  1. Wuertz was really good last year and has been terrible this year. Certainly not a good move, but it's a blip on the radar.
  2. As others have said, it's about cost savings going forward. Z has declining velocity and will turn 30 next year with tons of wear on his arm. We all love the guy, but he's not likely to be a sub-4 ERA pitcher from here on out. The financial flexibility would make a big difference in the next four years. Even the proposed Perez-Castillo deal is tempting to me. Realistically, the Cubs aren't going to compete in 2011, but if they're smart (yeah, yeah) they could set themselves up nicely for 2012. The young players would have time to develop and the money from Perez, Castillo, Aramis, Silva and Fukudome would come off the books next fall, which is about $60 million. That would let them make a run at Adrian Gonzalez or Prince Fielder, plus some other quality free agents.
  3. Jesus, that's even worse. If they traded Z for just Perez, without throwing in any money? I think I'd take that. And for all the times people here have flipped out in recent years about the Cubs trading a player away (Sosa, DeRosa, Bradley, Jose Ceda, Will Ohman), have any of them really come back to hurt them? Sosa for Fontenot was a fine deal, because Sosa was totally done and Fontenot has contributed some. DeRosa brought a nice return. Bradley has been a disaster for Seattle and Silva has been pretty good. Jose Ceda hasn't done a thing in Florida. Will Ohman, meh. I think the two worst trades Hendry has made are Juan Pierre (obviously) and Angel Pagan (no one saw that coming). Far more often than not, the Cubs do well on the trade market. Edit- The Greg Maddux trade sucked, too. Forgot about that. I'm not necessarily saying that this makes trading Z for nothing a good idea, but the constant cries of "HERE WE GO AGAIN TIME TO MAKE YET ANOTHER TERRIBLE TRADE LIKE ALWAYS" ring pretty empty.
  4. Kenny Williams is insane but he's always fun to watch around the deadline. He's got balls, that's for sure.
  5. So, even when you neutralize for luck, he still wasn't very good. Yeah, no one's saying that Vitters woulda torn apart the Southern League if it weren't for that darn misfortune. But an .800 OPS in AA as a 20 year old is nothing to be disappointed in either. Only 14 qualified hitters in the Southern League have an OPS greater than .800 right now. Right. I wouldn't say I'm disappointed in Vitters, but I'm having a hard time getting excited about him. I'm still pretty confident he'll reach the majors, but he's not showing too many signs of being an impact player. Maybe my hopes were too high after his hot stretch in Peoria last year.

  7. But why? This isn't like basketball where horrible bad can lead to an amazing draft pick that can help immediately start turning your team around. Yeah, the higher pick is nice, but steering a baseball team to be "horrible bad" is a horrible plan. It just mires the team in crap for years to come, which heavily impacts revenue and further impedes efforts to improve the team. Draft picks are too much of a gamble to expressly "go for horrible bad." Completely agree with this. The MLB Draft is by far the biggest crapshoot of pro drafts, so it makes little sense to tank simply in hopes of moving from pick 15 to pick 7 or whatever. Plus, draft boards vary so much from team to team, you might end up getting the guy you want anyway, even at a lower slot.
  8. And if you take out all the games where he had a QB rating above 80, he was REALLY terrible.
  9. If Zambrano ends up being as useless post-trade as Sosa was, I don't really care.
  10. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xo3mvfIy5Lg
  11. Could this have been the best the DBacks could do for him? If that's the best you can do for Dan Haren, just keep him.
  12. Valentine has won 51% of his games and exactly 1 pennant; why do people think he's such a great manager? http://scratchbomb.com/images/bobby%2Bvalentine.jpg
  13. Boggs once hit 45 doubles in a year to go along with a .476 OBP. He was still hitting the ball hard.
  14. When I hear it, I think about all those poor morons who walk up to the plate with scuba gear on, hit the ball with their kayak paddles and then run into center field before collapsing to the ground. I wish they'd stop playing the game wrong. Is that supposed to be funny? No.

  16. Well, now I'm already pissed off.
  17. Clearly Ryno was groomed for the role by Hendry and if he goes then there is no guaranty that Ryno is the next manager. Is Sandberg as terrible as everyone seems to think? He could be. I just know he has said things about sacrifice bunts in the past and everyone subsequently hated him, but does anyone have actual insights on his managerial style? Just wondering. if you want to like sandberg, you can, you're just going to have to ignore everything he's written and everything he's done as a minor league manager. i'm not being sarcastic. if you're fine doing that, then, sure, there's nothing in his past to dislike. of course, if you do that, there's also just nothing in his past. That's fine. I'm already inclined to dislike him, but just wanted to detail on what he's actually done as a manager. Do his teams sacrifice bunt way more than other minor league teams? Does he overwork pitchers? Do his teams run into a lot of outs?

  19. Agreed. They gave up a good prospect, but they're going for it this year. Lee gives them a legitimate shot at winning the World Series. Good for them.
  20. Redick actually is pretty decent on the defensive end. I know he'll always have that sissy white guy stigma from his college days, but by most accounts he's worked hard to get stronger and better on defense. Orlando was actually using him as a defensive sub late in the year.
  21. Except for the whole screwing-over-of-Seattle thing. Say what you will about LeBron and Cleveland, but at least Cleveland still has a franchise in town.
  22. I hope so. That was awesome. Just stop.
  23. As much as we'd all like to hope the Heat fail, I don't see it happening. This is how I see the East shaking out: 1. Heat - 64 wins 2. Magic - 58 wins 3. Bulls - 55 wins 4. Hawks - 52 wins 5. Bucks - 48 wins 6. Bobcats - 44 wins 7. Nets - 40 wins 8. Cavs - 38 wins Blatant attempt to get me to respond? I'm not sure what you mean. Oops, sorry. I get it now. Leaving the Celtics off was a total oversight on my part. Put them in where the Nets are.
