  1. If he had 2 or 3 years remaining on his contract I could see somebody claiming him. With 5 years remaining the only way I could see it is if Hendry were to suddenly resign and immediately be hired as GM by another team.
  2. If Lou really has had enough and doesn't plan to return I'd rather he retire now. Then the Cubs could name Trammell as interim manager for the rest of this year and he'd have a month and a half to show his managerial style. Hendry (or, preferably, a new GM) would then decide in the off-season whether to retain Trammell or hire a new manager.
  3. I was a graduate student at UK then. They did get major sanctions (including a 2-year postseason and television ban). Reportedly the NCAA discussed the death penalty but didn't seriously consider it because UK cooperated and took what the NCAA considered to be appropriate action (firing both the AD and head coach). That's when C.M. Newton was hired as AD and Rick Pitino as coach.
  4. I probably wouldn't. There will still be many good players available at #3.
  5. have they won a game since he came off the DL? They're 4-10 since he returned (one win over the Rockies, two over the Pirates, and one over the Fathers).
  6. Correct. Forfeited wins turn into losses; vacated wins don't. Basically, it's as if the games were never played.
  7. I came into the season bitter about an atrocious off-season, and surprisingly my bitterness is even worse now. I didn't think that would be possible. Yeah I think most of us hated the offseason. I also think most of us thought we were good enough to get by it. We weren't. Yes. I think the general consensus was that they definitely wouldn't be as good as last year, but that they didn't have to be to still win the division.
  8. The Trib technically is still the owner. Similar to buying real estate, in the sense that, even after a sale agreement has been signed, the seller still owns the property until closing.
  9. 10 suggestions for the new owner.
  10. Good for you, Jim. So what are you going to do about it to make up for the fact that it will now be an intolerable 101 years without a championship? And what will yo do to prevent fans from having to sit through yet another rebuilding program before enjoying a title?

    Week 20

I'd much rather win a playoff spot outright, but the way my players (especially my pitchers) have quit on me the last couple of weeks it wouldn't surprise me at all if it came down to points.
  12. This definitely means the end of the Adrian Beltre era in Seattle now that they have the Best Third Baseman In Baseball.
  13. 40 years ago yesterday was Ken Holtzman's first no-hitter. They were discussing it on the telecast. The Cubs won 3-0 on a Ron Santo 3-run home run. He pitched another no-no for the Cubs in 1971.
  14. They absolutely have a chance. They're currently in 3rd place in their division, but only 1.5 games out of first. I'm not familiar with how wild cards work in the PCL (or even if they have them in the first place), so I'm not sure if that's another route to the playoffs.

    Week 20

And after an overnight adjustment to Feldman's score I'm negative after two days.

    Week 20

Total of exactly zero points for the week after two days. :banghead:
  17. No thanks; we'll pass on Wagner. Pitchers returning from TJS almost always struggle for awhile before regaining their effectiveness. There's no reason to expect him to be effective this year.

    Week 20

Sucking isn't a reason, but benching is. It's a matter of interpretation as to what constitures "benching" for a relief pitcher, and unless Juan says otherwise I'd interpret removing a relief pitcher from the closer role as the equivalent of "benching." If he says my interpretation is wrong I'll adjust accordingly and Juan can always adjust the scoring for any points a player may have accumulated while improperly in my lineup. And if Lou changes his mind and leaves Gregg as closer I will have played Russian Roulette and lost.

    Week 20

He can, but a position player can also get plate appearances without starting. Clearly a relief pitcher's potential for putting up points will be less when not in a closer's role. It's a question of interpretation on what constitutes the equivalent of benching for a relief pitcher. I'd think losing the closer job would qualify, but if Juan says otherwise I wouldn't object to leaving that RP position empty for the rest of the week. At least that would be preferable to getting more negative points from Gregg.
  20. Berg already was sent down. He went down to make room on the roster for Lilly.

    Week 20

Lou finally is replacing Gregg as closer, so I have to scramble. I've picked up both Marmol and Guzman until we know who the new closer is. For now I have Marmol in my lineup and Guzman on my bench, subject to change once it is known who is taking over. I believe we said that a change in status, such as being benched, is a reason for making mid-week lineup changes, and it seems to me like a pitcher losing the closer job fits in with that.
  22. Kevin Gregg's pitching arm would be a good thing for you to break.
  23. Positive outlook: I'm positive the outlook is bleak.
  24. There will actually be two weeks remaining, not one. This is week 20 and there are 22 weeks. That would still be big if I can increase my tie-breaker lead over him.
