  1. Obviously they will have zero interest in those guys. That's not the point. Teams often take back other team's problems they have zero interest in to fascilitate a trade. There isn't exactly a huge market for Griffey, and if he's truly limiting his potential destinations, Cincy is going to have to be flexible if they are going to make any sort of deal. If they are interested in trading Griffey for prospects, I'm sure they consider trading Griffey for prospects plus a bad contract. And with Jones at least having some power potential, I would think they would entertain the idea of bringing him to GABP. I may be reading the situation wrong, but I don't think the Reds fell that they HAVE to trade Griffey. If they don't see something that works for them, I think the will hold onto him. It isn't like he's demanding a trade or anything.
  2. The Reds aren't going to give Griffey away. They also are going to have zero interest in one of the Cubs problems, either Jones, Eyre, or Izturis. The Reds will want what any team wants, young prospects. I think any deal the Reds would entertain would have to include some combination of guys like Gallagher, Veal, Huseby, Patterson, Pie, etc.
  3. Shea's supposedly a Todd Walker-esque clubhouse cancer. Already have Izturis and Jones complaining about PT - don't need another whiner. Hoops I'm in agreement. Yesterday was just a slow day and I was looking for things to talk about.
  4. I predict Pujols will open the second half like a madman. Hitting about 10 homeruns in 15 games. LaRussa will then be applauded for his motivational skills.
  5. I also question that Sosa would have 40+ corked bats. But, in all honesty, do you really think Sosa only had one corked bat? Also, do you really think it was for BP only and he "accidentally" used it? I only bring this up to try and make the point that it is very possible Sosa had some other bats that needed to be disposed of. Again, 40+, that would be a lot, but its very reasonable to assume he had more than one.
  6. Dmitri Young was by far the friendliest baseball player I ever had the pleasure of being around as a kid when he came up through the St. Louis organization. I'm very happy for him with how he has come back this year and put some of his troubles behind him.
  7. Whoever signs him will only be responsible for the prorated minimum.
  8. I would think Barney would be a guy that could move pretty quickly through the system. He's limited in areas, and obvioulsy doesn't have anything close to star potential, but is probably pretty close to being a finished product.
  9. Haha, yeah, okay. Aside from the obvious fact that that's a LOT a of bats, I doubt MLB would call and say "hey guys, we're gonna come make sure you're not doing anything illegal...so get rid of all the illegal stuff now please" They actually do give a warning like that. I've seen it with my own eyes when it occured during a AAA game. After the call, guys started to scramble quite a bit.
  10. Its not hard to believe that Sosa didn't have more than one of those things. Just for batting practice of course....
  11. Officially released and put on waivers by Anaheim. Sports a career .297/.335/.457 against Left-handed pitching. Only problem is, he has only played 1B or 3B during his career. That doesn't leave many options with the Cubs. He was also apparently upset about playing time with Anaheim, so the Cubs probably wouldn't be an attractive option to him. But hey, he could help against LH pitching! Too bad he can't catch...
  12. They realize Murton is sitting in AAA right now, right? But you're not likely to get great numbers from anyone that doesn't get consistent playing time. Exactly. I want to feel excited about the possibility of Murton (and maybe Soto or Cedeno) getting the call, but honestly we all know what'll happen if they do. Arrive at Wrigley, wait 3 days before getting a start, going 0/4 with 2 Ks, banished to the bench for spot duty for a 2-3 week period before being sent down again. Newsflash, Baker isn't here anymore. I think Lou has been good about playing guys that have just been brought up. Also, I think he has shown the willingness to play those who produce, or who have earned more playing time. You are free to think what you like. It's America. I love the idea of earning playing time as if there should be a 1:1 correspondence from each AB to the amount of time one gets to play. Huh? I'm just trying to compare what I've seen between Lou and Dusty. I don't think you would have seen Fontenot get a chance to succeed under Dusty. Lou put him out there and was even willing to try him out of position in order to get him in the lineup.

  14. Why would the Phillies do that deal? Rumor has it that they are really trying to dump Burrell. This gets him out of there and saves them some money. They may or may not do it, but sometimes to get rid of an onerous contract, you take back some onerous contracts. (See Hundley for Gruz/Karros) Being desperate to dump Burrell and actually making that deal are two differnt things. I can't think of a team that would need Izturis any less than Philly.
  15. Why would the Phillies do that deal? You beat me to it.
  16. The Cubs are too shortsighted. They think they need a HR hitter and appearently when Murton plays in RF he forgets how to play baseball (at least according to some). Murton also seems to have gotten into the doghouse with Lou for having the termidity to disagree with Lou on whether he changed his batting "mechanics". What was that about? I honestly haven't heard that before.
  17. Good. Does that basically mean Murton or Cedeno..possibly Soto?
  18. Does anyone think there is a possibillity that Hendry is talking to Atlanta about Andruw Jones? He's going to be a FA and he's really having a down year. Who knows, maybe Atlanta just wants to get what they can for him. Or they might want to keep him and try to resign him because they might be able to get him cheaper based on his down numbers this year. just a thought...
  19. Most patient...hitter...ever. His BA sucks and his fielding is crap, but man can that guy take a walk. Plus his power always seems to pick up in the second half, and he's been on the trading back on a seemingly annual basis. Maybe getting out of Philly would be good for his psyche as well, a la Scotty Rolen. I agree that having the ability to take a walk is a positive thing, but I'd like them to have other skills as well. If that is your only skill, you won't get very far. He does have power, but this year has been a very big struggle for him. I don't think picking up Burrell would do all that much. The artcile never mentions that a trade is in the works. I think its quite possible the RH bat could very well be Cedeno or Murton.
  20. You're certainly asking the right questions. Homeruns (except for the inside-the-park variety) are not balls in play, so homeruns don't count against defensive efficiency. Hits do count against the defense. Why? Because the evidence shows that pitchers have very little (if any) influence on whether a ball in play becomes a hit or not. http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/another-look-at-dips1/ 4 of the Cubs starting pitchers are in the top 40 in BABIP (batting average of balls in play) so far this season (min 75 innings pitched): 6. Jason Marquis 8. Rich Hill 21. Ted Lilly 29. Carlos Zambrano yeah my bad, I realized my mistake of asking about HR's right after I submitted that last post. I think hose numbers have some value, but I still don't but into it 100% in the conclusion that Pittsburgh's defense is in the bottom 3 of the league.
  21. Kroeger intrigues me. Its obvious he has talent, but his previous performance leaves a lot to be desired. Off-topic, I'll be seeing former farmhand Jon Connolly throw tomorrow for Toledo.
