Unless they have a deal in place for Dempster or Garza, I don't see why we'd still be willing to give possibly $10 mil to another back-end starter when we just acquired two of them in trades.

I love when trades just come out of nowhere like this. I was a big Cashner fan (and the Cashner bobblehead on my desk at work will make me a bit sad). But Rizzo is our first baseman of the future and is a stellar talent. When you can get a potential star first baseman for a relief pitcher, you have to jump on that. I also like the potential Cates has, too. Good trade.

Oh for eff's sake. I'll hold judgement til the facts come out but this blows. -
I mean, probably in two years when Howard can't do anything but hit homers, Rollins declines even more rapidly and Utley's knees become Jello. They've emptied most of their system and aren't set up to compete in a couple years unless they keep spending money. This year, they'll finish ahead of the Nats,they did well last year without much of an offense and they'll do it again.

I'm meh on this trade. Volstad was at one point a top draft pick and decent prospect. He's still fairly young so maybe he just hasn't broken out yet. Also, weren't there rumblings that Matt Dominguez was being included in the trade too or did that not pan out?

Gonna pull a B2B move here for the first time, so just stay with me. Cubs get: Rizzo, Turner, Smyly Tigers get: Garza, Byrd Padres get: Porcello, Tigers prospect Cubs get their first baseman and two high upside starters. Tigers get Garza and some outfield insurance. Padres get a starter they could plug into their rotation to make up somewhat for the loss of Latos. And playing in Petco could help his numbers. Laugh away.

Good trade by the Sox, especially since Sweeney is kinda underrated. If that's all it took to get Bailey, it somewhat dampens my hopes in a Marmol trade.

Meh. I really don't know what they have left in their system and have emptied most of it out. I'm sure we could get a way better package from the Yanks, Jays or Tigers.

Back home, he is compared to Dustin Pedroia, the similar-in-size Boston Red Sox All-Star second baseman — and nobody laughs. In fact, scouts do not think Torreyes’s stature will hinder his rise to the major leagues and, incredibly, nobody with a trained eye seems to put it past him to make a name for himself at the highest level. I would definitely take that. As much as I hated to see Marshall go, I love this trade in our favor.

Sappelt is a 24 year old outfielder in AAA who debuted last season. Not sure why we need him though. Torreyes seems very intriguing. A middle infielder who is ust 19 and has a .935 OPS over two seasons in the minors. Sappelt actually makes the Reed Johnson signing more confusing and pointless. I'd rather just give Sappelt a chance as the 4th/5th OF this season than waste it on Reed. Yeah, agreed. Unless we're flipping him somewhere else as part of another deal.

Meh. He could make for a nice buy-low candidate. I'm sure the dollar amount isn't much. We may have been better off with someone already in the system getting a bullpen spot, but I'll give the front office the benefit of the doubt for now. If it makes anyone feel better, Hendry probably would've given Corpas a three-year $15 mil deal with a NTC.

What is it that makes you think Johnson will be a better player in 2012 than Campana? I have more faith in him putting up an OPS north of .750. Campana just strikes me as a poor man's Reggie Willits, but without the walks and worse defense.

Man I hate to give up Marshall, he's been one of my favorite Cubs the past few years. Getting Hamilton as one of the prospects would be sweet, but how is Travis Wood any different than Randy Wells, aside from age?

What's the big effin deal? I know he's not great. Theo knows he's not great. But he's a good bench bat/4th outfielder and that's all he'll be. It's a cheap, one year deal. I personally wouldn't want Campana as our 4th outfielder next year.

I would love to have something from the Tigers farm system. Buying low on Porcello would be great and I like Turner. I wonder if Theo and Jed were waiting out on a Garza trade to see how the market played out. After the Latos trade, we should be able to get a nice haul.

Yeah we aren't going to be good. I would think the Garza to Rangers talks will heat up if the Jays did indeed win the bidding on Darvish. Losing Garza and going with someone like Scott/Lahair/Loney at 1B would put us in top 3 pick territory in the 2013 draft. i'm trying to think of two worse teams if that actually happens. Can we really do worse than the Astros? -

It's Rogers, so take with a grain of salt as usual @ChiTribRogers Phil Rogers After non-tendering Koyie Hill, #cubs have some interest in long-time #redsox Jason Varitek. His CERA last year: 3.57. ChiTribRogers Phil Rogers #Cubs are also checking out Tim Wakefield. In both cases, nothing seems imminent and interest could end if they acquire other guys.

Scott's numbers would be nice but I've have a hard time looking past his personality. I wouldn't mind Saunders at the right price. Then again, is he a fly-ball pitcher? That might not work out so well. -

Remember when Ryan Spilborghs was linked in trades to half the league and the Rockies just wouldn't trade him? Wonder if there will be a bunch of teams interested. Also, is Sonannstine not good anymore? I remember him being decent for a few years with the Rays. -
Bummer. One of my favorite Cubs the past few years. I was really hoping he'd go to the AL so this will kinda suck every time we play the Brewers.
