    Who is pretending free agency doesn't have inefficiencies or that it should be the primary mode of acquisition? The goal is not to have the most efficient roster, it is to have the best roster you can afford. The Cubs have not had the best roster they can afford in quite some time. In the instance that the Cubs have a terrible farm system and are committed to improving that farm system(as was the case post 2011), Free agency would be the primary mode of acquisition, especially for players who would make a substantial difference in the team's win total. That doesn't make any sense.

    Or, hear me out here, the right way. What is this 5 years of ownership crap? It has been 3 years already. The assumption is they will not make the playoffs this year and every indication is they won't do much of anything to try and get good enough to make the playoffs next year. That is why he wrote, "we appear headed".

    The 2011 draft *did* prop it up though, as did the recent classes of IFAs graduating to the states. Those all had the farm system on the rise. But they were as far away as prospects can be, so saying that the farm wasn't that bad when there was no impact talent anywhere near the major leagues is misleading considering what we're talking about (being able to consistently field a contending team and reload it with young players). Isn't that statement itself misleading, when impact talent had just arrived at the major league level?

    That game was painfully dull and sloppy. Really shouldn't have been scheduled. Yeah? I saw pics of soccer in the snow and thought it looked entertaining. I'm no soccer watching expert, but since the kids I wake up at 7am and on weekends I've seen quite a bit of the futbol. Everybody was really slow, and nobody could maintain possession. It was kind of neat from a "you don't see that every day" perspective, but in reality it blew. Nothing like football in the snow. I guess they wanted altitude and cold for their advantage, but snow in Denver in March isn't exactly rare, and when it snows, it tends to snow hard there.

    I just think that Trestman is going to want to focus on offense with that first rounder. If they can get a speedy guy like Austin, they can get rid of Hester, and let Austin take that WR spot, along with KR/PR duties. I'm fine with focusing on offense, but it should be an offensive lineman. You need 5 of them just to play a game and 6-7 to last a season. WR is a 2-3 man group on the field at most times. They've already devoted a ton of cash to receiving threat at TE and have a great receiving RB. A weak link on an offensive line can negatively affect the rest of the line. A weak link at receiver can just play special teams all day.

    I certainly wouldn't mind if they come up with another stud WR in this draft, but I'd hesitate to focus on that position early in the draft. Marshall is only just now 29. He's signed for 2 more years and he's not exactly leveraged for a huge contract next time. They utilized 2 3s on him and a 2 on Jeffery already. I think they can afford to wait on WR more so than just about any position, save QB and RB.

    2007. Pittsburgh has been throwing money at prospects for much longer than that. They just suck at it.

    It certainly hurts smart small-market teams like the Rays and Pirates more than anyone else (including smart big market teams). But if you were never willing to use the draft and international free agency to your advantage beforehand, then I agree the CBA doesn't hurt any market size specifically. The Pirates are a smart small-market team? Since when?

    Absolutely. Angelo solidified things with free agents in the mid-2000s, but that does not last. Emery already went through one draft ignoring the line, if he does it again this year then next season we'll be right back into the "pretty much forced to take a lineman in the first two rounds situation and then wind up overdrafting somebody" situation that Angelo found himself.

    Well, it could happen, but you're still talking rookie guards. How much impact will they have in year 1? The tackle position may be stabilized but it's not exactly all that good.

    Screw those people then. They haven't missed the playoffs in 20 years, have 4 cups in 15 years and have a crapload of division titles (not that they mean a lot in hockey) of late. If that fan base can't deal with an off year they blow. Of all the teams in that market they should have some leeway.

    Potentially yeah but it's hard to say top half OL when they would not have anyone who was even close to the top half at their position last year for a full pro season. Not sure how Jon Scott elicited the thoughts of top half. He's not really an option at tackle, he should be nothing more than a last resort backup if somebody else is hurt during a game. I think they've stabilized the line. But the best thing they've done is allow themselves flexibility to not be forced into drafting an offensive lineman in the first. They still probably should draft one there anyway.

    Disagree with Theo about what? That he should take several years before trying to make the team any good.

    Agreed. This is such a stupid point of view. You have to be for tanking multiple seasons or you don't deserve the front office that is tanking multiple seasons. Trying to ridicule any fan who has the audacity to want his team not to suck for multi-year stretches.

    Anybody can build a great team eventually if they tank multiple seasons and suffer no repercussions for losing as often as the Cubs have lost. It's the easy way out. The timeline matters.

    Or it very easily might cost them half that. Or nothing. Or some other amount we that we have no idea about. In what dream world? In the world where a few suburbs are fighting to get the Cubs cash cow to come to their location and leave Wrigley Field? They aren't really fighting. And they aren't going to foot the bill for half a billion. They will already have to count on government assistance building new access roads to handle the overflow that a stadium would create. They aren't also going to get a ton of cash to build the stadium itself.
