  1. TCU is getting absolutely smoked by Baylor, 47-23 at the end of the 3rd.
  2. It is all relative. He is with the Red Sox now. No its not relative. You said the Cubs are tight with spending and they have the 6th biggest payroll in baseball, 3rd last year. Sorry if the Cubs didn't shell out an extra 20 mil during a period where ownership changed and inherited an extremely flawed and overpaid team. 20 mil probably wouldn't have made this team a playoff team so theres no point in adding more high priced and potentially disasterous contracts. Rickets did the right thing and invested the money in scouting and the draft. Epstein would love smart ownership like that, possibly because it reminds him of the team he's currently with and not the bumbling band of morons that have symbolized the cubs front office for several decades. His wording was flawed, but his point stands. Epstein has no motivation to jump ship. He has a situation that is already good. Everyone credits him with making it good, and while the Cubs' payroll is high the one he has now is higher than high. why leave? His wording wasn't really flawed at all. The point is, Epstein is going to be taking a downgrade if he leaves Boston, period. Now he may wish to leave to pursue another challenge (heck he did that already once), but his next gig isn't going to have all of the advantages he enjoys in Boston. It most certainly is flawed. He said that the Cubs are tight with money, and they most definitely are not. Just because they don't spend as much as the Red Sox doesn't make them tight.
  3. I believe this is scheduled to be his last minor league tuneup before being activated.
  4. It was mentioned in another thread where somebody (it may have been Raisin) posted the Cubs who made year-end minor league All-Star teams, but I think it deserves its own thread.
  5. Didn't Memphis just get like 10 guys suspended just today? I don't know, but five MSU players were suspended, including backup QB Dylan Favre (who has a rather famous uncle).
  6. I remember once upon a time when Jackson was considered to be a top prospect. Oops.
  7. Even if they did want to bring somebody up immediately (which there's no reason for) they'd probably wait until tomorrow since today's an off day.
  8. DeWitt actually played 3B, not 2B, for the Dodgers that year. I believe it was probably Casey Blake that you're thinking of who got injured. Jeff Kent was the 2B that year.
  9. The same organization that told someone they were being drafted and then didn't. Also the same org that verbally agreed to a trade but "forgot" to call the trade in. Interesting organization to say the least... Also the organization that once lost a prospective head coach because they announced his hiring prematurely, although that's going back several years.
  10. The playoffs go longer into September. That doesn't affect Iowa because they're in last place in their division.
  11. You should all tremble in fear of my team. I have TODD COLLINS!
  12. Cedric Benson has been sentenced to 20 days in jail. He will begin his sentence during the Bengals' bye week, and with early release may only miss one game. EDIT: Actually he may not miss ANY games. With the bye week he may only miss one or two practices.
  13. Thing is, there's close to a month left in the major league season after the minor league season ends. So if they want Cashner to pitch at all in September it has to be with the Cubs.
  14. You're not imagining things. I remember that too. The reason was to avoid giving playoff teams an unfair advantage when planning for the next year.
  15. No she's a red head. I wonder if it's RedIvy. Remember her? Wow I never thought about that. However based on my memory of her posts, it doesn't really match the personality of my neighbor, but you never know. If that's the case though, RedIvy probably still lurks here, and I will probably get an angry knock my door tonight from her. My suspicion at the time was that Arlene Gill herself was RedIvy, but that was just a guess, nothing confirmed.
  16. That's my recollection too. that's not my recollection at all. i mean, i think it's kind of a dick move to pick up FA that are actually playing right now if you're out of it, but i don't see why it shouldn't be allowed. and if someone drops someone you'd want to keep, i don't know why you shouldn't be able to. Because a non-playoff team picking up a player now could prevent a playoff team from doing so. That could be important if a playoff team loses a player due to injury. I definitely remember the ruling was what Tim said, although I'm not sure what thread it was in (or even if it was in an NSBB thread in the first place, as opposed to discussion in the Roadkill chat room). I also believe the EY Jr. issue was related to an extension of the rule stating that teams eliminated from the playoffs also can't pick up players. I believe that clarification was made after you picked up EY, then there was a poll about whether you should be able to keep the players you picked up before the rule was clarified. I voted that you should be allowed to, but the majority vote was no.
  17. That's my recollection too.
  18. Yeah. He's also been the Tigers' best pitcher since his rookie year. Verlander has been must see pitching for a long time now. The fastball and curveball combo has always been off the charts as an MLB pitcher, and he'd be a must watch even if he sucked. This is just him doing what he does as he's also entering his prime. I said a couple years ago that I expect him to get HOF talk when it's all said and done, and I think he'll make good on my bs. One of the most electric power SP arms we'll all ever see. Verlander + Upton in 2015! The 2015 team will be pretty awesome with those 2, Wilson, Fielder, Kemp, and 2 time MVP Starlin Castro. Maybe BTTF2 actually gets it right. :D
  19. That happened already. At least two hurricane-related deaths in North Carolina.
  20. While that's a more desirable list than mine, don't they usually favor guys who are already on the 40 man, which is why I chose Montanez and Maine? You also mentioned Snyder, though, and he isn't on the 40-man. He was outrighted earlier this year after his call-up.
  21. That exists. I don't have it, but I know it exists. People referred to it as the Horny Wagon.
  22. We should set up a separate thread for Adam's whining to avoid so many other threads being ruined.
  23. The Yankees hit three grand slams over the A's today in a 22-9 win (Cano, Martin, and Granderson). It's the first time in major league history that a team has hit three grand slams in a game. At one point the Yankees were actually losing 7-1.
  24. The league is full once again. Hopefully nobody else will bail out. As a reminder, the draft is scheduled for this coming Monday, Aug. 29 at 9:00 P.M. Eastern time (8:00 Central, etc.). I made a few tweaks to the scoring based on past comments (increased the passing yards per point, increased the return yards per point, added a penalty for pick 6 thrown). Tweaks can still be made if desired.
  25. I might be insane too, but I agree with you on this issue. I think the head-to-head format is more fun, but I think the tie-breaker procedures could be discussed for possibly changing next year.
