    I think abuck and I both wish Liriano would have started tomorrow instead of today. I have him in another league, but that's a strict weekly change league (no exceptions like we have), so I was unable to activate him for today's game. Had he waited one day he would have been a two-start pitcher next week. Nonetheless it looks like he's back.

    Actually the Cubs couldn't offer him arbitration in that case since they'd no longer hold his rights. But the effect is the same; it would be assumed that the Cubs would have offered him arbitration.[/nitpick]

    I prefer to go back to the Earl Cunningham era myself. I remember when Cubs fans were excited over drafting Ty Griffin and Cunningham in (I believe) consecutive years. Griffin was going to eventually be Sandberg's replacement. Oops.

    I remember his father, Joe Coleman Jr. (although he was simply known as Joe Coleman, without the Jr.). He began his major league career with the Senators (now Rangers) in the mid-60s, but his biggest success was with the Tigers in the early 70s. From 1971 through 1973 he won 20, 19, and 23 games. He pitched briefly for the Cubs late in his career (part of the 1976 season), going 2-8, 4.10 in 39 appearances (4 starts). Back then a 4.10 ERA was considered pretty bad (league average that year was 3.82); his ERA+ with the Cubs was 93.

    It won't matter. The chances the Cubs offer Edmonds arbitration are next to none. And I think even "next to" none is on the high side. There's no way they'll offer him arbitration; I think there would be a fairly high likelihood he'd accept it if offered.

    True, but they don't have to start him. They've already said he's welcome to return as Rodgers' backup. That pretty much puts the ball in Favre's court.

    I highly doubt it. Agreed; he hasn't pitched above Boise et; they certainly wouldn't call him up now, use a spot on the 40-man roster, and start the option clock ticking. Maybe if he signed a bit earlier and was liights out from the beginning.

    Action was rather hectic last week, however. I think some people may have simply thought of the start of the new week as the deadline so they could have their acquisitions active all week. Interestingly, in another league I'm in, fantasy baseball imitated real baseball. Jason Bay was traded in the fantasy league the same day he was traded in MLB (this trade didn't involve Manny, though).

    If he's set on returning to the Cubs and willing to give a hometown discount I don't think that would be much of a factor. Eh. If I'm him, I just can't let myself give a discount. This is his one chance to REALLY cash in. And he deserves it. He could give a discount and still be a very rich man. Getting top dollar isn't everything.

    If he's set on returning to the Cubs and willing to give a hometown discount I don't think that would be much of a factor.

    If he stays healthy I think he has a chance. The start of his career reminds me of Maddux in the sense that they were both above average, on the verge of stardom for a few years before finally having a big breakthrough year (1992 for Maddux, this year for Zambrano). Maddux kept building on that; if Z can do the same the sky's the limit.

    I actually liked the Cubs' chances against Sheets (with Z pitching) better than Sabathia (with Lilly pitching). Good thing we were both wrong.

    I'm actually hoping for Dempster to win the Cy Young Award over Zambrano this year. Z is just coming into his own and should have more chances in the future, while Dempster is having a career year that he may not repeat, so this may be his one and only chance. I'll take it if they finish 1-2 in either order, though.

    To be honest, I'm glad Hendry doesn't listen to alot of people on this board and really, any board. If he did you good say goodbye to Derosa Dempster Theriot Edmonds Lilly And even Z (at one point last year after the Barrett incident some posters were calling for him to be traded).

    It was mentioned on today's telecast that the problem isn't a blister, but rather an open wound with missing skin.
