  1. It's official now. Zambrano to the DL, retroactive to Aug. 2. Stevens back up and available for tonight's game. http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090808&content_id=6317988&vkey=news_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc
  2. I didn't take it as Zambrano refusing to pitch. I think he legitimately aggravated the back injury (perhaps on a batting practice swing, as mentioned in the article). I've always thought of Zambrano as somebody who WANTS to play.
  3. That's it, unless Lou decided to go with Samardzija instead of Marshall next time through.
  4. I'm sure the list would be released to teams (not made public) day by day, since not all players would be placed on waivers the same day.
  5. His table was already set (he's filling in for Lilly since Hart was traded). Someone else needs to fill in for Zambrano.
  6. I'm sure they would (although it would actually be Aug. 2 since he pitched Aug. 1). I can't think of any reason not to. By doing so he'd only need to miss one more start if he's ready by then.
  7. Not enough. We'd better be getting Wright as well.
  8. Actually it would be Sunday (the day after he last pitched). That would still mean he'd only have to miss one more start.
  9. Generally 10 days. However, if another player is placed on the DL a player can be brought back up in less than 10 days. A couple of times this year players were called up literally the very next day after being sent down (this happened with Scales and, if I recall, Stevens).
  10. It doesn't say what the Cubs got back in return; probably a PTBNL or cash. This may have been a move to make room on the Iowa roster for Hoffpauir.
  11. They could have placed him on the DL and still sent him to Iowa, calling it a rehabilitation assignment. Maybe they wanted the flexibility of being able to bring him back sooner if somebody else got injured.

    Week 18

It might come down to total points. If you win out and I win out except for our matchup we'd be tied in both head-to-head and division record, so total points would be the applicable tie-breaker. I was ahead of you at the end of last week, but you've surpassed me based on current points this week. It could wind up being very close.

    Week 18

Saunders and Smoltz have turned my matchup completely around. A couple of days ago I thought I was toast.
  14. Boston also DFA'ed Billy Traber. Not a good day for last night's pitchers.

    Week 18

The Red Sox DFA'd John Smoltz today. I'm sure Chuck and Adam both wish they'd done it one day earlier.
  16. Agreed. I think that's the best case scenario, not the worst.
  17. After his voting debacle at preseason QB, he probably forgot to vote all together. I believe USA Today told him not to do that anymore. Kinda sucks though, I always looked forward to "Other teams receiving votes - Duke (1)". I don't see what the harm was; it was something for people to talk about. It's not like a team getting one 25th place vote in the preseason poll has any effect on the BCS standings.
  18. I'm fairly sure Wagner is out for the year. He underwent TJS.
  19. Nothing wrong with speculating based on performance up to now as long as it's with the recognition that it's subject to change. It's just a fun exercise; it's not like Lou is going to set the post-season rotation based on premature speculation by fans on a message board.
  20. Once again Steve Spurrier didn't cast his pre-season vote for Duke like he used to. Looks like a tradition has died.
  21. Based on how they've been performing I think Dempster has to be odd man out (although my hunch is that Wells will be the one to be dropped due to lack of post-season experience). For neither the first nor last time what should happen and what will happen will probably be different.
  22. One of the best names I can remember was in one of the pick'em contests. Last year Rocket had an entry with a name that included ocho cinco percent accuracy. :-))
  23. There's got to be a photo of that out there somewhere. That'd be fascinating. I wonder how well an authentic 1973 Tony LaRussa Cubs throwback jersey would go over in Wrigley? I think it would be more like throwaway jersey. :D
  24. Not really clever, but I name my teams Monsters of the Midway. If one of my teams sucks I might change it to Meek Mice of the Midway during the season.
