  1. The umpires have been watching very little baseball too.
  2. The announcers seemed to blame both umpires on the Braves' play, but I don't blame the second base umpire. I think he called the runner out at second because, based on the home plate umpire's call, he thought the batter was out. The plate umpire, however, MUST be disciplined in some way. He clearly called a strike on the batter. EDIT: Yes, it was just strike 2, so it should have just been an out at 2B, not a double play.
  3. And don't forget about the bad call that got Lou tossed yesterday.
  4. North Dakota's playing Michigan? :D
  5. My pitching choices: Lohse vs. Cincinnati Jackson @ Boston Feldman @ Cleveland Marquis vs. Pittsburgh Washburn vs. Kansas City Harang vs. Washington Cook @ Florida Jackson vs. Kansas City Lohse vs. San Diego My initial inclination is to sit Lohse for his two starts since he's basically been putrid since returning from the DL. I'm definitely sitting him today (watch for a complete game shutout). Depending on what's reported about Cook this week (he's already been pushed back from Tuesday to Saturday because of a toe injury; he was originally slated for two starts this week) I could decide to use Lohse's second start instead.
  6. Lots of teams do this every year with lots and lots of players, partially just to gauge what kind of interest there is around the league in them. There may be more to it than that, and if so someone who knows more about the process can add on to this. But I know this happens quite a bit around baseball. Exactly. I've heard that a gigantic amount of players get placed on waivers, for the reasons that you just used. Just because a team puts a player on waivers doesn't mean that they want to trade or get rid of that player. Like Roast said, they're just trying to see the interest that other teams in the league have in that specific player. Another reason teams sometimes do it is to mask their true intentions. Maybe a team does want to trade a player, but to keep other teams guessing they'll place other players on waivers at the same time so it isn't obvious which player they want to trade.
  7. In hindsight Hendry obviously should have accepted that offer. But I wouldn't have done it at the time.

    Week 18

Same thing's happened to me recently. Two weeks ago I had the third highest score but lost by more than 140 because Don's team had a ridiculously unreal week. This week I have the 10th highest score but win. I had that one coming.

    Week 18

Unless Don's Yankees (Posada, Cano, and Rivera) combine for worse than -5.25 tonight he will have wrapped up the East. He will have clinched a tie (4 game lead with 4 weeks remaining) and be assured of winning a tie-breaker due to beating Todd twice.
  10. Not if he pitches the rest of the year the way he has for the most part up until today. I think a writer that feels inclined to vote for Wells would write off one bad start. If he continues pitching as he did today, then it would hurt him.
  11. I'm not giving up on the division, but I'd gladly take the wild card. Wild card teams have won the World Series several times.
  12. I'd love for Cano to be here, but I don't think the Yanks will trade him. But I agree, though. Put in the claim and see what happens. you cant "claim" players that have passed through waivers here's a link on the whole process You can put in a claim on him which gives the Yankees the option of withdrawing him, trying to arrange a trade with the claiming team, or just letting him go to the claiming team. I don't see any harm in making a claim to see what happens after that. I'm sure the Yankees would withdraw him or ask an outrageous package for him, but it wouldn't hurt (or cost anything) to try. The point people are making is that they can't claim him NOW (which is what this thread was suggesting) since he's already cleared waivers. That window has closed. They could have claimed him, but they didn't (nor did any other team).
  13. I definitely agree - I went to the first "Road to Wrigley" game a couple years ago and it was a great time (except for the torrential rain storm that came in the 9th inning). I would definitely watch it on TV. (The Zooperstars were hilarious, even for adults!) I definitely agree about the Zooperstars. I saw them last summer when the Southern League All-Star Game was played at Carolina. I think my favorite was Harry Canary's 7th inning stretch.
  14. I'd rather be rooting for Colorado to win to help the Cubs win the division. let's say that when the cards play the rockies the cubs are 4 games back of st louis for the division, but tied with colorado for the wild card. you'd still root for colorado? I'd root for whatever outcome makes it most likely for the Cubs to make the postseason, regardless of whether it's as division champion or wild card. If it means rooting for the Cardinals that to me seems similar to the idea of losing the battle to win the war.

    Waivers

I've never really understood how post-deadline waivers are supposed to work in this league anyway. This is my fifth year in the league and I don't recall any waiver trades after the deadline actually happening. I think Adam's suggestion would be easier to keep up with; if all of us placed our entire teams on waivers I think it would be very hard to keep up with.
  16. I've actually had all three Molinas on my keeper league team (no more than two of them at the same time, though).
  17. I think there would be a lot of interest among Cub fans if WGN were to televise the annual minor league game played at Wrigley. Let that be one of the days CSN televises the Cubs game.
  18. I don't look forward to it, but I think it's the least of the evils. Marshall can return to the pen where he's much more effective and Samardzija, even if he gets torched, can hopefully at least give enough innings to avoid burning out the bullpen.
  19. Not so much his last outing. True (although it wasn't really a bad start either; I'd call it so-so). On the whole, though, he's been much better since the break.
  20. I'd settle for the Cubs more or less conceding Wednesday, giving some players a day of rest, and taking 2 of 3.

    Week 18

He didn't have 7 starts on his roster to use; he would have needed to pick up another pitcher (maybe even two) to get 7 starts. His pitchers were scheduled for 6 starts, but he lost one when Braden was scratched from his start.
  22. I think so, but I'm not sure. I think all teams have the same time window to claim a player and, if more than one team claims the player, the team highest on the waiver order prevails. It would take forever if it went one team at a time (even if each team got only one day if it were one team at a time that would take nearly a month).
  23. Lately he's been healthy and effective. He's been very good since the All-Star break.
  24. Castillo has appealed the sentence and has been released from jail pending the appeal, which could take up to a year.
