  1. Their farm system is has some very nice talent at the lower levels. While Sullivan makes it sound like Lee would be traded for major league-caliber pitching, there's something to be said for re-stocking the farm system. The Giants have some really nice pitching prospects who could be netted in a trade involving Lee, such as Tim Alderson and Kevin Pucetas. I'd have no problem with getting that kind of value out of Derrek Lee. Id take Fred Lewis+a nice pitching prospect. The question is, would the Giants, who still have some rebuilding to do be willing to do it?
  2. god, that is what I notice. Casual fans love to crow about my team going out, and I couldn't even tell you who 'their' team is. On the other hand, my hardcore Brewer/Sox fan buddy was telling me on the phone yesterday that we (Cub fans) have to realize that we're favored for the NL Central right now for 2009. My favorites are the ones who dont root for any particular team, but just hate the Cubs. Believe me, it sounds pathetic, but they are out there. When did the Cubs become almost as hated as the Yankees and Red Sox?
  3. It is forever amusing to me that people post "NTC" as if that is a conclusive end to the argument. Players with no-trade clauses have been traded before and will be traded again. To be sure, the Cubs would need Lee's approval but that's true of every other player who has had a NTC and was nevertheless traded. The fact that he has a no-trade clause is an impediment to trading him, but that doesn't mean it could not possibly happen. I don't think people are saying it means it cannot happen. But some are saying things like, "who cares what Lee thinks, if we can get Tex, byebye." Basically, it means he wont take trades to crap teams like Baltimore or Toronto.
  4. Good call: I cant see Oakland having much interest in Lee. Billy Beane is more of a buy low type of GM who wouldnt want a guy in the last year of his contract. but The Giants might. The question is, do they have anything wed want, other than the untouchable twins Cain and Lincecum. Fred Lewis still intrigues me as a leadoff hitter if Soriano would get over his not being able to hit at the heart of the lineup crap, but Id want more than just Lewis for Lee.
  5. Were not even over us yet. The wounds will take time to heal, and our rivals will enjoy every minute of it.
  6. FIXED The funny thing is had Lee not had that insane 2005, nobody would have been dissapointed with him this year, as this years stats are more along the lines of his career numbers than 2005. I know, he was in less hitter friendly parks, but I cant see that having that drastic of an effect as 2005.
  7. I've only been old enough to pay attention for about 15 (around age 6 or 7) years... so I don't know how you do it... This year was different though. Its the 100 year mark, and since May, its looked like our year, and weve let it be known, and then this happens.
  8. I live and work in the North suburbs, so pretty much all of my friends, family, and co workers who follow baseball are Cubs fans, so they share in my misery, but to those out of town, how have your friends or co workers treated this delicate situation? Have they been giving you a hard time? When you came to work on Monday, did they treat you like your mother had just died? Just curious.
  9. I don't think people are suggesting to trade Lee just to trade him, or that trading him is necessary to winning a damn playoff game. Most people would just like to see him traded because one of the best 1B in the league just happens to be a FA. Not only is he better, but he's younger too. I was commenting on Stones quote which said nothing of adding Teixeria. Two words for anyone even remotely hopeful that Teix is somehow in the Cubs plans - Scott Boras. Don't the Cubs have a good working relationship with Scott Boras? Any team with a large payroll can have a good working relationship with Boras.
  10. What about a Lee for Cano package? Cano or Derosa could be moved to 1B and the other plays 2B(This could also create some opportunities for Hoffpauir to get playing time in RF/1B), or we could sign Texiera (highly unlikely), or make a trade for a 1B Overbay, Huff? I also would wonder if there is any truth to the idea of picking up Harden's option and then trading him what about a Harden for Cano package? We already have a couple second basemen who are better than Cano. He's over hyped by the NY media just like Jeter has been forever. I want nothing to do with him. I don't know that there is anything the Yankees have I'd be interested in other than their young arms. Anybody with better MiL knowledge have suggestions? They have planty Id be interested in, but probably nothing theyd part with.
  11. Seriously...dude, get off your lazy sack and search for the thread from like 3 weeks ago discussing this EXACT SAME SUBJECT How about I didnt know a thread already existed, so why would I search for something that I didnt know existed? Seriously...dude Hey look!!! You even posted in it. Well, I guess its not all an act. viewtopic.php?f=6&t=51208&start=0&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=hardy+cain So I did. touche. I appologize, but Im going out of my mind waiting for the hot stove to start heating up in a few months.
  12. weve been paying Soriano and Fukudome 8 diget saleries for this same type of thing, and its been under our noses all along.
  13. Obviously hed have to waive it, so wed have to find somewhere hed want to go. However, he seems to really enjoy it here, so that could be tough.
  14. Maybe if we throw in Ronny Cedeno, they'll add Jay bruce.
  15. Considering the Jason Giambi era for the Yankees is at an end, I wonder what hed be worth to them.
  16. Basically what they're saying is that unless he needs major surgery, the option will be picked up. Makes sense to me, as theirs no point in dropping 7 mil on a guy who MIGHT be ready for the second half of the season.
  17. So when they start sending all the Howry jerseys and jersey shirts to the dump, are you going to grab as many as you can?

  19. The only reason I would see them consider trading Lee is if their was something better on the horizon. While he is not a number 3 hitter anymore, he could still do great as a number 6 hitter. Hes not the kind of guy that you just trade for nothing. If they really do have faith that Hoff can be a major league first baseman, and a quality LH bat, and we could get something quality in return, go for it. However, coming from the guy who guaranteed Brian Roberts was coming to the Cubs, take it with a grain of salt.
  20. Eh, I mean he has a point. The durability is an obvious concern. If he's worreid about Harden being hurt all season that's fine. If he's worried about having to take extra care of a guy and skip him every now and then to keep him healthy then he's nuts. There are a lot of pitchers like this these days, and every one of them is a huge gamble. He could pitch a full season, he could pitch on long rest, or he could not start at all. I know 7 mil is a very low risk for what he could potentially bring to the table, but I dont want another glass pitcher who you never know when his next start will come.
  21. Honestly, I love Harden, but if were going to have him in our rotation, he needs to come ready to pitch every 5th game. We cant keep him wrapped in celophane and break him out every 2 weeks. I dont want to deal with another Mark Prior. Go after Derrek Lowe, or make a play for Sabbathia.
  22. Why would Andy insist on a 34-year old player in the last year of his contract for his team that is several years away from contending? I think the offense needs to be tweaked. They were #1 this year, but #8 the year before with a very similar cast. I have a feeling they will fall back toward the middle of the pack if they stay with what they got. he might want him because a. he is cheap for his production rate b. there is a good chance he has another good year and nets him a couple of picks MacPhail might want a package centered around Theriot/Cedeno, but not DeRosa. this is true, and ultimately good for us considering the supersub ability of dero but since we have fontenot, i wouldn't hesitate to throw dero in the package if he is a needed chip I could see Baltimore wanting Fontenot back over DeRosa. DeRosa is in the last year of his contract, so whats the point in them moving one guy with 1 year left for another? Fonenot, on the other hand has a few years left under team control, and has proven that he can swing the bat.
  23. Or we could just say screw free agency and tell the Marlins they can have anything they want aside from Soto or Marmol for Hanley Ramirez. Would a package of Theriot, Mitch Atkins, Sean Marshall, Jose Ceda, Pie or Colvin and maybe a few more do the trick?
  24. http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/1248904.html On one hand, it seems like the Brewers would be giving up a lot, but on the other, it makes perfect sense. With CC and Sheets likely out of town, Cain would be a great number 1 or 2 along side Gallardo. Hardy already has his heir apparent in Alcides Escobar, and Fielder is said to be by multiple sources unhappy in Milwaukee, and Scott Boras will have him out of their price range when his free agent year comes anyway. This could be their best chance at grabbing a front line pitcher.
