  1. Or 2B, 3B, CF, or C. I'll take my chances with a few sluggers, a few of great hitters (by my definition), and a few singles hitters over 8 Dunns, especially if they have to play the field. The 8 Dunns would score 18 runs one game and score nothing for the next two games as they strike out 20 times in each game. i never get this argument that a lineup full of dunns (or whatever strikeout prone slugger) would be inconsistent. is it based just on the fact that he strikes out a lot? because that would be stupid.
  2. huge game in the east. i can clinch a playoff spot (and keep a shot at the division alive) with a win. HBC needs to finish 2-0 (including beating me this week) and have me finish 0-2. after two weeks of winning despite not liking my matchups, i actually do feel good about my matchups this week. two starts against washington, and one each against seattle, oakland and minnesota. a lot of yankees and red sox matchups for HBC. HBC has a full week of vlad, but that means a full week of teix for me. berkman should be facing both sheets and sabathia. i could use a decent week out of a struggling uggla... the marlins miss lincecum, webb and haren. after george sherrill helped get me to within one win of clinching a playoff spot, i have heartlessly cast him aside in favor of that guy from oakland that doesn't give up runs. hope that doesn't cost me. the west is a sloppy mess that i neither care about nor fully understand. so i'll leave that analysis to someone else.
  3. yeah, they should strip germany of that gold medal in men's basketball.
  4. glad i wasn't facing tootielicious this week...i would have scored 381 points...and lost by .5!
  5. good game, raw. told you it was a bad week to be facing you. but after my three big starts (and huge week from nathan), it turns out it was a worse week to be facing me. i'll be pulling for you and all those damn mets these next two weeks.
  6. it's not like she just stumbled a little bit or hopped on the landing. she practically fell on her face. i was really looking forward to this olympics, mostly because of shawn johnson, but the gymnastics stuff has been more annoying than enjoyable. and i feel like johnson is being criticized more than she should around here, and it's kind of bothersome.
  7. the only way next week's game wasn't going to completely determine the third playoff spot was if i won this week and HBC lost...and that's what it looks like will happen. i actually have good pitching matchups next week...two vs wash, and starts against oak, minn and sea. meanwhile lots of yankees and red sox matchups for HBC.
  8. maybe, but in 4 years Liuken and Johnson will be 20 and there will be a 1/2 dozen 16 year olds who are probably better Not to mention the 4 12 year olds China will bring with passports fresh off the printer. liukin is a month shy of being 19. so johnson doing well at 20 isn't so far-fetched.
  9. there's a waiting list yes. iowa LOVES her. I am guessing we will see her again in 2012.
  10. there's a waiting list yes. iowa LOVES her. I am guessing we will see her again in 2012. hope so. i'm kinda bummed that she didn't win gold actually.
  11. there's a waiting list yes. iowa LOVES her.
  12. wait, are we talking about baseball games or one of those big puzzles you see on like the real world/road rules challenge?
  13. I'm saying in a general sense that having someone with experience on the team might help in the overall anxiety level of the team. Just like if you're in a room full of anxious people in a crisis, the results probably won't be as good as if you were in a room full of calm, cool-headed people. That's all. I'm not saying it's going to impact specific at-bats. And I never did. There's something to be said for how environment affects a person's ability to work, and that exists, in sports, business, and life. If a player has a positive calming effect on said environment, it certainly can't hurt and probably will help the overall mood and approach of his surroundings. what goony said for your crisis analogy. and if it's not going to impact specific at-bats, then what does it impact?
  14. i can't tell you guys how willing i was to trade galarraga. his three exemptions are looking pretty good right now.
  15. what are you saying then?
  16. As am I. I don't think it's an absolute by any means but depending on the guy and team I think it does have an impact from time to time. I buy into it. I agree with CCF69. I can give various examples from all aspects of life, but being surrounded by people who are calm and cool definitely influences your own ability to manage emotions. This goes for everything in life from sports, to crisis situations, to family conflicts. It's just human nature. so if it's the 9th inning of game 7th of the nlcs and soriano's up with the bases loaded (but really nervous), he's going to think about how edmonds was just totally relaxing listening to tunes before the game and he'll feel better? come on.
  17. eh, i don't think i buy into that theory at all. i'm just glad he's been so productive.
  18. i don't see how that's possible. hopefully they just do better because they will have more experience (if, in fact, they were pressing in '07).
  19. right. and those guys aren't as valuable as players who are "sluggers." i hear this "well, that's just not the type of hitter he is" arguments about theriot quite a bit. so does that mean you just don't consider his .367 SLG or whatever? hey, jason marquis just isn't the type of pitcher that strikes guys out, limits hits, or prevents runs. when you accept that he's just not the type of pitcher, you'll like him a lot better.
  20. dempster.
  21. some more terrible baserunning by theriot?
  22. He's pointed out some stupid Theriot stuff. cubinny, you aren't making any sense. Soriano didn't think he hit a HR and end up with a double. He thought he hit a HR and ended up with a double. It's not a little thing. Soriano has multiple times watched doubles and ended up having to slide into what should have been a stand-up double. This was different, he didn't even get to 2nd. It is a big deal, and it is absolutely ridiculous that people are downplaying and acting like Bob is in the wrong for complaining. how is it a big deal? He walked to first base when he should have been standing on 2nd. I'm not one to get overly critical on hustle, but this was bad. i mean, yeah, it's bad, but i wouldn't classify it as a big deal in an 8-2 game.

  24. Most of the current Braves have very little history against Marquis. Andruw Jones killed him, but he's moved on. Chipper has hit 3 home runs against him in only 6 at-bats. Overall though, there's no real idea if this Braves squad is a bad matchup for him. every matchup is a bad matchup with marquis That's not really true. Let's give Marquis credit for the good starts he's had. He's not a 65 ERA+ pitcher this year. He's a 95 ERA+ pitcher, which isn't really all that horrible for a #5. The Braves are no juggernaut this year, it's nothing like facing them when they were a playoff team. The other thing is, he's been holding pretty steady through the year. Putting up some bad starts, then some mediocre ones, with a smattering of good starts. We're in mid August now, which is usually well past the time when Jason collapses. Hasn't happened yet. Let's hope it continues. I agree with what you're saying. I take issue with the bolded part though. It's much better than "not all that horrible." For a number five starter, it's actually pretty great. it's not so great for a guy making $7 mil.
