  1. No, Ramirez isn't one. He never filed the paper work.. The offices of MLB are open M-F. He may have missed the exculsive deadline, but never filed. so, we still can sign 3 more. Free agency isn't automatic, you must file. Ramierez filed a few days after the filing period opened. At least a week ago. Ramirez files
  2. How do you figure? This should be interesting. Vance? The CBA specifies a quota of A/B Free Agent signings. The quota is determined by the number of ABs available. Each team's quota is the GREATER of four or the number of Type A/B free agents they lose this offseason. The Cubs quota is four. Signing ARAM would not have counted against the Cubs' limit had they signed him during the exclusive negotiating period. It appears that the signing actually took place on Sunday and the signing counts as an A/B. DeRosa is a type B FA and also counts: 4- ARAM - DEROSA means the Cubs can sign only 2 TYPE A or TYPE B FAs this year. So you can scratch any Drew/Padilla/Lilly type scenarios. Another reason this move stinks.
  3. God awful move. If there was any position the Cubs could fill cheaply it was 2B. I have a hard time imagining any strategy that makes paying DeRosa 4.33 mil for three years a good move. Does Hendry have NO confidence in Theriot, Fontenot AND Patterson??? Once again Hendry works the problem backwards.
  4. Still doesn't make sense why Boston spends $148 million and the Cubs $100. The average ticket price at Fenway is over $45 (2004 numbers). That's at least $10 higher than the average at Wrigley. Multiply the numbers by their attendence and you have most of the difference.
  5. I don't understand the point of identifying a "#2". That's not a terrible rotation (without Prior factored in). It's a deeper and better rotation than most teams have. The point is to outscore your opponent. So if you can't upgrade the rotation significantly, you turn to the offense. With that said I still think the Cubs make a push for Schmidt and/or Zito.
  6. No. If the total number of A/Bs you lose is greater than the A/B quota (4 this year), you get to replace the number you lost. The Cubs can only lose one at this point (Pierre). So their quota is four As or Bs. Ramirez couints against the quota if he was signed after the deadline. It appears this is the case, but I haven't read anything definitive.
  7. Soriano already turned down 5/70 from the Nats. I doubt he has any interest in this deal. Drew is a much better value.
  8. The CBA doesn't distinguish between Type As and Type Bs for purposes of the quota. The Cubs can sign either three or four Type As (depending on whether ARAMs deal was agreed to before the deadline).
  9. Premium Regular *Though the conclusion that the quota would be three appears to be wrong. It looks like it's four this year, and if ARAM signed after the exclusive window closed he counts against that total. So it looks to me like the Cubs can sign THREE more A/B free agents. Also, signings throught the posting system apparently don't count.
  10. Good grief. I'm so tired of this team! Ok, this is off the wall, but: Zambrano 6/65 (20, 11, 11, 11, 11, 11) Barrett 4/30 (15, 5, 5, 5) Drew 4/50 (14, 9, 9, 9, 9) Catalanotto 3/15 (7, 4, 4) Schmidt 4/48 (18, 10, 10, 10) Trade: Izturis, Jones, Dempster (eating $5 mil. total) So we've spent the $115 mil. and the club actually has a shot at being good in a year or two. (They'd have $35 mil.+ to spend next off season to fill holes.) Theriot/Cedeno -SS Murton/Catalanotto -LF Lee -1B Drew -RF Moore/Coats -3B Patterson/Fontenot -2B Barrett/Soto -C Pie -CF Zambrano Schmidt Hill Prior/Miller Marshall/Guzman/Marmol/Mateo/Gallagher I'd be much happier with that than what's likely to happen. CFP
  11. Midnight EST, I'm guessing. The window doesn't exactly close tonight. It just gets harder, more expensive, and if he's re-signed after tonight it counts against the FA quota. So the Cubs would lose their pick to the Cubs? They wouldn't lose a compensation pick to themselves (obviously), but after tonight the signing counts against their limit (4 Type A/Bs) this year.
  12. Teahen, unlike Nomar and Durham, is at least going into his prime. So, I like that move better. But do you think Hendry would go in that direction? I don't. If Hendry doesn't sign Ramirez he has to steal someone like A-Rod or Tejada (and I don't see either of those happening). If he can't afford ARAM he can't afford Soriano. So, at best, it's another round of over-the-hill, fragile, or washed up FAs.
  13. So what to you do next if you're Hendry and you can't sign ARAM? (Suicide is not an option.) Sign Drew, Durham, & Nomar or DeRosa (platoon with Moore at 3b?). That'd leave room to sign only one other FA- presumably a starter. The other starter, a platoon partner for Jones, any other offensive upgrade, and the entire bench would have to come: 1) via trade; 2) Japan/or other foreign signing; 3) off the Type C/D FA scrap heap; and 4) the Farm. Not many good choices left if this doesn't get done. VORP 3B Ramirez 44.5 Garciaparra? 27.6 DeRosa 21.9 Ensberg 19.0 Huff 9.4 OF Soriano 48.2 Drew 34.9 C. Lee 27.2 Lofton 26.1 Roberts 22.2 Pierre 18.0 2B Durham 47.9 Giles 14.5 Kennedy 10.9

  15. Well said. That's exactly the posture I'd take.
  16. Prior + Miller = one spot filled IMO.
  17. Good move if it's for an appropriate amount of money.
  18. Either 5/75 is completely off base or JH is a complete moron. I've no idea which is the case here.
  19. What leverage does he have now? The only leverage Hendry has is the threat that he'll withdraw his offer. I'll admit, it's weak leverage considering Hendry's position, but you can't let the negotiations go on forever while other potential candidates are signed by other teams. After Saturday Ramirez becomes an auction process. Well, if you were Aram's agent, what would you advise him to do? I'd tell him to pass on the Cubs' offer and play the FA market. Unless I thought: 1) there was a chance it was the best offer he'd get; and 2) the Cubs threatened to withdraw it if the deadline passed. But if Ramirez is at all serious about wanting to stay in Chicago it might not have to be the best possible offer- only in the neighborhood of what Soriano is looking for.
  20. What leverage does he have now? The only leverage Hendry has is the threat that he'll withdraw his offer. 21. 6/92 is the highest I'd go assuming: 1) No NTC (or only a very limited clause); and 2) the sixth year is an option that doesn't vest if he's injured any significant time during the first five years. 14, 15, 15, 16, 16, 16 (4 mil. buyout on the last year - vests with an avg. of 500 PAs)
  22. I think Hendry has to make his last-best offer by Saturday and move on if Ramirez doesn't bite. If he doesn't he loses all leverage in negotiations.
  23. Organizational meetings are going on right now. If the deal doesn't happen by Saturday, Ramirez is free to negotiate with other teams AND a resigning counts against the Cubs' quota of A/B signings. If ARAM isn't signed by Saturday night, there's little chance he will be signed IMO.
  24. I caught the tail-end of his interview. Boras said we may not know until tommorow who won the bid Edit: He did make it seem like we'd know for sure by tommorow at the latest. Depends on how fast Seibu acts (they have until the 14th to decide), when they come to work (it's 7:14 tomorrow morning there now), and how late the MLB folks work. :)
