  1. we learned that because aaron rowand is better than kaz matsui, we shouldn't sign fukudome.
  2. Is Aaron Rowand really a sure thing in your opinion? I'd guess he's a sure thing to produce slightly better results than Kaz Matsui then yes he's a sure thing. wait we're still talking about the guy who had a .329 OBP and 93 OPS+ in 2005, and .321 OBP and 86 OPS+ in 2006, right? Those are better than Kaz Matsui's or am I mistaken? yes, and we've established matsui and fukudome are the same guy. i mean, they all look the same to me...they prolly play baseball the same.
  3. i'd probably just rather pay murton $500,000 to play rf, but since that doesn't seem to be an option, i'd prefer fukudome to green, jenkins or whatever version of jeromy burnitz hendry has his eye on.
  4. ...He did say swing a deal for Hamilton instead. I'll give him that much. And that just might be a better option than throwing all this money at a 31 year old Japanese player. and throwing a bunch of money at a 31 year old japanese player might be a better idea than throwing the farm at an oft-injured former drug addict and then signing carlos silva.
  5. i'm a sucker for a good towel joke! time well spent!
  6. thanks! classic sentence, really. well, then i guess i'm a fool for thinking that stress doesn't magically give a guy a better eye at the plate, bigger muscles, or the extra strength to throw another 5 mph. yep, i'm a fool. i'll chalk this random sentence up to you being drunk. if they perform worse in a stressless situation it's because they aren't concentrating as much as they could or not putting forth their best effort. if they then do concentrate fully or put forth their best effort in a stressful situation, they aren't raising their game above their highest level, they're simply playing at their highest level. again with the drunkenness. good post though.
  7. then that's not clutch, as he's apparently not trying his hardest in non-pressure situations.
  8. that doesn't even make sense, and your statements have nothing to do with each other or with what i said. what level you play at makes no difference. whether you're an eight year old playing little league or arod, pressure can 1) make you perform below your norm or 2) have no effect on you (and you stay at your norm). but it cannot elevate you above your norm so that you hit better, do better on tests, whatever. it defies logic.
  9. i'm not saying a guy can't perform "better" under pressure than another guy. i'm saying a guy can't improve his own individual game under pressure. obviously player X could be a 7 overall and a 7 under pressure, whereas player Z could be a 7 overall and a 5 under pressure. player X is obviuosly better under pressure than player Z, but player X's game under pressure is not better than player X's game not under pressure.
  10. exactly. plus, the cubs could have a huge hole in the OF that they may need to fill through a trade. if they trade the few valuable chips for a minor 2b upgrade, they're going to be hurting both in rf and ss.
  11. Am I thinking of a different Brian Roberts? That's awfully steep. Done without a second thought. I must be thinking of a different Brian Roberts too, because that is one lopsided trade. He's basically Matt Murton playing 2nd. That is basically a ridiculous statement. Roberts' career OPS: .760 Murton's career OPS: .820 Roberts just steals more. Ok is it just me or does anyone who is trying to make Murton sound good only talk about his OPS from last year and try to make other players seem like just average? i'd probably argue with you about this, but i have no idea what the hell you're saying.
  12. did you say RUNS?! well, now that you bring that into the equation.
  13. i don't care about losing marshall, veal, or even patterson. and i realize murton probably isn't going to play for the '08 cubs, but i'd rather see him be used as more than one of four guys in a trade to get a 2b (esp. when the cubs already have one).
  14. Am I thinking of a different Brian Roberts? That's awfully steep. Done without a second thought. murton's four years younger than roberts and has better career offensive numbers. obviously they don't play the same positiong, but including murton in a deal for roberts is too much...let alone topping him off with three other decent trading chips. if the cubs had a glaring hole at 2b, maybe i'd think differently.
  15. if fukudome falls through, it's really going to suck if hendry's traded his best chips for a slight upgrade at 2b.
  16. i wouldn't trade pie, hill or marmol in a deal for roberts. whatever upgrade he would be over derosa (if any) isn't worth it.
  17. Well, Roberts did VORP 8 runs higher than Hill last year, but as others have pointed out, we've got DeRosa and a few other options at second. The drop from Hill and the next starter is almost certainly greater than the difference between Roberts and the Cobs current options. I'm not really confident that Jim Hendry understands that, though. and it was hill's first full season in the bigs and he makes a fraction of what roberts does. and i think hill's top 10 in the NL showing in whip, k/9, k/bb, and h/9 were better than most #3 starters.
  18. instead of trading valuable young players for a 2b with a .370 obp how about we just play the 2b we already have that put up a .370 obp? if hendry trades hill for roberts, i'm done with the cubs.
  19. if you named a closer, make sure you list that closer's back up with your next turn.
  20. And then they have to sign Santana. Must be nice to not have a budget. if they can't santana, it won't necessarily be because of their unlimited budget...they actually have the prospects to trade for him. the cubs don't.
  21. Another example of Hendry bashing. When Hendry dismisses a player, he gets criticized and if he talks up a player, he gets criticized. Nobody is burning up the phone lines asking for Fuld, so what's the matter with building up the kid's ego. As for whether Hendry believes this, I don't think any of us know what he believes. Bruce Miles has pointed out that the Cubs are very tight lipped about what their plans are, but all of us "experts" know what Hendry's inner most thoughts are. how much longer does hendry continue to get the benefit of the doubt? people act like this is his first offseason or something.
