  1. There's your RH power off the bench Vance. He needs regular work in order to try to be able to stay behind the plate. As a third catcher with no other position, he'd never see the field. He's not going to make the team. And if you think he's capable of becoming a ML-caliber catcher, I agree it's a bad idea. But if his ceiling is a backup catcher, it wouldn't be the worst thing in the world. I see him learning 1B or a corner OF spot if he doesn't make big strides with his defense this year.

  3. If Perez is chosen it's Pagan he'll be bumping from the 40-man.
  4. I'm not giving up on him, but I don't want him taking up a spot in the rotation if he can't consistantly hit 90 by the time ST is over. Put him on the DL so he can get more work in at Iowa until he gets back up to that. Agreed. No one should be giving up on Prior. It's still early. But you can't pencil him into the lineup when he's unable to get his curve anywhere near the strike zone and his velocity is off 4-5 MPH (and he's not spotting it well). I believe he'll get there, but perhaps not by the time they break camp. My guess is that the pecking order is: 1. Prior (but only if he shows a lot of improvement) 2. Miller (he needs to show a little more velocity and better command) 3. Guzman (the choice if the cuts were made today) 4. Cotts (emergency "Plan C' - he's been the long man from day one, capable of starting if none of the others showed they were ready) CFP
  5. http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/scoreboard/20070301.html The site is layed out poorly. Go to the scoreboard url (above) and click the "Audio" link at gametime.[/url]
  6. He's obviously not getting to several balls near the end of the video, but it's difficult judge what kind of jump he's getting without seeing the batter. I don't think we can conclude much from this.
  7. Close to public transportation is easy- anything downtown near Broad Street is a short subway ride to Citizens Park (Broad St. Line). I've had friends stay at the Marriott near city hall and at the Wyndam. Both are nice hotels, but like most downtown hotels, will run in the $150-250 a night range. Affordable is more of a challenge. If you're really looking to save money there's a Holiday Inn a short walk from the park (Packer Avenue, I think). I've never been in the place, but it looks like most any Holiday Inn. Chickie and Pete's (just west of the park) is a fun stop before the game. Citizen's is no Wrigley, but it's a nice park. Have fun! CFP
  8. RF: Jones/DeRosa (straight L/R platoon) CF: Soriano/Pagan or Theriot (Soriano gets 95% of the ABs) LF: Murton/Floyd (60/40 platoon) If Pie's ready by mid-season: RF: Pie/DeRosa CF: Soriano/Pie LF: Murton/Floyd Jones (dealt) and Pagan (DFA'd or dealt) 2008: RF: Soriano CF: Pie LF: Murton
  9. I'm absolutely on board with this. My love for the Cubs and my hatred for the Bears are inversely proportional! IMO there are only two Bears in history with any redeeming qualities: Singletary and Sweetness. The same goes for the Colts, it's Tony Dungy and then not much else to root for. For me this Super Bowl will be a lot like the last several Presidential elections. I know somebody has to win, but I'm not real happy about it. CFP
  10. This just isn't true. A single hole? Maybe. Over eighteen holes? Highly unlikely. Over a tournament? Never.
  11. Theriot for the first half, then Pie. Jones in an emergency.
  12. I'd deal (in order of preference): Eyre, Dempster, Ohman or Cotts to make room for Wood. But I think Hendry would option Wuertz to Iowa. Of course either scenario assumes Miller is not also DL'd. Guzman impressing in ST and Wood, Miller & Prior all being healthy would defintely make things interesting. A good interesting and something I hope happens. I see you sent down Cedeno. Does Izturis play SS for 162 games or do you think Theriot can fill in? This position really worries me. I think Cedeno making the 25-man is not out of the question - and fine with me if he replaces Pagan. I'd just prefer to see him have some success at Iowa- more incentive for the Cubs to forego Izturis' '08 option, or at least create some trade value for Cedeno. My preference would be: Three full time players (Lee, Soriano, Ramirez) Six 3/4 time players (Izturis/Jones/Barrett/DeRosa/Murton/Theriot) Izturis/Theriot SS Jones/DeRosa RF Murton/Floyd LF (not something I'd choose, but inevitable if Floyd is signed IMO) DeRosa/Theriot 2B Barrett/Blanco C I think the DeRosa/Jones platoon is a real possibility, but frankly I'd be surprised to see Theriot getting a quarter of the starts at SS.

  15. They might, considering they'll have $75 mil. committed to just six players. The Cubs have been in the running for the worst return on investment for the last couple of years: (millions per win) 2005 Yankees $2.19 (95) 2006 Yankees $2.01 (97) 2004 Yankees $1.82 (101) 2006 Cubs $1.44 (66) 2006 Red Sox $1.41 (86) 2004 Mets $1.36 (71) 2005 Red Sox $1.30 (95) 2004 Red Sox $1.30 (98) 2005 Mets $1.22 (89) 2005 Dodgers $1.20 (71) 2006 Angels $1.19 (89) 2006 Giants $1.18 (76) 2006 Dodgers $1.18 (88) 2005 Cubs $1.14 (79) 2006 Braves $1.14 (79) 2006 White Sox $1.14 (90) 2006 Astros $1.13 (82) ...Spend like the Red Sox & lose like the Royals. Hell of a model.
  16. Why is a partial list fishy? Does anyone think that Carroll claims to be looking at the actual lab results? If someone with access to the test results is leaking names of players who tested positive for steriods, it seems reasonable to me that that same person would leave off the names of players who tested positive for unrelated drugs or even the names of lesser known players.
  17. Hendry acquired Barrett the under-achiever. Barrett's OPS jumped 80-100 points with the Cubs. Hendry acquired Izturis the under-achiever. Therefore... Got it! Too bad nobody ever hyped Marquis. :(
  18. ?? I'm lost Dreaming that Drew/Boston negotiations have stalled, and Hendry will get Drew on a one year make good offer. "Dreaming" is the right word. But I figure if you're spending like a mad man, you might as well make the offense good while you're at it. Unfortunately, the Cubs spent $1.4 mil. per win last season. Let's see: $115 mil. / $1.4 mil. = 82 wins. Yeah, seems plausible... CFP
  19. Track Hendry's Fedex shipment of the $12 mil. 1-year "make good" contract to Boras' offices here: Memphis to LAX
  20. I just want to get a RH platoon partner for Jacque in CF and call the OF done. Yep. Heck, I'd still put Soriano in CF and get a guy like Craig Wilson to platoon in RF with Jones. I would love to see it, but I don't think Wilson is going tosign on to be a platoon player. I'm sure he will find a job being a starter. With the exception of 2004, Wilson has only ever been a platoon player. He doesn't seem to be drawing much attention. The Yankees have talked to him about coming back as a 1B backup/platoon partner. With Huff, Nixon, Floyd, Klesko, Nevin & Hillenbrand all still available, the market for 1B/corner OFs is soft. The Cubs could offer 300-400 or so ABs between RF and PH. Wilson would also have the opportunity to win the job outright if Jones is dealt or Murton falters. I'd do this in a hearbeat. Soriano's stint in CF can be temporary if he doesn't work out there or doesn't like the position, you shift him to RF once Pie is ready. btw- It'd also be nice to have an emergency catcher on the roster so that Barrett can be the primary RH pinch hitter on days when Blanco starts.
  21. I like it, but one change: SS DeRosa/Theriot/Izturis 1) Mark DeRosa is a 31-year-old career .260/.316/.366 hitter of right-handers, and on account of that absolutely should not even be considered for a full-time job 2) Mark DeRosa is has spent just 175 innings (or 20 full games) at shortstop over the last three years, and it's for good reasons Fair enough. But I wasn't advocating an everyday job for DeRosa. He gets the starts against LHers in RF, and roughly a third of the starts at shortstop until the question of who among DeRosa, Theriot, and Izturis is the best compromise of offense and defense is settled. btw- I think it's Theriot. He may hit for .150 higher OPS than Izturis while playing near-average defense at SS. If Hendry promised DeRosa the everyday job at 2B he's a fool. Sure DeRosa probably expects first crack at it, but if Giles is signed, tough. DeRosa would still get 350-400 ABs and his paycheck. Let him demand a trade if he can't live with that.
  22. Craig Wilson/J Jones platoon in right. Dump Jones at the deadline, call up Pie. Shift Soriano to RF in 2008. All set.
  23. I don't think Church is enough of an upgrade to be worth the price in prospects. Unless the Cubs are going for Vernon Wells, I'd stand pat in the outfield. I wouldn't sign Floyd either. As others have stated, Jones=Wells against RH pitching. I'd like to see Lou move Theriot around SS/2B/CF. He could pick up 150 or more ABs in a CF platoon role. Bring Pie up when he's ready and either deal Jones then or platoon Pie in LF with Murton. Concentrate on upgrading SS. That's the real offensive black hole.
  24. It is a mistake on the web site. Burelll has two years left on his contract.
