  1. Holy Howry, I didnt realsie that the Phillies have only won 1 world series in their history. They're as pathetic as we are.
  2. That took out what little wind was in their sails.
  3. I think it depends on how they feel about Rich Hill. I agree, Pie definitely cannot be the centerpiece. They would be interested in him, but he couldn't be the #1 in the deal. A lot of people seem to think that our farm system doesnt have much to offer. Thats really not true. Much like the major league club, our system has a lot of promising prospects, we just dont have that one superstar in the system like a Gamel or a Rasmus. Vitters is the closest thing, but hes too young to know how much value he'll have in the long run. Wed have to deal with quantity more than quality. With a team like the Padres, we could easily get a deal without someone like Soto or Marmol. Wed take Pie, Marshall, and Ceda or Ascanio and go from there. Well, you just explained why people think that. Laporta got Sabathia. Maybin got Cabrera. Carlos Gonzalez got Haren. Laroche got Manny. The Cubs don't have anybody with that kind of potential. And while I love Harden and loved the move, that's why the Cubs will only be in the running to trade for players like him. By like him I mean, players with injury issues or very short-term contracts who are financial dumps by their teams. A big enough package with a few major league ready players like Marshall, Pie, and Theriot/Fontento/Cedeno mixed with a few younger guys like Vitters, Ceda/Ascanio and throw in a few minor guys like Veal/Hart/Atkins could entice a team trying to build as much as that one big guy.
  4. Either that or Furcal is a closet Phillies fan. Again, that booing is music to my ears.
  5. Ech. Peavy to the Cardinals makes me nervous. Yea I wouldnt be surprised at all to see him traded to Stl. Rasmus and Anderson, along with a couple others like Reggiemiller rules said would make sense for both teams. Which is why Uncle Jimmy needs to get in on it as soon as possible.
  6. Its been a while since Ive heard a sweeter sound than the Dodgers fans booing.
  7. Agreed. This time last year, Hill would have enticed a lot of teams, but after the train wreck that was his 2008, he'll have to prove once again that he can cut it in the big leagues if anyone will take a chance one him. Marshall, Pie, and Ceda could all be pieces of the deal, but if we were going to get them interested, wed have to use Vitters as the centerpiece.

  9. First off, you can take Marquis and DeRosa out of the deal. Rebuidling teams generally have no use for verterans in the last year of their contracts.
  10. Adrian Gonzalez Mark Prior Trevor Hoffman our old boy Jody Gerut
  11. Or something similar could at least get the Padres to the table. Thats lacking a major arm from the Cubs. If you add Rich Hill (and they value him decently), that might get you to the table. I also think they might like Theriot over Cedeno and would probably ask for Fontenot as well (since Antonelli sucks). Im thinking that at this point in time, Sean Marshall has more trade value than Hill. Id throw him in a heartbeat. As for Giles to hell with him. If he has no interest in winning, enjoy the Padres. I cant see the Dodgers or Angels having much interest in him.
  12. Or something similar could at least get the Padres to the table. It would be nice to work Giles into the deal. Id rather him than Greene. Hes a solid lefty bat, and he could play right and have Johnson and Fukudome platoon in center. I dont think it would be to hard to pry him away from the Pads. The question is, would he waive his NTC to come here? I remember him once saying, regarding the CUbs that it must be nice for every game to be a home game, talking about Cubs fans being at every park, so maybe he would like to play for us. The again, Im now not so sure how much of a fire sale the Pads plan, as they reportedly intend on re signing Trevor Hoffman.
  13. Heres my ludicris trade preposal: Cubs get Jake Peavy Khalil Greene Brian Giles Heath Bell Pads get Josh Vitters Felix Pie Wellington Castillo Ronny Cedeno Sean Marshall Juan Ascanio or Jose Ceda Donnie Veal Kevin Hart Cubs off season shopping complete.
  14. source article: http://www3.signonsandiego.com/stories/2008/oct/14/padres-peavy1420020/?padres Hmmmm. The last places we want him are Houston and St. Louis. The Dodgers couldn easily put together a deal for him. Hopefully Hendry can go all out and pull another rabbit out of his hat. Hes dont it before.
  15. Of all the offseason targets that have been discussed lately, from a realistic stand point, who could you see wearing Cubbie Blue in '09. Not who do you want, not whose the best, but the most likely to be aquired.
  16. What if we did offer up Vitters, Marshall, Ceda or Ascanio, Pie or Colvin, and Theriot or Cedeno for Peavy and Greene? Maybe throw in another pitching quasi prospect like Veal, Hart, or Atkins.Would the Padres laugh us out of town? Doesnt sound like a bad deal to me. Maybe theyd even kick us Brian Giles, who would be a hell of a throw in, but is essentially worthless to a team whose about to start a major rebuilding phase.
  17. They have Phil Hughes and Ian Kennedy, 2 guys that a lot of teams would love to get their hands on, especially one about to embark on a full rebuilding phase. Also, Im thinking that the Pads will try to package Peavy and Khalil Green like the Marlins did with Becket and Mike Lowell, in which if a team wants Peavy, they'l have to take Green as well. Greene as a throw in for Peavy? Where do I sign up? I'd be all about buying low on Greene. If they're looking to dump him after a bad year, they're essentially giving up on him and selling low. I'm all about buying low on him. I bet they'd be interested in Theriot to replace him. He's cheap, has a decent amount of time until his FA years come up, doesn't project to be too terribly expensive, and is one of those "gritty" guys that the fans love. If we can't put something worthwhile together for Peavy, and they're trying to use Peavy to dump Greene, then heck, I say offer Theriot for Greene straight up. That said, I didn't think they were that down on him that they'd be looking to dump him in a package deal like that. They strike me as a team trying to rebuild completely. I dont see them contending any time soon, so they mat just try to get as many top prospects as they can. I wouldnt be surprised if they try to move Adrian Gonzalez, whose signed through 2010 as well. Not in a package deal with Peavy, unless it was one hell of a package, but they could probably get a nice return for him as well.

  19. I find Marmol and Harden very surprising, almost depressing.
  20. Looks like the Pads are for real about moving him. Personally, I dont think we have a chance. Their are other teams with more to offer that will want him just as bad and need him a lot more. The Yankees and Mets both come to mind. The Brewers would be a great trade partner for them. They have offense to spare. The question is, would he waive his NTC to go there? Also, they probably wouldnt want Fielder with Adrian Gonzalez holding down 1B. Would they be willing to move Gamel? If The Brewers were willing to take on a substantial chunk of Peavys contract, Gamel and Parra would probably do the trick, then teh Brewers could focus on getting a decent 3 or 4 starter, and remain a legit contender. Jon Garland could be a realistic target for them.
  21. While I have nothing linkable at this moment, I have heard several similar contentions. Both in print, and from people I know. I havnt heard any specific examples, but I remember once when I was listening to the score, I dont even remember who it was, but they were saying that Santo wasnt particularly well liked in his playing days.
  22. On an interview with FOX News, Cuban said just the opposite. (on the subject of the 700 billion bailout bill) The reporter asked Cuban "whether or not this was a good time to buy a major league baseball team". Cuban smiling, answered "it's always a good time to buy a good major league team". Unfortunately, none are for sale, so he'll have to wait.
  23. Hes going to need to work on som off speed stuff before he'll have any kind of success as a starter.
  24. I really dont see him as a superstar. it would be nice if he was a Pedroia, but I dont think it will happen. I fugure at best, he could be a Darrin Erstad in his prime, and at worst, a Todd Walker.
  25. The season itself was great, which made the ending even more painful. Its like theres the girl of your dreams, whose been teasing you for years. All of the sudden, she decides she wants to be with you, and you get engaged. You plan out the wedding, the honeymoon, and living happily ever. Then a few days before the wedding, she gets gravely ill all of the sudden, and dies a few days later. Wouldnt you have been happier if she never came into your life?
