  1. So I take it there won't be any "Aaron Miles Appreciation Threads" anytime soon?
  2. If you watched Pete Rose play you wouldn't have to ask that question. Nobody would have questioned Pete Rose on betting on baseball as a player....it was when he was a manager he disrespected the game. Pete Rose, aka Charlie Hustle, is a HOF regardless of what Pete Rose, aka the Gambler did as a manager.
  3. Unless Rose betted on baseball as a player, it shouldn't matter what he did as manager. Don't allow him to work in baseball, or make money from baseball, but don't make light of what he did as a player. Yes he's scum (or so was Ty Cobb among others), but being a scum doesn't make him any less of a great ballplayer. The HOF is already a joke with at least 10 to 15 players (if not more) in the HOF is are not legit HOFers, so keeping Pete Rose and for that matter Shoeless Joe Jackson out of the HOF continues to make the HOF illegitimate and a fraud.
  4. Grand slam, eh? Switch over from watching Big Show and Shaq have an impromptu sumo wrestling match, and Soriano boom--goes--the--dynamite the pitch.
  5. And he always, always pitches like an ace against the Cubs. Hope Zambrano brings his good stuff. Maybe in Houston, but Wandy Rodriguez historically have pitched very badly (era over 8 and a whip a little south of 2) at Wrigley. Not to mention he isn't the same pitcher during night games (4.70/1.41) as he is during day games(3.71/1.29) or the same pitcher on the road (5.22/1.50) as he is at home (3.77/1.27) during his career and the Cubs are hitting a robust 340/.395/.547/.942 against WRod in 5 career starts at Wrigley. I mean, I would be a bit annoyed if the Cubs don't rough up WRod on Monday. But seeing how the season has gone, nothing would surprise me.
  6. Traditional cricket can be a bit tiresome, and an American audience just wouldn't deal with it well. Twenty20, while still longer than a baseball game, could certainly appeal to the same kind of people baseball appeals to. I was in Australia earlier this year, and they're crazy about cricket there. It's really a fun game to watch. I don't know if Americans will ever "be ready" for cricket. Hell, right now soccer/futbol is hit and miss with Americans, so I definately see cricket flopping.
  7. Stoney's is just mad that his ego just took a hit. He's mad that Bruce all but female dog slapped Stoney and his "sources" and he's trying to prove he's right by pulling a Mark Buehrle. Plus it can't be good for one's pride to have to work for the White Sox who lead the league is biggest tools in baseball.
  8. I just love the matchup in the Atlanta/Milwaukee game. Both teams were paying tribute to two Negro League teams, the Milwaukee Bears and the Atlanta Black Crackers (later the Crackers). You can't make this crap up. Seeing a team in Milwaukee (or Wisconsin for that matter) wearing a "Bears" jersey was weirdly amusing.
  9. This is simply negotiation ploy. The Jays have to ask for the moon as their opening offer. I'm thinking Donald/Drabek/Carraso and/or 4th prospect should be enough to get a deal done.
  10. Heilman is doing his best impression of a BP pitcher. Good job Heilman you nail that part.
  11. .279/.324/.359/.683 Those are Pierre's numbers at Wrigley the past three yrs. Suffice to say power is nowhere to be found with Pierre no matter the stadium.
  12. WHAT They both give you the all Moises Alou caliber defense in RF, maybe MB is slightly better, but Dunn's bat more then makes up for it.
  13. oh please. My retort would be.....and Milton Bradley is? That seems to be an excuse for not trading for Dunn, instead of a rational reason. If they don't like his defense, just admit it but don't use some crock excuse that Dunn isn't a "winning type of player", cause you don't know seeing as he has played for a crappy Cincy tean, an underachieving D'backs, and Super Crappy Nationals team in his career.
  14. Unlikely unless they pick up a lefty reliever in the next couple of days.
  15. As much as a fan of the signing MB I was, this would please me very much. Defensively they'll give you about the same, but offensively it would be an appropiate answer to the Cards getting Holliday.
  16. 2009 Joel Piniero is the kind of Joel Piniero Seattle was hopng for when he was one of their top prospects. But was not-so-funny funny is that Joel Piniero fits the build of the kind of pitcher that Duncan/LaRussa has gotten in St. Louis. His stats--in less yrs, tho--reminds me of a young Jeff Suppan. Someone who will beat the strike zone but will strike out less then a batter an inning, but won't walk anybody either. Not to mention some of his best comparasions through his age 29 season are either former Cards or current Cards and that list includes: Jason Marquis, Todd Stottlemyre, Kyle Lohse, and Chris Carpenter (yeah, ). Dexter it does seem to be flukish, but that has been the MO of Duncan/LaRussa era in St. Louis. Which means at some point they'll prolly sign a guy like Adam Eaton (perfect reclamation project for them) and turn him into a serviceable pitcher again. Some crap different yr. I don't like it bother me anymore.
  17. I'm not downplaying the significance the acquisition of Holliday has meant for the Cards, BUT I am also not shaking in the boots just because the Cards acquired Holliday. And I'm pretty sure the Cubs players are not saying, "Omigod the Cards got Holliday, we must quit because we have no shot now." Cubs fans keep saying it, and praying it finally comes true, but I actually like the Cubs starting lineup. If Soriano, Bradley, and Fontenot continue to build off what they have done the last week or so, I take the Cubs offense as a WHOLE over the Cardinals anyday. Nonetheless this should be a fun battle to the end.
  18. Yikes.....If I was the Phillies I would Drabek OR Happ, but not both.
  19. Maybe, maybe not. But unless the Phillies get better production from Hamels (4.66 era--1.33 whip--.287baa), Moyer ( 5.65 ERA---1.44 whip---.296 baa), and Blanton (4.24era---1.33whip---.265baa) the Phillies will definately be beatable even with Halladay.
  20. Having Sanchez at 2B, and move Fontenot to the bench, improves not only the starting lineup but the bench as a whole. Now while not a huge difference maker, but it would improve two areas.
  21. Again I realize Walker was good for the Cards when he was in the lineup. And yes if the Cards didn't "Pull a Cub" in the 2004 World Series, the Walker trade would had been viewed as a "over the top" move. But they didn't, thus as great of the move it was, it didn't put them over. Holliday may put them over (coincidentally, both Holliday and Walker both played on teams that were utterly destroyed by the BoSox in the World Series) but if I was a betting man, I would bet against the Cards.
  22. "Over the top" means winning a World Championship. Getting to the World Series means "reaching the top."
  23. Er, Larry Walker played excellently for the Cardinals and was a key part in the 2004 NL Champions. He was very good in 2005 too. Not sure why you're making that comparison to try and discredit St. Louis. I was realize he was good for the Cards but he didn't put them over the top, just merely got them to the opportunity to get over the top. I meant no slap at Walker or what he did for the Cards. And I know Holliday+DeRosa could very well very good things for the Cards, but I would be more fearful of the Cards if they got a legit good pitcher to pitch behind Carp/Wainwright.
  24. Considering the fact Holliday is barely an .800 OPS guy outside of Coors Field in his career, I don't see the big deal about Holliday. Personally looking at his numbers, Holliday is being really overrated. I mean there was a 3 year period in which he scored an .973, 1.012, and .947 OPS, but the other three years he was a mid .800 OPS guy. So this makes the Cards a legit threat to reach the playoffs, but by no means do this make them a lock. Not to mention they should change how teams should pitch to Pujols. Albert should not have an official at-bat after the fifth innings of any game unless the game is out of hand. This is a nice move for the Cards, but like another former Rockies OFer they acquire (Walker), Holliday is unlikely to "push them over the hill." But maybe this is kind of move to makes Hendry move with a little more urgency.
