for Kyle Farnsworth. Fixed.
  18. Moving day for this thread. Even though it's a baseball topic, since it's a poll it belongs in the polls forum.
  19. Unless the pitcher is Bob Walk. :D
  20. Fixed. :D
  21. I'm not sure, but I don't think it would count against the Yankees. I believe that the way such arrangements usually work is that the Yankees would send the Diamondbacks the money, and the Diamondbacks would then pay his full salary. In effect the Yankees would be paying a portion of the salary, but the Diamondbacks would actually be writing the checks.
  22. To answer my own question, yes it was Howard. Darr and a friend were killed; Howard was the only survivor in that car.
  23. Wasn't Howard the Padres' farmhand that was involved in the auto accident that killed Mike Darr?
  24. That had already been announced before Sandberg was named manager. Kevin Green will be the hitting coach and David Rosario the pitching coach, both moving up from Boise.
